I Hope to make it.
I was in Mystic on Friday, stopped off for lunch at the pub on the way back from Thanksgiving in New York - the pub is closing soon and under new management when it re-opens in the new year, so changes are afoot.

Perhaps some clarification is in order, given that I see no mention of "Barry Finn" in connection with this fundraising event on the linked Mystic SeaPort website. Is this official, semi-official, or just in the mind of the well-intentioned guest who initiated this thread?

I would normally ask this question privately as a PM but evidently "Guest, Guest" is not a member.

Ok, is this going to be the only Barry Finn memorial do, if so then it is likely that 2BS&S will pay a flying visit if a) people that owe me money pay up before christmas and b) Ron isn't working. We had planned to attend a memorial that had been mooted for the spring. We were flirting with the idea of going to Mystic again this year but we have decided to lend our support to the Ipswich folk weekend on the same dates. Anyone know anything?

I was going to say yes but then I realized that Jan 9 is my father's 92nd birthday. At that age, every year has to be cherished.

It is likely that Barry's wife, Justine, and his daughter, Natalie, will be at the Chantey Blast. It has been asked that they bring the story board of his incredibly touching life along with them if possible.
Hands down, there was no other person I can think of on this planet who could always bring a smile to your face just on the mention of his name.
Let's sing it up for him in grand style on Jan. 9th.

Liam's Sister-in-law-

That is excellent news to hear (that it is official), and I believe Norris Dale will be coming with me as well to this special event. And that is 1 to 5 pm on Saturday, so we really don't have to worry about staying over unless some decide to sing all night as well!

Is there anything special being done at the South Street end?

I do believe that Tom Hall has plans to organize a Memorial concert for Barry the weekend after the Mystic Sea Music Festival (to better accommodate some friends from overseas and from other parts of the country), that would be the 3rd weekend of June which coincides with the regular 3:30 to 7:30 pm shanty session at the Press Room; the concert may be latter that evening but Tom should be contacted for more details or if you have suggestions.

I'd still like to do something in the Greenman Meeting House on Sunday morning.... even if it's just to show up & sing. I might even be "cried out" by then.

Shanty for Barry Finn

Well the sails are raised and the anchor stowed
No more shall we tarry
And it's roll and go on the West Sea Road
Sing it again for Mr Finn and haul away for Barry!

May our loved ones back in port be blessed
No more shall we tarry
And our course be set for the West Nor'west
Sing it again for Mr Finn and haul away for Barry!

Well our ship is old but she's sound and dry
No more shall we tarry
So its raise the flag and watch her fly
Sing it again for Mr Finn and haul away for Barry!

We're bound for harbor on the Eastern Shore
No more shall we tarry
A thousand miles away or more
Sing it again for Mr Finn and haul away for Barry!

If never we return again
No more shall we tarry
We'll leave a song on the Western Wind
Sing it again for Mr Finn and haul away for Barry!

I'm still snowed up in Beddau, South Wales, in the big long Eurofreeze, but my thoughts go back to the night in summer last year when Llantrisant Folk Club welcomed Barry and New York duo Jerry Epstein and Ralph Boddington. Barry had a lift from Andrew and Carole McKay, whom he had met during their American trip. Barry shook the Club rigid which his wonderful, weird singing, and we cemented a friendship that was so tragically cut short by Barry's passing. I wish I could be at Mystic right now.

It was a good sing. Thank you Justine and Natalie for coming - and Neil - and Ken. I am glad that there were many who shared memories of Barry and sang for him. Honestly, though, I did feel that there was a divide in purpose and focus - promoting the festival and fund raising for the festival somehow seemed to overshadow the sense of a memorial sing. I know a number of us came specifically for the sake of Barry, who might not have come otherwise. I guess I just expected a little more memorializing from those that were benefiting, and a little less promotional activity. Then again, I am constantly labeled an idealist.

