Lyr/Chords ADD: Child of Mine (Bill Staines)

Subject: Child of Mine
From: Lew Abramson

I am looking for the words and chords of a song sung by Bill Staines.

It is probably called "Child of Mine"

It has a sweet and melodic tune and lyric.

Please email me with the lyrics if possible.

Wouldn't be the Christ Child Lullaby per chance? Very pretty tune - good for a cappella. Check the Digital Trad data base.

Oops - no, I mean Coventry Carol - which is also on the database, but the words are a little different from the version I know. It includes the phrase "Oh little child of mine,By By Lully lu Lay". sorry; don't have any chords.

Child of Mine, you are the wildest wind
And the dearest dream I will ever know.
Love's lasting light shines out from deep within
This father's heart as I watch you grow.

Child of Mine, you are the break of dawn
And the brightest star I will ever know.
Love's lasting light comes shining on and on
From this mother's heart as I watch you grow.

There is a road, and that road is all your own,
But we are here, you need not walk alone.
To face, not fear each coming new unknown
Is the way to lift your wings.

Child of Mine, you are the sweetest song
And the greatest gift I will ever know.

Child of Mine, where spirits fly above
There is but one that belongs to you.
So let it grow and it will thrive on love
For it is love that sees us through.

You have the hands that will open up the doors
You have the hopes that this world is waiting for,
You are my own, but you are so much more,
You are tomorrow on the wing,
Child of Mine.
(repeat last verse)

It's on Bill's Going to the West album on the Red House label. It's a good album - but all of his albums are good.

Here's the setup and chords from Bill's songbook. I'm sure Uncle Joe will patch this up (thanks, Joe), if I missed a tag somewhere. Must be printed non-proportional, though.

The great thing about folk people is that we as a group, grumpy though some of may be, are a giving and shring subculture that I for one hope never disappears.

Thanks to all who responded to my request.

If any of you are in the North Jersey area come visit me at any of the Hurdy Gurdy Coffee house concerts. I'm large economy size guy with mustache and specs.

Oh, yummy yummy. I heard this song today on a long-abandoned CD I unearthed and I so much wanted the words and chords, now that I can semi-play the chords. So I enter the Land o' Mudcat and VIOLA! here it is.

I love you guys ...

Looks like a couple of possibilities, Joe.   I think it's Melissa Javors.

Did I read somewhere that this song was commissioned by a railroad?
