Open Mike - UK singer Derek Gifford has done a similar thing - he was at Chippenham Festival in 2008 with a whole concert of birdwatching songs - songs that mention birds in them. 'The snow it melts the soonest' Eliza Carthy - mentions woodcock in one of the verses. There are many tunes and songs about the hunting of the wren, which is right for this time of year (just... Boxing Day and Twelfth Night in certain years)- the Chieftains 'The Bells of Dublin' CD and the Boys of the Lough 'MidWinter Nights Dream' (aka 'Da Day Dawns') has some great ones. 'She moved through the fair' mentions swans.... Then there's Jake Thackery's 'Bantam Cock' which may get you thrown off air... (Marc Bolan & T-Rex's 'Ride a white swan'?) At a stretch you could put in 'I'll fly away' from 'Brother, where art thou'? LTS |

Artisan's recording of 'What's the use of wings' is good, 'Galway Shawl' mentions linnets, 'Twa Corbies' by Steeleye Span is another good one.... Coope, Boyes and Simpson's recordings of 'She's like a swallow', 'Wild Goose Shanty' and 'Pleasant and delightful' are worth a spin, what with those larks being melodious all over the place... 'Hear the nightingale sing' is the chorus to a song I can't quite place at the moment... where the soldier sits down beside her and gets out a one string fiddle... Jim Causleys' 'The carnal and the crane' - although it could have your listeners wondering if their radios have broken - it's very low and slow. Steeleye and Vaughan-Williams have both recorded/composed music about larks in the morning/clear air/ascending... Steeleye went one further with 'Fly up my cock'.... Rod Shearman's 'Song of the Sea' mentions gulls and is a beautiful piece... That should keep you going for a while! LTS LTS |

Bird on a Wire by Leonard Cohen and recorded by him and others. Quite a few songs about bluebirds including "There's a Bluebird Singing" a relatively old song in old time, country, and bluegrass tradition; "Bluebird Blues", and "I Heard the Bluebird Sing". Good old fiddle tune called "Red Bird". |

Much parodied, of course, as 'The moon shines bright on Mrs Porter {whose daughter for some reason washed her feet in soda [or dirty] water}', a scurrilous WW1 soldiers' version quoted by Eliot in 'The Waste Land', & also by Ernest Raymond in his once-popular WW1 novel 'Tell England'; and also as 'The moon shines bright on Charlie Chaplin, his boots are cracking for want of blacking' &c - also from WW1 period, as it sends Charlie in the last line to "The Dardanelles", which crops up IIRC in Joan Littlewood's "O What a Lovely War". But I agree it is originally about a girl, {"There once was an Indian maid"}, who loses her lover in battle; and not a [feathered] bird. |

Beeson writes : "Rosie's Eagle" is based on a true story. The story itself is fiction, but when I was a kid I fed cattle for a little lady named Rosie Baysinger. In her house was a female Golden Eagle that was mounted in the 1930s. She told me how a pair of Goldens nested on her place, and that in 1937 the female was accidentally killed in a coyote trap. Eagles mate for life, and for 40 some years, the male returned every year, looking for his mate. I have seen him, back in the 60s, when my Dad and I would work for Rosie, while she visited her children in California. It always stuck in my mind, that love between those two eagles, was the way it should be between two people. True and Everlasting. That's how "Rosie's Eagle" got written. Beeson also told us that he has had the great privilege to perform "Rosie's Eagle" for Rosie Baysinger's children, in the presence of the mounted eagle. |
