Kendall's new thread -Update - procedure May 6th

04 Mar 10 - 12:39 PM (#2855998)
Subject: BS: Kendall's new thread
From: kendall

Some of you have complained that when a thread gets too long you can't open it, and the old one has pretty much run its course, so here is what's up.
I'm still having serious pain in my throat, it is hell to swallow and cough. Just had x rays this am to rule out pneumonia. Is there no end?
It looks like a trip to Mass. General on Monday.

Thanks for your update, Kendall. I'm sorry you've had such trouble. Patience is a small word for an enormous quality.

May you find relief and rest with a liberal dose of laughter.

Sorry Captain. Have they given you mega-doses of antibiotics in the meantime? Something for the pain?
You must be so tired of this crap.

Fortunately it is still light out. And NO SCREAMING! That will really hurt. hopefully, you have Jacqui's cold and by Monday you'll feel better.

So sorry Kendall. No screaming and no laughing out loud either. What are you permitted to have that may soothe the pain? Did the doc say how long the pain might last?

Hope it is as SINS said, just Jacqui's cold and will be gone soon.

Yo, Cappy... catching jac's cold and coughing (even more) after what was done is bound to make a BIG HURT on ya. BUT, as long as ya ain't coughin up blood or shittin black stool, TRY (I know) not to worry about it.

The x rays are clear, so they say, but what the hell is making all this crap in my lungs?
I asked Jacqui if she has ever felt like she has lived long enough and she said "No".
Two plus weeks of unrelenting pain is enough to shiver even my timbers.

I would imagine both vinegar and orange juice are completely out of the question while Kendall is healing.

It all is a bit much, though -- and there's a few of us who'd really LIKE to scream (especially if we could do it in harmony in the same key, right Maeve?)

Alas, Kendall. I know you've got more voice than you've had for years, but not enough for a decent scream. But I found out the scream only makes you feel better for a couple minutes.

Why can't this "one thing after another" include a couple really GOOD things?!?

That cold you caught is making the rounds gave me nasty green and brown crap that felt as if it was coming up from my toes. I was miserable. Cost me two sick days. I can't imagine how you deal with the added hurt from the surgery.
Herbal tea with honey may soothe yor throat a bit.
I hate to say it but you have to keep keeping on for a while more (seven years and counting, sigh). Damn little kid with his cough!

If it's the same congested cough making the rounds down her Capt'n its viral and just plain obnoxious. It takes at least a few weeks. Zach has been fighting it for a month now and complaining about throat pain (without surgery)   Antibiotics can't touch the virus stuff it really is a wait for the body to kick it out sort of thing...

Hugs, honey and tea.....

I had that cold in late January/early February and it still hangs on with a cough and a drip. You will survive but it is nasty meantime.

Is this screaming into the night a clothing optional event? Can anyone join in? My place or yours?

Morris is a cat. Kendall is a Morse.

I see an Olympic Harpoon lit with whale oil atop Mt Katahdin while a hoard of naked 'Catters galumph around it with strategically placed banjos and guitars and a scattering of shaky eggs.

Did anyone else see that embarrassing Olympic introduction of the native Canadian tribes? We can pull that off easily.

As to the pain, I think the chloraseptic is a really good idea. Are the docs just not offering any alternative pain control/meds.?

Too bad ya can't have some herb tea.

Man, catching a cold at the worst time really sucks. I feel for ya.

I know this is paltry in comparison, but... last slice and dice, in the recovery, the nurse assigned to me (and a few others) was sniffling and wiping on the back of her gloves. Sure enough, two days later, when I was released, I had a cold. Imagine... in a NURSE recovery with a cold!

At one point, I did have a good laugh... as much as I could. The blood pressure monitor was on auto at ten minute intervals. It had a medium sized band and there wasn't a lot of velcro secured. I knew what was gonna happen. Sniffles was writing on my chart when it flew off and she dropped pen and paper when it flew toward her. Wish it had smacked her in the head.

Ya know, come to think of it, that last time I was on the slab it was over 5 hours. My throat was not part of that slice and dice but it hurt like hell for several days from the intubation (which had aslo occured for aboy an hour and a half three eweeks prior)... and the coughing, of course.

Anyway, bud... I think of you often and hope this eases up on ya soon.

May I suggest avoiding dairy products and using steam to help with the catarrh.

