Tech: Can Opera be used with Snow Leopard?

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard on our Mac, and when I tried to use Opera, the icon just kept jumping up and down in the dock but didn't open. I uninstalled it, and then tried to reinstall it, but when I try to open the download, the computer doesn't know how to open it. Anyone else had this problem?

I'm also having difficulty when I try to install Lotus Symphony. It says it's installed successfully, but then when I try to open it, it says it's damaged or parts are missing. Anyone had a problem like that one?

Apparently Opera and Symphony are competitive...

Yeah, the names they're giving this stuff do seem kind of silly, but what do I know? (Not much, actually... )

I'm running Opera successfully with Snow Leopard and using it for tis post. What version of Opera do you have? It might be worth checking you have the latest version and that it is the Mac version!

Best wishes,

Peter

I have the same problem, under LEopard, with the Digital Tradition download. Broken parts of something when it unpacks the DL. Sigh. It was working so well, too.

The first suspect is the need to run a permissions repair. You should have a utility called Cocktail, if you don't, which does a handy job of it. Disk Doctor will as well, and there are some command-line startup options you can use I forget.

Second option would be to scrutinize the Opera web site and any support fora or threads on the subject. Often a field fix is found by someone who kindly posts it for others to find.

I tried reinstalling Opera again and this time it worked. Thanks for the input on that.

Nobody has any experience with Lotus Symphony? Does anyone know of any free spreadsheet software that works with Snow Leopard and that can be read by Excel and Microsoft Works spreadsheet software?

Dunno about orks reading much outside itself but Excel handles the open-source Office products just find. Open Office is pretty well-established: http://suite-3.org/.

A comparison of open-source officeware can be found in this article.

Thanks, Amos. I'd forgotten about Open Office.

Opera can't be used with Snow Leopards because they refuse to wear those silly costumes. Besides, their vocal range just isn't equal to the task.
