As it's going to be a bit busy here over the next few days (Mrs Bugsy and I are spending Christmas day with our son and then Cooking a Christmas Dinner,Turkey, Ham, Pork, etc, for 30 friends on Boxing day)I thought I'd get in a little early and wish all my friends on Mudcat a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

All the best,

Bugsy

A very happy, Xmas (and even Xnas) to all on Mudcat, from deepest Sussex in the UK.

Those of you who live within slurping distance of Harveys Brewery in Lewes, Sussex, and all its outlets, will no doubt be interested to know that this lunchtime, I carried out from the Cricketers pub at Berwick a 4-pint flagon of Harveys Christmas Ale (8.1% ABV) in readiness for a pre-Christmas dinner drink tomorrow morning.

Stollage is in the cupboard under the stairs - just cool enough to give it a good drinking temperature for tomorrow morning.

Cheers!

Love and Best wishes to everyone.

As I sat under a sycamore tree,
A sycamore tree, a sycamore tree,
I looked me out upon the sea,
Christmas Day in the morning.

I saw three ships a-sailing there,
A-sailing there, a-sailing there,
The Virgin Mary and Christ they bare,
Christmas Day in the morning.

And he did whistle and she did sing,
And he did whistle and she did sing,
And all the bells on earth did ring,
Christmas Day in the morning.

And now we hope to taste your cheer,
To taste your cheer, to taste your cheer,
And wish you all a happy New Year,
Christmas Day in the morning.

As gospellers have said,
Beneath signalling skies,
On land dusty to tread,
A trough in a stable
Was the strawy first-bed
Of a divine baby -
The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
There then, and here now;
The yuletide of goodwill -
There then, and here now.

In respect of this chance,
Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
Attending Christ's churches
And trying to enhance,
With singing and ritual,
Our God-loving stance.

Holiday greetings:

I am a secular non-observant Jew, but strange as it may seem, Christmas is one of my favorite celebrations. Go beyond the supernatural aspects, the mythology, and the historical inaccuracies, and the Christmas story, which purposefully coincides with the Northern Winter Solstice, tells us that the birth of every child is a miracle and a new beginning, heralding the potential dawn of a new era, and that every newborn child is a messenger of peace and redemption. And, if we choose to look at it that way, that every child is the Son or Daughter of God. While the Christmas story singles out one child for adoration, the underlying message is that every child -- even a child born to poor and struggling working class parents, even a child belonging to a despised and oppressed people whose ancestral lands have been militarily occupied by a foreign power, even a child born in a hovel in Palestine -- should be considered a King of Kings, more worthy of our honor and devotion than any of the materially rich and powerful kings, presidents, and corporate and military leaders of our world.

Amen. The sermon is over. Have a merry Christmas, a happy Hanukkah, a blesséd Solstice, a good Kwanzaa, and above all a sweet and peaceful New Year.

--- Steve Suffet

Merry Christmas to you all. I am enjoying my home made Mulled Wine. If you fancy making it, here is the recipe I use.

Mulled Wine

2 bottles red wine
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
4 sticks cinnamon
5 whole cloves
1 orange
1 lemon

Zest the fruit, avoiding the white pith. Put this, the sugar, cinnamon and cloves into the water. Bring this to a slow boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Now add the wine. Add in the actual orange and lemon fruit part, sliced up. Warm this on low heat for 40 minutes (do NOT boil). Strain out the wine and serve!

Very lovely "sermon," Suffet, and I echo your sentiment of wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season and new year.

Here's my musical Christmas card.   (The pic is pretty lousy and the audio quality could be much better but you can "feel" the song and hear the lyrics - which is the point.)   Merry Christmas today from sunny-but-not-hot San Diego (where the natives wouldn't mind a little more rain at all!).

Suffet, that was beautifully -- and well -- said. Thank you.

Laurel, there's a raven on top of my Christmas tree this very moment (a very realistic life-sized raven hand puppet, to be precise) and dangling from his beak is a sun ornament. It's quite grand, and pretty imposing, too!

To everyone, may peace come down like a soft winter snowfall to surround you in drifts of calm and contentment, until the earth blossoms again. Merry Christmas.

Ever thought about where the title "Boxing day" comes from ?
I looked it up and found this.

"The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon tradition of giving seasonal gifts in the form of a "Christmas box" to less wealthy people and slaves. In the United Kingdom this was later extended to various workpeople such as labourers, servants, tradespeople and postal workers.

Boxing Day is traditionally celebrated on 26 December, St. Stephen's Day, the day after Christmas Day. Unlike St. Stephen's Day, Boxing Day is a secular holiday and is not always on 26 December: the public holiday is generally moved to the following Monday if 26 December is a Saturday. If 25 December is a Saturday then both the Monday and Tuesday may be public holidays. However the date of observance of Boxing Day varies between countries".

Boxing day almost got me killed in Newfoundland. I had never heard of it, thought day after Christmas..great day to go shopping..went shopping..no stores no nothing open, and a huge storm blew in..one of the killer types. No buses, no taxis, no places open. Somehow I made it home several miles...scary. But happy boxing day everyone. mg

The festivities started a 2p and finished 02.30am. Then started again at 7am and finally finished at 12.30pm. Then we had to go to our niece's birthday party at 7.30pm.

Guess what? we're buggered!!!