For the pain maybe a wheat bag (neck pack) frozen instead of microwaved and placed on your throat.

Hoping you get relief very soon.

Kendall, whatcha need is some of that there "Maine Medicinals" elderberry stuff--"Antho-immune" I think they call it. I've been swigging it all winter and it's supposed to fight all the bad beasties...haven't had my usual winter bouts of pneumonia or any colds or sore throats, which is quite unusual for me. Yep, it's supposed to be good for what ails ya... but if it doesn't cure anything, there's still enough alcohol in it to make the swig a treat.

(If you CAN have herbal tea at some point, "Throat Coat" from "Traditional Medicinals" is more soothing than anything else I've found, owing to the wild cherry bark and slippery elm. 'Course, that assumes you can swallow, or at least manage to drizzle things down without too much pain.)

--Cuilionn (who suggests punching a pillow or writing enraged letters to random newspaper editors as nice alternatives to screaming...)

sorry about that
wheat bag

works a treat on headache and arthritis. I am thinking your throat is bruised as well as raw from the surgery. There may be some swelling too. Soft frozen pack may be just the thing to ease inflammation.

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new thread
From: katlaughing

That's a good idea, Tam. I think I posted this a while back: my doc said pain and cold travel the same pathways and cold trumps pain, so ice on should give some relief.

Ice in a ziploc bag wrapped it in a towel. Never apply directly.

06 Mar 10 - 09:39 AM (#2857532)
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's new thread
From: VirginiaTam

Chunks of ice are not very comfortable. The towel does not permit the cold to get through very well. Too much barrier.

The wheat bag is ideal, because there are no pointy bits jabbing into tender places (please try to keep your minds out of the gutter fellas) and it it already wrapped in fabric, so you don't get shock of cold against the skin and it will wrap nicely round the neck in any direction, front to back or back to front.

Last night, about midnight, Kendall woke up having difficulty breathing. I took him to the ER, where they hooked him up to saline and steroids, did blood tests, chest x-rays and an EKG and decided that he now had some pneumonia so they were going to keep him in. I left him there at 6.00am this morning, just waiting for a bed to be made ready.

When I went in this afternoon, after getting some sleep, he was looking a bit better. they have him on three broad spectrum antibiotics and an anti fungal, to offset the antibiotics and steroids that he has been on this past couple of weeks. I haven't actually talked to the doctor yet, so don't know when they are thinking about turning him loose, but, right now, he's in the best place.

Hopefully, they will get the pneumonia under control fairly fast and this bloody awful cold will have run its course, making it easier for him to swallow. I've let Dr Z's office know the latest, just in case they want anything done that hasn't been so far.

Mary insisted on driving me to and from the hospital and took me out to dinner this evening. She was probably right about my not driving - I'm feeling a little sleep deprived right now. It's good to have such good friends.

More tomorrow, once we have more info.

Back on line at home with a loaner computer from Kendall. I know Jacqui is not fit to drive when I am the one who can find our way back to the parking lock. She took us to the basement with great authority.

Kendall looked like hell when we arrived Saturday but Jacqui and the girls set him to rights. He actually got some color back and was laughing at a TV show when we left.

Another crisis averted. And we did enjoy trying out the new Indian restaurant in town.

Kendall looked a lot better - he slept fairly well, thanks to pain pills and has a lot more colour today. He's drifting in and out of naps, which is good and is well enough to complain about the food.

Tomorrow he will be having an ECG - he has been getting spells of atrial filbrilation, bought on, I think, by stress, but they want to check his heart to make sure all is well. His local ENT will also be in to check on him. He's still hooked up to antibiotics and oxygen, although they have been reducing the amount of oxygen he has been getting. It would not surprise me if they kept him in tomorrow, but we will see what the day brings.

Good Morning, Kendall & Jacqui--

This morning there are a hundred wild songbirds swooping and flittering and chirping about the bare trees in our dooryard, and another skein of wild geese has flown over, honking and flapping their way northward. I suspect they're carrying the news that Kendall will soon be back home, doing his own fair share of honking and flapping...

Healing blessings and sweet restfulness to both of you in the meantime!

