What do I need to do to save audio from MySpace pages or YouTube videos to my hard drive?

AudioHiJack, available free for recordings up to ten minutes long (would cover most YouTube or MySpace offerings) allows recording of any streaming audio (ie, if you can hear it via your computer, you can record it). For longer clips (podcasts, etc) you can upgrade for a USD32 charge.

You can also record with the free program Audacity, just select "what you hear" as the source from the drop down menu.

this one is free, records any sound coming through the speakers and apperently will let you save the film clips too. though i haven't tried it.
just turn down the volume of what you are recording slightly to stop it distrorting on playback.

i have audacity but have found a better one, but you have to pay for it. but this one is magic, one touch record and stop, the windows stays on top of everything else and you only have to put the name of the song in once.. MARVELLOUS!

at the top of the page when the file starts playing...

The other answer is that ....once you hear/see those clips, you already DO have them on your hard drive. They do not make it easy to find them, but they are there...at least until you close your browser.


If you use Firefox, you can type about:cache into the address box, then click on 'disk cache' and get a listing. Even better....get a Firefox add-on called cacheviewer and have a searchable list of the items you have viewed. There you can copy or move the item and rename it if you wish.

Another way is to use this cache viewer from NirSoft or a specific video cach viewer
(they also provide an I.E. cache viewer and an Opera cache viewer'

I have used these things...they do work. A few tries, and you'll have the routine down. It's as easy as figuring out how to navigate FaceBook!


I now keep a file manager with tabs, like browser tabs, marking the various cache locations in different browsers, and simply go there, look at the newest entries, and move & rename them....adding the proper extension...(in the case of YouTube, .flv).

It's fun realizing you are doing something they didn't want you to know about.

Yes...you CAN experiment with Audacity and various download programs, and I have made some of those work also....but just taking what is there and putting it where YOU want is not difficult. (Remember...many of these files, being in the cache, are designed to be TEMP files which are deleted when you close the browser, or after a certain size limit is reached.)

just as a matter of interest, here is something I posted in a newsgroup over 2 years ago:

"I am not sure everyone realizes that as soon as you play a YouTube
video (or most other 'Tube' clones, it IS already downloaded...you
just need to know where to look for it.
   In my case, because I use Opera 9, it is in a subdirectory under
'profile' -> 'cache4' with a coded name like OprOgdiw.flv
   I simply go to my file manager (I use Free Commander). look at the
date/time to be sure it's what I just watched, and move it to the
directory I want and rename it...either to the YouTube name, or
whatever I wish.
*IF* you use Firefox or some other browser, the directory will
probably be under 'documents & settings' -> 'owner'-> 'local
settings'-> 'application data'.->'Firefox'->'cache'.......something
like that..(I know, they don't make it easy)...but it is always a good
thing to know where stuff and the various 'temp' files are stored on
your machine."

michaelr, in the toolbar at the top, right beside the slider volume control with the mic icon there is a rectangular white box that is defaulted to line in. Clicking the downward pointing triangle at it's right gives you a list of the record source options, one of which is "What U Hear"

The record source options in Audacity apparently depend on your sound card. For example the ones I have are: CD player, wave out mix, mono out, phone, microphone.

I find VDownloader useful for downloading You Tube and some other videos. There are some You Tube files that it won't d/l though. Those can usually be d/ld with Real Player. VDownloader is also useful for changing formats of previously download files, e.g. extract mp3 from mpeg. VDownloader

cheers open mike, i only use it to capture a single song at a time. for that it works great but like i said i haven't tried the videos. however the audio goes over 5 mins, the longest song i have done so far is 6 mins. not sure how much longer it would go. however, as it is free to download, it would be worth playing about with it.

Now all I've got to do is find out where on my Mac Safari hides its cache files, if what I've read on this thread is to hold true. There's certainly no mention of "cache" except how to empty it.

good question sue.    sort of and not really. there are plenty of sites that don't let you access the whole song, this is because of copyright and distribution rights.
to me, if i could afford the albums i might buy them. as i cannot, it is surely better to do it this way, than miss out. do you not think?   i would like an artists answer to this, though it won't stop me, as most of the artists we like, i cannot find more than one or two songs, from the smaller bands anyway.

melissa, like i said i haven't tried to save the videos from youtube, but i would have thought that whatever you see in the video box, would be what was saved to your PC.

alot of the albums i have recorded, we had on tape anyway, so for me it isn't like stealing, just upgrading.
is it anymore stealing than recording an album for a friend? or like we used to record songs from the radio, in the old days? although technically illeagal, tape recorders were made. it is any more moral, to post videos of bands on youtube without their knowledge?

ok, now my brain hurts, have to take the dogs for a walk, so that might help......maybe.

a quick ps,

i would much rather buy the albums, i have done. it has taken me hours and hours to do the songs i have already done. however we do not have that sort of cash, to just buy 30 or so albums. i wish we didm that way, the car woudn't be worn out, we would have a decent caravan, instead of a knackered one.
to me, going to see bands live is much more important, than a cd.

This is the (US) legal situation as I (a layman, not a copyright lawyer) understand it:

Most of the content on YouTube is pirated, despite their explicit policies against such practices--I'm sure that most posters have not sought the necessary permissions and licenses to use the performances they've recorded, the music tracks or images they include or the works they perform. Capturing video or audio from YouTube is also (in most cases) pirating.

However, a number of clips include public domain material, such as audio recordings now in the public domain or videos made by the government. Montages, even of public domain photos, might constitute copyrighted original creative works by the compositors, much like performers' arrangements of folk songs. I'm not sure whether simply packaging pd stuff as a clip constitutes "original work"--that seems pretty bogus.

"Fair use" policies might apply if you're capturing materials for personal study. Capturing for personal enjoyment would not qualify, so you might have a hard time in court proving "fair use".

The fact that you own a recording in one medium doesn't legally give you the right to pirate another copy from a separate source (like YouTube). But I think the law allows you to make a copy, for personal use only, from a recording you legally acquired. Once you start giving copies to friends, you've crossed the legal line.

While the capture advice in this thread will mostly be used to pirate or re-pirate material, it also applies to perfectly legal usage. Tape recorders were ostensibly sold so people could make recordings of themselves or of events they had full rights to record (and indeed, many did.) I believe the situation is the same with YouTube captures, though much less is legally capturable.

What would really help is if people adhered to the letter of the law. Then public outrage against current copyright restrictions would grow so heated, the various governments would be forced to revise the laws in favor of the people and rational use (for a change).

If you can access it and record it for personal use, then it isn't stealing. If you reproduce it or send it out again or in some way profit from it, then you're no longer in a personal use question. You can record television programs to watch again, whether with VCR or DVR, etc., and I would argue this is just the same.

I use a web site where you plug in the URL of the video you want to save and then give it a name and save it. http://keepvid.com is the place where I first saved Susan Boyle's performance on YouTube so I could put it in my mp3 player. It worked fine.
