BS: societal impacts of provocative dress

I am not comfortable with the "do they deserve it" thread. No, no one deserves anything bad happening. I do think this is behavior that needs to be looked at closely, because I think the impacts on society are severe in some cases. mg

Rape is not a sexual act, it's an act of power and dominance over another. There is no excuse or reason for it.

Nobody thinks anyone deserves it but I think that some think that other people think that they deserve it. mg

What kind of dress are we talking about?

And what kind of impact does it have?

KKK outfits?

SS uniforms?

Mod?

Rocker?

New romantic?

Carnival costume?

Bikini?

Denim?

Leather?

Do we mean in hot countries or cold ones?

Saudi Arabia or Tahiti?

I think you need to work out what your question is.

Defining 'provocative' is, of course, something we could argue about for **months**............

Elegant

Not quite so elegant..

I guess that one man's 'meat' is another man's Audrey Hepburn...

Seems to me that some women nowadays put themselves in more danger than ever before, by behaving in a loutish, unfeminine and highly boorish manner...

But hell, what do I know...? :0)

And the 'societal impact' is the grooming of our children, from a younger and younger age....along with all the terrible dangers that entails..

Never mind, though...'Sexual Fantasy Feminism' has joined forces with 'Paedeophiles R Us' it would seem.

Ho hum....

I expect the Suffering Suffragettes must be Suffering even more in their deaths, than they ever did in their lives, looking down on their Sisters....

I guess society is in serious danger.

As demonstrated by Bill D's warning picture, the question becomes "provoking what"??

Looking attractive to mates--because one wants to find a mate and fit in with a mating society like ours--provokes thoughts of mating.

Thoughts of mating are normal byproducts of consciousness impinging on protoplasm.

It is arguable that even the sexiest female attire is designed to provoke thoughts of mating, assessment of candidacy, and other mental or emotional reactions; but not intended to provoke violation or physical force.

The fact that in some individual, thoughts of mating degrades into physical force is actually, I would hazard, an artifact of repression.
Some people --borderline personality cases, for example--have a hard time holding a firm line between "want" and "can't have" and the tension makes them explode, and crime, greater or lesser is born.

adding this... when I was in high school, 53+ years ago, skirts were worn way below the knee, but the 'in' thing was gauzy, see-thru blouses that showed very clearly what type of bra she was wearing. Why did they 'get by' with it? Because no one had thought to ban them.
I don't remember any two piece swim suits then.
The situation began changing very quickly about the time Sputnik was launched, and the novel "Lady Chatterly's Lover" was released in the US.

There are variable 'standards', and I don't know how to evaluate them, but I DO know that censorship it rapidly dying...even as a possibility. The WWW has changed everything.....and it now shows us ...*shudder*... just what a strange species we belong to.

I think there are quite a few and I think there are various comorbidities that go along with it...if it is done in a California I am on the beach surfer girl way, probably less so, but if it is done with a certain edge, then yes.

I think one of the main problems is the disturbance it causes to men, certainly those who have trouble with impulse control and are on the edges of society for various reasons, but also those who are trying to be true to marriage vows, relationships, religious dogma etc. Do I think we have to respect that? Yes, morally. Not legally probably.

It can inspire a rage in men who know that people are displaying themselves and they, the men, have no chance whatsoever at some of these women. People pretty much know where they stand in the pecking order. There are various religious and racial and other taboos that people still practice. These men are hurt by this female behavior. Should they just get over it? OK, sure. On the bus, or in a government office? No. They should not be provoked. I would not go out of my way to a nude beach and complain about nudists. But when I do not have an alternative, and these people are using public money in some way, they should dress and behave in order not to ruffle feathers. mg
