BS: Fav Abbrv's

Abbrv's abound. I got--and still use-- a number of them when I used to be a telephone-answering-service operator. That era and that part of strokebrain must be coming back online, because I see them spontaneously creeping into my posts and emails. Along with a number of other abbrv's I used as a proofreader. I keep having to go back and write them out in the posts, but lately I just don't have as much time to do that.

I also see a lot of abbrv's in "today's" emails, which I have learned come from txt-msg-savvy yoot posting from their SmartyPants phones. :~) I thought they just couldn't spell, or properly use Caps/lc. They just ain't at a puder, duh!

So I wondered, what abbrv's do YOU often use, and where didja get 'em?

You may or may not like this.

I was reliably informed that when the UK Polytechnics were promoted to new Universities in 1992 (thus telling us what we already knew - that we were 2nd best !_) the former Newcastle Poly intended calling itself the Collegiate University of Newcastle on Tyne.

In the UK, many cathedral organists are Fellows of the Royal College of Organists.

Amongst the cinema organ fraternity, the common meaning of FRCO is -

F***ing Rotten Cinema Organist

artbrooks, I too I try to KISS, but it I suspect it often sounds like GIGO.... and what is GIGO? Pls BRB to tell me! :~)

[various wordpictures of actions] are also finding their way into my 'graphs of late. I must be dancing on the inside.

Welcome to the game, BG. BTW I recall once you used BBW, and it totally confused me, as it has multiple "standard" meanings. I think you do use that one a lot.

The SF Bay Area Rapid Transit has been such a smashing success that other California regions like the Fairfield and Fresno areas are considering getting their own.
Trouble is, their acronyms wouldn't sound as cool as "BART."

People who think taxes stink would probably consider my state's revenue department aptly named:
Oregon Department Of Revenue

(Of course, that gets acronym-ized just as the IRS does.)

Then there's knicknames. Abbrvs for whole perigraphs yew poke up outta the fog: Like "somebuddy" and "anybuddy" and "nobiddy."

DILLIGAF is one of my faves -

I also like a lovely acronym coined by the IT department. When attending a poorly computer on call-out, they would sometimes phone back to the office to say that the job had been cleared. In answer to the question "What was wrong with it?" they'd sometimes say "Not much...It was a PICNIC" = Problem in Chair Not In Computer....

Do you remember Bliar banging on about Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD's) and The War Against Terrorism, endlessly? The latter was quickly changed to The War On Terrorism when someone in the New's Quiz pointed out the initial abbreviation. There's probably a whole Whitehall department appointed to listen to that programme.

I liked one Pip came up with the other day when talking medical things with a nurse. Not really sure what they mean but a PID could be pelvic inflammatory disease or prolapse intervertabral disc. Guess abbrevs can be confusing.

She also tells me of a ward round when someone to the consultant said what he needs is an RTS (which to me in a former lift, I might have thought Return To Supplier). The consultant was unsure what an RTS was but was told it is a raised toilet seat.

Leadfingers, a little correction:

QED or q.e.d. is "quod erat demonstrandum", which translates as "Which was to be shown" (or proved or demonstrated).
