BS: PCC rejects Moir homophobia complaint

Homophobia: one of the last bastions of acceptable prejudice. And apparently it's perfectly acceptable to defame someone in the press immediately after their death, as long as they're gay. Depressing.

Stephen Gately PCC complaint rejected

Well, hatred of Roma is probably more widely tolerated, but let that pass. But who could give credibility to a Press watchdog, which has the editor of the Daily Mail (almost Limbaugh foaming for US readers) as chair of its code of practice committee?

Agreed. But with 25,000 complaints, you'd think they'd feel under some pressure to find against Jan Moir. I mean, it's not simply "one person's perspective" - the things she said were outright lies.

by the way: agreed re the hatred of Roma. That's why I said "one of" rather than "the". :)

When the death of such a young public personality is described simply as having occurred "of natural causes," people will be curious/puzzled, and some people will assume that there's something to hide.

I'm not saying it's right, or that celebrities' families don't have a right to privacy, but when the public has reason to suspect that some facts are being held back, some will suspect the worst, some will say so out load, and distateful reactions become more likely to find their way into print because they would be seen as catering to a potential audience.

Cross-referencing this discussion with the thread on the newly appeared ads, I can't help but smile at the way the appearance of the word 'homophobia' summons up an ad for Queer As Folk.....

I do hope those who post (ahem) less-than-pro-gay stuff in some long-running other threads are bracing themselves for what might be about to show up on their screens.

But Poppagator, it wasn't just the offensive stuff about Stephen Gately himself. It was things like the allegation that his death dispels the "myth" of the happily-ever-after civil partnership. The implication was that depravity and immorality are fundamental to the homosexual way of life, and that gay men are virtually incapable of fidelity.

It was out and out homophobia.

The PCC is there to provide a figleaf for the press so that the press do not have to face legally binding regulation. It is a club for the boys.

Self-regulation. It's a joke. Mark Thomas addressed it very well on The Manifesto (R4, 6:30) this evening.

Yes, it was homophobia. He dies of natural causes, just like many other people.

Except the story was to prove that a gay lifestyle leads to "natural causes."

Don't be too worried. the press reckon we vote on the basis of what we are told by them.

Sadly, it seems to be true for enough people to make a difference.

The PCC is necessary, as I for one would not like the idea of a government adjudicating what is right and wrong to publish, and self regulation is the only credible option. Except in this case, it is the fifth estate regulating itself and that is scary....

Oh, to use the logic of the original article and to turn it on ti;s head. Anybody who speaks out against gay people are closet gay / lesbian themselves.

If you apply this to some of the weird threads on mudcat, you can at least go to bed smiling..