Welcome, Guest Siochain, and I like your name. (I christened a boat the same; a currach, of course.)
I do understand your point. Perhaps you were not aware that the Chanteyblast was already planned and scheduled as a benefit for the Festival before Barry's passing. This was the second annual event. The Seaport budget for the festival was slashed, as so many museum and cultural institutions and events are struggling desperately particularly the last year or two. Last year, there were a number of events organized as benefits, most notably the first chanteyblast at Mystic in January and a concert at Borderline Folk Club (thank you, Rabbi-Sol) in April. Barry, of course, drove all the way down from his home to the April event, to sing only a couple of songs but to raise his voice for a good cause. After Barry's passing, it seemed quite appropriate to dedicate this year's sing to his memory. While I enjoyed the Barry stories told, and really liked hearing a number of songs most of us first heard from Barry, it was not organized specifically as a memorial. I do know that remembering Barry may well have increased the number of people who were there, and I am very glad that there were pictures and stories, and that Justine, Natalie, and other family and close friends were there to share. When we have lost other individuals important to the world of sea music, festivals have been dedicated to them; William Doerflinger, Dave Parry, and particularly Stan Hugill come to mind. In my mind, the thoroughly enjoyable event could be viewed not only as a memorial to Barry, diluted somewhat by the festival fundraising, but instead as an excellent fundraiser with a remarkable bunch of performers, participants, and fans, that was fittingly dedicated to a man who not only enjoyed but enhanced the annual event. I am sorry if you were disappointed in expecting a memorial service only, and hope that you will come back, if you have not before, and enjoy the music and event that Barry loved so much.
Siochain to you as well.

As happens so often at Mystic, quite a festival could have been conducted with the talent in the room for the pub sing. I saw
John Roberts (Anglo), Debra Cowan (DebC), Jon Campbell, Alison Kelley, Joy Bennett, Deirdre & Sean Murtha, Bonnie Milner (The Johnson Girls), Heather Wood, Geoff Kaufman, Dave Littlefield, Don Sineti, Chris Koldeway, Rick Spencer, Ken Schatz, Jerry Bryant, Joanne and Peter Souza, Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble), Chanteens, various members of the Gloucester gang, Roll&Go, Stu Markus, Lynn Noel, Jan Christensen, Anabel GraetzSinger; actually I saw Barry Keenan and Carl Thornton who did not sing; some others sang whose names I do not know. Lots of the usual Sea Music Festival faces were there, including some who came considerable distance to share a great afternoon and support a good cause.

Well said Celtaddict The sea music festival needs all the support it can get. When the idea of the fundraiser came up last winter, it was indeed for the purpose of keeping the festival afloat which is critical in my humble opinion. We raised money and had a blast so when this years pub sing happened to be accompanied by the unfortunate passing of Barry, not to mention Liam Clancy,to dedicate the pub sing to Barry seemed like an excellent idea and I believe Barry would have agreed wholeheartedly. One way or another it truly validated the need to keep this music alive and to pass it to a new generation as well. May they treasure it as much as Barry and his peers .

Yesterday's blast was a very moving, uplifting event. Barry would have been so honored to know that Mystic dedicated this pub sing in his name. I do hope the sea music festival continues for many, many years, and that yesterday's fundraiser was successful in supporting it. It was such a privilege to be among so many talented, spirited, and kind music-lovers yesterday.

It really was a fine turnout Saturday, and I must admit I was a little worried given the lack of Mudcatters who had posted their interest in going, only a half dozen or so. But there were at least eight folks from Gloucester, ten or so from New York City, Paul from the Albany area, Michael Kennedy and Chris from upstate New York, a dozen teenagers from the NYC area who were sketching performers, Jerry Bryant, Deb Cowan, Jon Campbell & Marilyn, Peter and Marty from the Press Room shanty swaps, Heather, Bill, and Lisa from the MIT shanty sessions, and many others. I think I was the only one from Maine. In addition to Justine and Natalie, Barry's singing partner Neil Downey was also there (and led "Heavy Cruiser").

Chris started things off with "Shanty for Barry" and I followed with the song I composed "The Press Room's Extra Voice." Alex from Gloucester also sang his song in remembrance of Barry. I also sang Barry version of the "Yangtse River Shanty" which he had learned from me but had magically transformed into a working capstan shanty.

