Valentines Day Folk Show - LIVE NOW

10 Feb 10 - 10:12 AM (#2834946)
Subject: Valentines Day Folk Show
From: Max

Hey Gang,

I'm hosting The Folk Show on WPSU FM (http://wpsu.org/folk) on Sunday from 12-2pm EST, which is Valentines Day. I'm working on a set list that I thought you might be able to help with. Without explaining what I'm looking for, I'll just show you what I have so far:

Ain't It A Shame, Pete Seeger
Delia's Gone, Johnny Cash
A to Z, Blind Willie McTell
Frankie & Albert, Tah Mahal
Crow Jane, Skip James
Knoxville Girl, Wilburn Brothers
Pretty Polly, The Stanley Brothers
The Cruel Youth, Gerri Gribi
Delia,Bob Dylan

Any suggestions?

Any version of 'Barbara Allen', but preferably one where she laughs as his coffin goes by and then ends up buying the farm herself.

Too bad there (AFAIK) is no recorded version of Richard Thompson's 'They're Dragging the River for You'.

OK, I've decided to create a nice balance. So I need really touching, even over the top, love songs too. I want to make women swoon, then get really angry, then swoon, then.... Any suggestions?

How macabre. I once wrote a Valentine's Day song once for a friend going through major emotional issues - the song is pretty brutal, and mercifully unrecorded.

Let's see, there must be something from Townes Van Zandt. How about "Our Mother the Mountain?"

As far as making them swoon, how about Utah Phillips's "Nevada Jane" - a wonderful love story with a social conscience.

For just plain fun, you can use Martin Carthy's recording of "King Knapperty" - the love between the king and queen of slobs.

Interestingly enough, if I remember correctly, "When Two Hearts Combine" was written about the Northern Ireland peace process. But I agree, it works beautifully as a love song. Love the Tom Lehrer suggestion.

I read somewhere years ago how Pete Seeger said something about all of his songs being love songs....just different facets of love.

Looks like I missed my suggestion.

It's nice that you have some positive songs in with the 'love sucks' ones. (And Dylan could pick, then!)

"When I Cannot Sleep At Night" by Bruce Murdoch, 'cos it brings tears, Max, for the right reasons..the lassies will love it...

"You Made My Heart Beat Fast" also by Bruce, for the fellas, 'cos it's sexy and sensual and they'll identify with it. That man can't think straight when she walks past him, ignitiing all sorts of memories...and possibly wishes too.
