Canal Accessible Folk Events 2010

21 Nov 09 - 05:51 AM (#2770343)
Subject: Canal Accessible Folk Events 2010
From: Ian Hendrie

I'm planning next year's canal holiday(s) and decided that some additional information is needed. I need to know the answer to the question:

What folk music can I experience whilst travelling around the UK on the canals in 2010?

I thought it might be useful to create a thread where Mudcatters could list either one-off events or regular Folk Club nights, singarounds or whatever. Ideally the event should be within walking distance of some suitable canal-side moorings.

I'll start the ball rolling with :

Fairport's Cropredy Convention which is being held from Thursday 12th - Saturday 14th August 2010.

Banbury Festival is right alongside the canal . And So is Warwick I believe !
We have 'done' the canals extensively with a LOT of folkies in Narrow boats and had some very good reception in Canalside pubs , often meeting Local Folkies on the night .

By the magic that is canal life you could have a good evening in one pub, have a days cruising and a gentle stroll back to the same pub next evening!! Ah bliss.

Meanwhile though:-

Lechlade on the Thames.
Wallingford Bunk fest.

But yes if in doubt ask the Admiral.

Here's a fascinating UK website which provides a whole lot of information about the canals and other inland waterways, and a very comprehensive list of old and new songs: Click here for website

Oh, here's a link to the general "ring" website of the UK inland waterways: click here for website

I admit to having gotten lost trying to navigate the "ring." But I was more interested in the songs.

The Real Music Club in Willington, Derbyshire, is right next to the Trent & Mersey Canal. It's every Thursday evening in the Green Man or Rising Sun pubs in the centre of the vilage, and unlike a lot of clubs it carries on right through the summer holidays. The music is a mix of traditional and contemporary acoustic, it's free to get in too.

We tend to organise folky events a few months in advance at the Yorkshire Waterways Museum. So watch this space. There are folk CDs of canal songs on sale in the museum and several of the volunteers/crews are folkies. Check out the website for more info.

I met a boat owner at Banbury a couple of years ago who had just happened upon the festival. An insant convert to folk music he then turned up at Bedworth having navigated there.

My wife and I had the joy of being tourist passengers aboard the canalboats headquartered in Llangollen, both the horse-drawn and motorized ones. We'd love to spend more time aboard and may get a chance to do that next September. We were very impressed with the run across Telford's great bridge over the Dee.

There's a great "unplugged" session every Wednesday at the Stubbing Wharf Inn in Hebden Bridge, next to the Rochdale Canal (between locks 10 and 11), with moorings right outside the pub. It's not just folk of course but I've sung folk (unaccompanied) there that went down OK. (see http://www.myspace.com/openmicsurgeryorg )

On the first Saturday of the month there's a session at the Anchor Inn, Salterforth, near Barnoldswick (Lancashire, but a lot of Tykes dispute this!) right next to bridge 151 on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Please note that although the Moira Folk Festival is on the Ashby Canal, you cannot get to it by boat unless you take it out of the water at Snarestone and put it back in again at Donisthorpe. The section at Moira has been restored and rewatered I am glad to say but the other abandoned stretch has yet to be done. Fingers crossed though!

The Audlem Bagpipe and Hurdy Gurdy Festival is on a Saturady every November. Not sure how they work out which Saturday. It takes place in the Shroppie Fly, and if you walk out of the pub a bit fast you will fall straight into the Shropshire Union canal.

The Shroppie Fly at Audlem on the Shropshire Union also has a very friendly session every Monday. Anything goes, tunes or songs. Being on the canal you never know who will be there, so you get a good variety in summer.
Last Friday of the month at the Dusty Miller Wrenbury attracts the same crowd and more, some go there early for a meal (you might need to book). First Thursday of month in Nantwich is moving to the Rifleman. All start around 8.30 (or whenever)

I would also like to be cheeky and mention the following concert which has been arranged since my first posting:

The Anthony John Clarke Band (+ jiva) at North Cheshire Cruising Club, High Lane, Cheshire (on the Macclesfield Canal). Saturday February 27th. (£8) E-mail me for tickets.

Usually starting in the restaraunt when the diners are finishing, 8 for 8.30.

Excellent food if you want to dine before you play!

Contact Liz for details - please see my website www. inanyevent. org. uk for my details.

Guests always welcome.

Look forward to seeing you.

Various folk events, concerts/sessions at the Yorkshire Waterways Museum. 2 local marinas and some berths a mile up the Aire and Calder at Rawcliffe Bridge (where (Rawcliffe) there's a great session every other Wednesday). It's to celebrate the centenary of the Sheffield-size keel 'Sobriety' and the retirement of the director of the museum.

If anyone is starting to plan for next year, there is to be a maritime music festival during Easter 2011 at the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. This will run alongside the well established annual boat festival.
The aim is, through music, to link the deep water trade of the tall ship days with the supply chain of the inland waterways.