The Mystic folks were well represented by Geoff Kaufmann, David Littlefield, Don Senetti, Rick Spencer, and younger members of the shanty staff. The Chantelles were there. The John Girls were all there, and strutted out one by one to join in the singing of "Johnson Girls." Ken Schatz led "West Indies Blues" which is a particular treat for me because it is a song I've introduced and it was a joy to hear it sung so well.

There's really no way that any one person can attempt to describe this kind of event and do justice to all that was happening.

Suffice to say I am very happy I was able to attend, and that the event was so well attended and successful. And Barry's only complaint would have been that there was no public singing (that I was aware of) afterwards.

Michael Kennedy, Chris and I were all planning to stay over for the night so we went out for a quiet dinner, and then swapped C. Fox Smith songs (that we'd adapted for singing) back and forth in our motel room for a couple of hours. Mike is one fine musician and I am encouraging him to begin recording his songs.

The next morning I went over to the Museum Store and harvested another load of their discounted nautical books. And by accident ran into two of the art instructors who were escorting the teenagers from NYC. They were delighted with the chanty blast, and I took the opportunity to invite them to the chanty session next Saturday, 7:30 pm at the Seamen's Church in the South Street Seaport area and they appeared eager to follow up my suggestion. As I've mentioned in this thread I'd planned to continue on down to NYC myself and in fact I'm posting this note from the kitchen table of my brother's house in Brooklyn where I'll be in residence until next Sunday.

Thank you, Celtaddict, your response was gracious and warm. It certainly provides the background for how the day was planned.

Saturday's sing was a very good event and I do not wish to detract from the wonderful spirit that was experienced by all. I am glad that I was able to be there and appreciative of the many talents that were willing to share so freely of themselves. I am also appreciative of the many people who came to share their support both for the memory of a member of their extended music community, and for the event (the festival) which brings them together each year.

I have only attended the festival twice, but have found it to be an excellent event, quite deserving of wide-spread support. In fact, I have made a point of talking it up with friends who have not yet been, encouraging them to attend as well.

I certainly look forward to return trips to Mystic.

I note that Marty (from the Press Room sessions)has places a couple of images from the Chantey Blast on Facebook. Of course, forgot to copy the link but they were very nice! I'm still getting used to my "notebook" and I'm not even sure how to get back to that Facebook page. Maybe someone else can find it, and maybe there are other photos that others could place on Facebook or Photobucket or whatever.

Geoff Kaufmann certainly did a fine job of leading "Fire Marengo" to lead off the session, always a good song to test the glue holding the ceiling tiles!

Heather Wood stepped in a some point to help facilitate who would sing next, something I had never encountered in this hall before, but her action did help less experienced or shy people to lead songs.

The bartender deserves thanks from the thirsty members of the crowd.

And the "landlord" deserves thanks for donating the use of the hall.

I'd love to know how much money was actually raised. My guess would be somewhat over $2000.

Here, try this:
A link to Barry Finn / Mystic Chantey Sing photos by Marty Stock

To those who enjoyed my photos, thanks for your kind words.

I would be more active here on Mudcat, but I can't get past the strange nicknames. I don't remember who's who beyond a small list:

Peadar of Portsmouth is Pete Hale.
Jeri is Jeri Corlew.
Curmudgeon is Tom Hall.
Bat Goddess is Linn Schulz .
Doryman and His Mate is Peter Souza
Sinsull is Mary Sullivan.
Anglo is John Roberts.
Kendall is Kendall Morse.

I'm confused enough remembering real names, and it still feels very cliquish and exclusionary to have to just "know" what people's real names are here.
I've asked others, and they say there's no general way to look up who's "Tigerlily" or "TRUBRIT" or "stallion" or "barnacle babe" or even "janie". Anyone care to help?

I'd also like to especially thank Heather Wood for assuming the role of a kind of moderator, and I know that Barry's family also really appreciated her doing that. This was my first visit to Mystic Seaport. I gather that it's not traditional for anyone to "run" such a chantey blast the way she did, and I even heard some negative grumbling. But in my opinion, when a huge group includes a mix of old salts and newcomers, and some maybe too eager to contribute while others are hesitant and shy, it can be cacophonous to just let people try to jump in anarchically. I thought her short introductions and gatekeeping made it a smooth and lovely event.