While it snows in the Banana Belt of Colorado! Big, fat, soft flakes not sticking much, but still snow, here, is unheard of in March.:-) Puir cats are left with no sun to worship in the windows and the cat tv (birds in the front and side yards seen from strategically placed windows) is on the fritz. Hope this brings a smile.

Kendall, as one who had pee-new-moan-ee-ah last year, I am telling you to take it very easy and let your body heal up. Maybe you should take up crocheting to pass the time. I am sure Jacqui could teach you.**BG**

Take care the three of you (thanks, Mary, for being there) and we'll keep sending lot of good thoughts, healing Light, and love.

So let's get down to details here......What parts y'all got hanging out and can you give us a detailed description? Photos would be better but I I have a good imagination so if you could just go into some detail I can fill in...so to speak. I think Rap and gnu might be interested as well..........

Update.

I went in early this morning after a 7.00am phone call from Kendall to say that he had had some breathing problems. They had decreased the oxygen supply and he wasn't ready for that.

He could be better - he's still got some pneumonia and they are concerned that his heart occasionally beats a little too fast, but I think that is down to the stress of the illness and not getting enough rest. They finally gave him a sedative to help him relax and will be giving him a sleeping tablet tonight to see if he can get some quality sleep. Hopefully that will sort out the heart problem.

He's had various tests, ECG, CAT scan, bloodwork and we're waiting for the result of those to come back.

His ENT was in today and checked on his throat. Apart from some inflammation at the surgery site, which is to be expected, he looks fine in that regard, which set Kendall's mind at ease a little.

I can't see him coming out for at least a couple of days right now - he's still on oxygen and intermittent IV antibiotics to clear the infection.

We'll take it day by day.

If you want to send a card he's in

Room 512 Richards,
Maine Medical Center
22 Bramhall Street,
Portland, Maine 04102.

The Captain finds hospitals very stressful. The last time he was in Mercy he found himself in Cardiology because of the stress brought on by constant noise (an old fart with a TV and radio going loud enough to be heard out by the elevators) and sleep interruptions. The hospital's attitude was that the old man wanted it on so it stayed on - screw everyone else. Keep in mind the TV was fitted with a personal speaker but the crank refused to use it.
I was having heart palpitations listening to the stupidity of the nurses explaining that they couldn't make him turn it down.
So I am not surprised that Kendall is having palpitations. He wants to be home in his own bed but even he knows he is not well enough to come home yet.
Meantime Jacqui is on the visiting hours roller coaster. Becca and Deb are helping her out. Good people like their Dad.

It's OK VT - that incident happened two years ago at another hospital. I've made sure that Maine Med is well aware of what noise levels do to Kendall's stress ratings. Right now he is slightly deaf - most likely catarrh in the Eustachian Tubes - so can manage any noise that may be around.

The good news is that, when I went in this morning, he looked about 200% better than yesterday. They had fed him a sleeping pill and Benylin and he had a good night's sleep for the first time in about two weeks. He had finished with one lot of antibiotics, has only one more shot of one of the others and they may finish the third one orally, rather than by IV. They are starting him on blood thinners, as they are still concerned that his heart rate is a bit too fast, but, if he continues to improve the way he has he should be allowed out late tomorrow, or, failing that, Thursday.

He has been up and walking around the ward, which is excellent, and just looks so much brighter. We finally got the laptop connected to the internet (thank you Jess!) so he has had that to play with today.

Right now we're planning on lobster for dinner when they let him loose - he deserves that!

So Karen and I left here as soon as she came home at 8:30 this morning and I took the hospital phone number I had looked up with me. After meetings with two attorneys followed by three school officials we then picked up Tris and stopped for lunch. Next, and in between my two Docs appointments in the afternoon, Karen stopped by her lab so Tris could schmooze with "Aunt Cheryl" who is constantly sending him things. I stayed in the car and called Kendall.

I was going to tell you how sorry I was about another hospitalization but how confident I was that all would work out. I was going to tell you that you need to to say thanks to any powers that you have stock in for Jacqui and your fine daughters. I was even going to put in a special word for Sins and how glad I am she moved up there. I had a few other admissions I was going to tell you too.

But you were gone. Gone home. Nobody but the operator to talk to there. It was exceedingly disappointing on a number of levels and I was also sort of pissed I had gone to all the trouble to look up the number, take it along with me, work a call into my schedule on this somewhat busy day, and be prepared to to tell you how much I actually DO worry about your sagging old ass. But you were gone.

