Is Huill anywhere near Hull?

It's the same place. And it's a freak of the calendar that three of our monthly sessions will be on consecutive days, followed of course by the regular Wednesday Elderly Gentlemen's Afternoon Binge-Drinking Club.

Both, Tatterfoal. Although primarily a tunes session there's always a few songs as well.

We've not seen John for a bit, Joe. But he's always in our thoughts. And our nightmares.

John is fine.

07 Dec 09 - 12:36 PM (#2783005)
Subject: RE: Hull Sesssions and Singarounds
From: GUEST,Regular

The Black Boy session was specifically set up and publicised as a musician (instrumentalists) session so that singers and musicians would not have any false expectations and be upset if they didn't get asked for a song. That having been made clear at the outset, we do have some songs and several of the regular instrumentalists are singers also. So, the rule of thumb is, if there is a bit of a gap in the tunes then sometimes someone will sing a song. However expect that there will likely be some instrumental accompaniment (done with sensitivity we hope!) because the bottom line is that we are all there to play and participate rather than watch and be entertained by others. Hope that makes things a bit clearer for you, Guest tatterfoal. If you should join us to listen or if you find an opportunity to give us a song then I am sure you will find a warm welcome.

The Hull and District Elderly Gentlemen's Afternoon Binge-Drinking Club (Folk Music Section) normally meet in the Black Boy, High Street on Wednesdays at about 2pm-ish. But this week it'll be Thursday (28th) 'cos the redoubtable Mr Flags will be manning the barricades on Wednesday.

Subject: RE: Hull Sesssions and Singarounds
From: GUEST,ossonflags sans cookie

Arrrrrrr I am that Les; kicking collective arse in't corridors of power.

From very humble beginings with me and the windswept and intresting Mr.Fromull we have got a very nice little session going in 'ulls oldest pub..

We have been having some good turnouts in the Black boy of late.Wednesday this week been very memorable.Apart from the usual geriatric warblers, sqeezers, pluckers and strummers we were well represented by comrades from the antipodian and whitby buskers chapter and junior affilliates of above.

Not often we enjoy such an clectic mix of Box, irish pipes, tabla, sitar, guitars and selected whistles, fiddles, bodhrans and voices on a winters afternoon.

So if you enjoy a very laid back session and you arent doing owt on thursday arternoon get down to the Black boy this week.200pm ish start to whenever.

Back to Wednesday week after.

Is there a minimum age limit to qualify for membership of such an august society? Or is it down to mere attitude? ("If it sounds/looks/talks/smells/chunters like a grumpy old git, then it probably is one").

I may need to get the shaver out and expand the bald patch, dust on some talcum powder to add some extra grey to the hair....etc

At a mere lad of 52, I'd probably need some help to pass for 'elderly', unless it's down to attitude - I can do 'grumpy old git' like an expert.

I was waffling on to my kids once, referring to their maternal grandparents as 'old codgers' (in the nicest possible way), when elder daughter asks: "Daddy, are you an old codger"?

The only credible response seemed to be "Not yet, but I'm working on it".

Señor O'Barmy: It's the pub at the Pier with the beautiful view of North Lincolnshire. Accessible from the Deep via the footbridge over the Hull. Have you lost your sense of direction since leaving Hull's Spanish Quarter? Are we to be favoured with a visit?

Met some friends of yours last weekend. Didn't know you had friends.

Hi Guest, Re: listings: I used Folktalk's listing when I was looking for sessions last summer / autumn - that's regularly updated. One of the sessions I went to in Barton had moved, but that's been updated now, the person running it was very helpful when I emailed her. Several others I went to / heard about were up to date.   Phone calls to the pubs worked, Les from Hull was extremely helpful. This thread is brilliant, if I'd seen it when I first moved there to Cottingham I wouldn't have needed anything else.

Good luck.

Mick, Les et al,
What a lovely little session at the Minerva, in that lovely room overlooking the river. A great combination of songs and tunes, right up my street. Nice to see Joe Richardson and his mates. In fact a healthy combination of youngsters and old farts like meself. Nice to see two of those electronic melodeons on display. I loved the combination of the 3 fiddles and the flute, particularly the harmonies on those lovely Swedish tunes. Please give us a reminder when the next Tuesday do is imminent.

Yes twas good, I enjoyed it. Will bring fiddle and / or banjo next time. However both need some minor adjustments..I need someone in Hull who can do repairs to both instruments. My banjo maker lives in Hornsea and my violin man is in Beverley music shop but doesn't work Saturdays. Which is difficult because I'm at work in Hull mon to fri so can't get to the shop when he's there. Unfortunately having no transport and not a lot of money means someone in Hull would be much easier all round for me!

I want a 'railroad spike' capo fitting to my (5 string) banjo and my violin cured of its very annoying buzz that it's recently acquired!

..I'd like a new fiddle really but that's another story! Beverley music shop has some nice ones, I don't know of anywhere else that specialises in 'em around these parts. Anyway, any help is appreciated with this..

"I want a 'railroad spike' capo fitting to my (5 string) banjo"

this is a very simple job well within the capabilities of any average
" D I Y er" you can get the spikes from any railway model shop and send a PM to BanjoRay and I'm sure he,ll be only to happy to tell how to fit it

Jane, our friend in Hornsea goes to the Beverley Music Shop most Wednesdays. I'm sure if You spoke to him, it would be possible for you to drop the banjo there for him on a Saturday and he could collect it when he visits. If the job is straightforward, he may be able to do it on site and leave it for you to collect the following weekend.

Just a thought? Might be worth a phone call to see.

Have messaged BanjoRay, thanks Banjo-Flower. Sorry Johnjo but that would involve trips to Beverley, if I can find someone in Hull to do it it would be so much easier! thanks anyway.

Anyone know a fiddle repairer in Hull then?

Jane

Yes Guest it is tomorrow Sunday at The Minerva hull pier 5.00pm start until 7.00pm ish. All styles welcome, in fact everyone is welcome.

The same goes for the Wednesday session at the Black Boy High street Hull sess.

The Hull(City of Culture) and District Elderly Gentlemens Binge Drinking Club(Folk Section) has met there for the last few years and it is a great eclectic, very laid back sess.

Such luminaries as Rory Mcloud, Paul and Liz Davenport,Phil Woods, The Hillbilly Troupe,Jody Mackena, Paul King and countless others have dropped in from time time.

Along with the long standing regulars, such worthies as the very interesting and windswept Mr.Fromull, Brian Nelson, Sue Jordan and let us not forget the long distance folkie Kev.from Wakefield who catches six buses to attend!!! oh and me Mick McGarry so come along guest and help us keep music live!!