If anyone hears of YouTube videos or other photos of this event, please let us know here.

I look forward to coming down from Portsmouth again, and I'll even sing something if I don't let myself pick up the camera for too long!

Hi Marty. I'm Janie everywhere I go, cyberspace or 3-D. However, one place I have yet to go is New England - rarely venture above the Mason-Dixon line at all, so you wouldn't know me from anywhere but Mudcat.

I've been hanging around the catbox a number of years now, and there are many folks here that I know only by (and through) their Mudcat name. Have had the opportunity over the years to at least meet, and for more than a few, to get to know them in 3-D.    Have an awful time t hinking of them by their 3-D names, though.

So not to worry. Come join us. We all be confused, at least some of the time.

It has taken an entire day to recoup from this weekend's jaunt... 800 plus miles in one long weekend :), but I'm ready to add my 2 cents worth.

It was really impressive to see how Barry had touched so many folks lives. Having met Barry through the Seaport, and specifically the Sea Music Festival, it just seemed the fitting setting for us to say thank you for being a part of our lives.

I need to get some pics I have of Barry online at photobucket... hopefully this weekend.

It was interesting to have an MC emerge at this event, but I think we need to remember that one of our goals as lovers of this music is to get the younger generation interested so it is necessary to watch our language when there are young children at the event. Some of the remarks were very uncomfortable to hear as I watched the faces of parents with their little ones. There is a time and a place for uncensored material, but it wasn't Saturday.

Tuesday evening.....well, it was truly a grand chantey blast for Mystic and a very nice way to keep our friend Barry's spirit on our minds and in our hearts. How humbling it was to see and hear the songs and faces who reflected the music and to listen to the many tributes to our good friend Barry Finn. Nice to see Justine and Natalie taking in the event along with Neil and Ken. Surely many emotions were running through the veins of all of us. Mystic did well financially and people got to express themselves in song....a good match for a good cause and a fine friend. Thirteen of the crew from Gloucester made their way to Mystic to attend this event. Barry would drive to Gloucester from Derry, NH most every Tuesday to attend our weekly sing at Cameron's and became a big part of our lives. He pushed the envelope of learning and musical talent. He lived his dream in real life and we are truly glad that he shared it with all of us......Mystic, Gloucester, Portsmouth, Portland and all points of the map that he stepped foot upon. Marty great photos posted. Geoff and Heather....nice job in keeping things rolling and for your work in putting year two chantey blast together. Not many places one could go to see the friendships that were abound in that hall for that one afternoon....simply said...what more could one ask!!!!!
Doryman and his mate.

Barry was our very first myspace friend -- a great support to us. We'll miss him dearly.

Mary-

We'll all miss Barry, but he's also the kind of person one never forgets.

My wife and I were the ones who spent a couple of days in 2007 with Barry & Neil, and with Barry & Justine, recording the tracks for their CD Fathom This. We were amazing at how well prepared Barry was to record. We expected energy and volume, and great songs, but not the level of planning in terms of harmonies, sequencing of tracks, and the notes on the songs. And they were all a joy to work with!

Charley Noble

Indeed a remarkable day at the Chantey Blast - tears mixed in with the beer - a dear, dear friend honored and remembered in a style that would have suited him perfectly. Most notably, Justine and Natalie were there - AND Justine gave a stunning rendition of a sealing song.
Barry was with us always as we roamed from song to song, person to person, and memory to memory.
At the end, when Don Sineti sang Old Maui, it was as if Stan Hugill had also entered the room - another poignant moment.
How much we are a community that truly loves all of this - see you in June!

I am so predictable- here it is the middle of February and my thoughts just keep drifting to the second weekend of June sitting in the grass or on the deck of the Morgan and listening to chantey after chantey in the sunshine and late into the night. It is never long enough nor does it get here quickly enough. It was great raising some money at the Chantey Blast, but I bet they could use a bit more. It feels good to be a Friend of the Festival and know that we help keep the tradition alive. I sound like public television but if you can, be part of this group and support the festival any way you can. Love, Twin 2( and I know Twin 1 feels the same way). I am sure you can get the details by contacting the Seaport. see you in June.