So I am now left to just post here to you and after all of the above including the pissed off disappointment, I have decided to simplify my message...................

............go fuck yourself............

Great news. Take 'Guest' Carols' advice and go steady, it has been a strain on your body let alone your mind so use some four letter words, 'time', rest, wait and soon you'll feel much better. It's been good to read of your improvement. I don't know you, but you're obviously a popular cookie, so loved by 'catters'. Rest easy.
Best wishes to you and Jacqui,

Yeah, so? Ya' started again didn't you? As one who has needed to be on a vent half a dozen times in the past dozen years, I can tell you its all good unless you don't start again. So just forget about it.

Now go and give your nuts a good scratchin'.....then get on with the job at hand which is healing up and not being a pain in the ass to everyone around you.   That's the part I always have trouble with since I'm a natural born pain in the ass anyway.

The hands are a long dick and a short dick, with the pendulum being a pair of hairy gonads. [Donated by Hilary Clinton]

Porn? You mean Spaw's link? I thought it was rather artistic, given that it was "retro", exemplifying nude photograhy of 60s style and shot with B&W film. Indeed, the angle, lighting and composition indicate to me that the photog took great care in composing and executing the pic in such fashion as to convey to the viewer a sense of what a great set of tits she has.

Bravo! Bravo! ENCORE!

As for pictures of the exterior of the house, I will post something tomorrow I can't seem to find the photos I know I had before of the exterior of the house. It's an odd spot between the turret and large windows in the next room, but after glancing at google maps view perhaps it is where the very steep and two story high peaked roof meets the house in an odd cross section...

The heavy rains we had later in the weekend that came straight down, all normal like, didn't leak at all.... We've actually looked at a spot above our heads for 11 years wondering what happened in the past to cause a leak in such a strange place.....

Safe internet practices state I must refrain from posting any more personal photos of flashing at this location.

No Rap - definitely Pepsi.

We went on a tour of the Glenmorangie distillery - the last stop was to sample a dram of the magic brew.

The very proper Scottish lady guide (think Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) told us that we would have a sip of the neat product and then a little drop of water would be added to bring out the flavour. Kendall just told her that he never took water with his Scotch, but if she had a Diet Pepsi.....

Now that's just weird. Just today I was looking for remedies for removing the sticky adhesive left behind from contact paper (Fablon) and found this

"Highly acidic colas can work wonders on removing contact paper adhesive."

If it dissolves glue, what must it do to your innards? Isn't the whiskey caustic enough?

Sinsull, I understand that, caustic as it is, cola is not as strong as stomach acid itself. Regurgitation is the answer.

Sometime back in the 70s I heard that colas could be used to wash out truck radiators.

I hated the caffine taste & couldn't drink them, so this was a good reason not to drink 'em when people asked me.

Why fool with sticky cola for the acid? Just use vinegar.

Virginia, I found myself Googling several of the places you named in your video, and just distracted myself with a very nice virtual tour of the Isle of Skye and a bit of a look around Rhum. Thank you very much!

Sounds like fun, if you can make the trip, Kendall and Jacqui!

If Jacqui and Kendall can do a self catering holiday to north west Scotland, I recommend Minch View Cottage.

I spent nearly every evening in the entrance porch, playing guitar, singing and watching sea (and sunsets which was surprisingly often for the one week we stayed). Even the bathroom had view of the sea.

thanks for the vinegar tips... I will try that today.

hugs to Jacqui and Kendall... Y'all take good care of yourselves and each other.

I'm doing better each day. Finally found out why my new old car didn't run right. The timing was way off; it's a wonder it ran at all.

The sending unit in the gas tank doesn't work, just a gob of rust, so I'm soaking it overnight in Coca Cola. It probably is too far gone but the Coke aint fit to drink anyway.

He plays the banjo, the Six string and twelve string guitars, not at the same time. He sings and tells stories - whoppers. He fixes up old cars and, though he curses like a sailor the entire time, claims to enjoy it. He is married to Jacqui - AKA Saint Jacqui of the Bedpan, The Shawl Lady, The Evil Twin, and occasionally The Bitch.
Seamus is their dog not an Irish singer.
Kendall wears a black leather jacket with a black hat and Jacqui usually arranges a baby blue shirt to show off his eyes. Sometimes we are allowed to touch but not often and not just anywhere.

