I need to know the answer to the question: What folk music can I experience whilst travelling around the UK on the canals in 2010? I thought it might be useful to create a thread where Mudcatters could list either one-off events or regular Folk Club nights, singarounds or whatever. Ideally the event should be within walking distance of some suitable canal-side moorings. I'll start the ball rolling with : Fairport's Cropredy Convention which is being held from Thursday 12th - Saturday 14th August 2010. Ian |

We have 'done' the canals extensively with a LOT of folkies in Narrow boats and had some very good reception in Canalside pubs , often meeting Local Folkies on the night . |

It's every Thursday evening in the Green Man or Rising Sun pubs in the centre of the vilage, and unlike a lot of clubs it carries on right through the summer holidays. The music is a mix of traditional and contemporary acoustic, it's free to get in too. |

So watch this space. There are folk CDs of canal songs on sale in the museum and several of the volunteers/crews are folkies. Check out the website for more info. |

It's not just folk of course but I've sung folk (unaccompanied) there that went down OK. (see http://www.myspace.com/openmicsurgeryorg ) On the first Saturday of the month there's a session at the Anchor Inn, Salterforth, near Barnoldswick (Lancashire, but a lot of Tykes dispute this!) right next to bridge 151 on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. |

The section at Moira has been restored and rewatered I am glad to say but the other abandoned stretch has yet to be done. Fingers crossed though! |

Not sure how they work out which Saturday. It takes place in the Shroppie Fly, and if you walk out of the pub a bit fast you will fall straight into the Shropshire Union canal. |

It's to celebrate the centenary of the Sheffield-size keel 'Sobriety' and the retirement of the director of the museum. |

In fact the F&H is a couple of miles nearer to Junction 18 of the M6 than Middlewich is (see previous posting). Ta. |

This will run alongside the well established annual boat festival. The aim is, through music, to link the deep water trade of the tall ship days with the supply chain of the inland waterways.
