The Music of Arboriculture

Iasn Carr has a record out called Timber(not too sure if that is the record title or the name of the band). It occurs to me that I have a record featuring Chris Woods, and another by Oak. My daughter, on the other hand, is a big fan of Ash. Do any other recordings/performers/songs suggest themselves, dear reader?

The late Royston Wood & Heather Wood — both members of the Young Tradition with Peter Bellamy. People would. understandably, call them Royston & Heather Wood; but this erroneously suggested a non-existent relationship, either husband/wife or brother/sister: they once made a record together called 'No Relation'.

Folk Review magazine was founded & edited by Fred Woods, also director of Argo records, novelist & spy-thriller-writer, & an authority on Winston Churchill on whose life & work he did a PhD [despite having no '1st degree'] just before he died of cancer in the 1990s. He was a close friend of ours.

And there was, of course, Woody Guthrie...

Furthermore, by train of thought, Peter Bellamy's brother-in-law, who sang the bass harmonies on some of his records, was Chris Birch, who is leader of a well-known group in Luxembourg.

A quick look through 'folk' in my iTunes library brings up these people/groups (excluding others mentioned above):

Bob Forrester on VotP V5
The Douglas Firs - track Woman of Wood, album Fatea autumn09
Harry Cox VotP 12 (tenuous = apple tree)
Ian Woods/Charley Yarwood on Seasons,Ceremonies & Riturals
The Lone Tree Orchestra on They All Died at Passchendale
Megan Henwood & Joe Henwood
The Sawdust Band on The Guv'nor Ashley Hutchings Volume 2
Trees

Lots of tracks & albums but June Tabor's At The Wood's Heart sprang immediately to mind.

Yes, thanks for reminder — Trees were one of the early folk-rock groups: quite good singer I recall called Celia Humphris; but that habit so prevalent at time of irrelevant & interminable instrumental breaks in the middle of every track so that by time they started singing again you had forgotten what the bloody song was about.

Well MtheGM

Trees is a group that constantly gets requests for air time on Genevieve Tudor's Sunday Folk (on tonight 7-9pm BBC Radio Shropshire, Stoke & Hereford & Worcestershire plus online if the gremlins don't cause a blip again!)

Ah, thanks — is that Trees the same group I posted about or another of the same name? My strictures, btw, were just the way I saw/heard it at the time (& reviewed the group to that FK, in I think it was, the Times Ed Sup that I waas folk critic for at the time): not everybody has to agree [he conceded graciously!].

All singing requires timbre. Good things come in trees.
