All the songs and tunes in the play are available in the "Lark Rise" CD (Albion Band).

:-)

The Albion Band CD (Talking Elephant TECD097) predates the BBC show by thirty odd years. Still well worth a listen. You can relisten to last night's BBC tv show on Iplayer.

Incidentally, the fiddle player that Alf got the song from (for the price of his lunch) is in real life, Mike Lease from south Wales. Ex Hwntws and Hin Deg and currently Murphys' Law and also working with Catrin O'Neill.

Can't help you with the song though. Sorry.

Do we think it is a "real" song. It could well have been written to suit the story line. It is after all a TV drama first and foremost. I reckon it's the most watchable bit of Telly for ages. Luckily I never read the book so I'm not spoilt by accuracy.

I've not done any research but I got the feeling it was a portmanteau creation, picking 'n' mixing from a few songs to create a version which did fit the drama. Which I haven't got a problem with at all, but the series has now strayed so far from the source text that the authenticity of the music is the least of the issues if you want to start nit-picking.

I just wish the actor who plays Alf would learn to mime moving the melodeon in something like a realistic manner - very distracting!

I have just watched my first episode. Interesting. I sort of imaghined it might bear some relation to a rather good book I read called "Larkrise to Candleford". Not so. The book was written by someone with a detailed knowledge of country life, and made an interesting point about the conspicuous lack of folk music in the community.
The programme, on the other hand, was apparently made by someone who looked as if they might have watched one other programme about The Old Days, as background research. It was also full of people making up a sort of school-teacherish fakesong, and playing meledeons guitars and banjoes as if in a folk club.
The guy's job toiling in the fields didn't look too bad. A days work seemed to be pulling a scarecrow out of the ground, and then vaguely thinking where to put it next next, and then having a bit of a dance.
How charmingly bucolic.