I will update the manual and post it.

First of all, seein' as God is gonna get your voice better, He is expectin' some new material so...

...get busy!!!

Secondly, seein' as the Chev don't get much drivin' of late me thinks that part of yer timing problems is in a gummed up plate in the distributor that won't slide when the vacuum pulls in... That ain't gonna allow you enough advance and that means yer Chev is gonna run crummy... You know, kinda like you of late... lol... Spray the plate liberally with BrakeClean or CRC to free it up and then a little lithium (white) grease on the plate and a little points lube on the lobed part of the distributor shaft where the points go up-n-down... Yeah, you do that that yer Chevy will run almost as good as a Ford... lol...

Bobert - he solved the problem with the Chevy - he got another car, which I will leave him to talk about.

As Dr Z told us, his voice is now very growly - he is using his false vocal cords to make sound - and it is not likely that Kendall will ever have a singing voice back. He still isn't sure that he has sufficient voice to be able to get involved in group conversation, but we shall see what happens over time.

Many thanks for all the good thoughts, of whatever persuasion, that have been coming our way through all of this. Thanks for all the humour, which has occasionally helped through some bad days for both of us. We do appreciate your all being there.

Hi Kendal & Jacqui

I have reported earlier that my wife I have been through what Kendal and you are experiencing right now.

We know the fluctuations hopes and disappointments that happen all along the way.

I too was at a stage when my voice was "growly" and talking was a problem. I too was advised that I would never be able to sing again.

Naturally at first we were upset but we decided that we were lucky in the circumstances to still be together and still have our lives and family to share.

As time went by I found that my voice was improving ( slightly) day by day. I am not the most patient person around but I latched on to what I had and let nature and the doctors' help take it's course.

I am pleased to say that my speaking voice is now back where it once was, OK ever so slightly husky.

Some time ago I decided to take out my guitar and try to see if I could still play. A broken hand, age and not playing anything have taken their toll of my playing, but I can swish across a few chords.

So I tried to sing. Obviously I started singing with not much power and very little stretch of range but as we all know here, many old folk songs are relatively simple to sing and play if that's what you want to do.

Practice ( but nowhere near as much as I used to do) has improved my guitar work and surprisingly my voice has come on too.

I find it difficult to get in the right key to sing and my range is still limited but I am pleased with the result.

I write this only as an encouragement and obviously you have to heed to medical advice.

My best wishes go out to both of you.

Kind Regards

MikeL2

Really? Didn't you hear about the price of edible panties being reduced by 45%? That was prettty exciting as well as the article I read that stated the latest research shows that ants will still follow a sugar trail almost anywhere.

Also Kendall is quite wrong about "one is not licked until one gives up."   Back in '79 I stopped in a "massage parlor" on Monteagle that truckers called the "Burger King Brothel" because you could have it your way. I went into the room with this redhead and said, "Lick me all over bitch," and she did.

"'Tis the voice of the Lobster: I heard him declare
'You have baked me too brown, I must sugar my hair.'
As a duck with its eyelids, so he with his nose
Trims his belt and his buttons, and turns out his toes.
When the sands are all dry, he is gay as a lark,
And will talk in contemptuous tones of the shark;
But, when the tide rises and sharks are around,
His voice has a timid and tremulous sound."

Common Law requires an x amount of time, right? You could make it serial- three years with this one, one year with the next, etc. Or you could agree with your partner that the night before Common Law kicks in, you kick her or him out. You could always get back together the next month or so.

Speaking of ploding- there's an old joke that goes:

A man had been down in the mouth all day and finally burst into tears. Aghast, his friends asked him what was the matter.

He sobbed, Twenty years ago I thought seriously about killing my wife. And I can't get it out of my mind that I would have gotten out of prison today.

We know what they look like because, of course, they kill each other when they mate and people find the bodies. This photo gives an idea of what they look like -- cute little buggers, but nobody's ever seen a live one. They even kill film and digital cameras, even those installed on satellites.

Let's try to resubmit this one. It finally happened to me. After three attempts, a posting did not register on the 'Cat.

There are three basic ways to lie effectively:
1: Tell the truth in such a way that no one believes it.
2: Tell a lie embedded in a truth, so that the truth will seem to validate the lie.
3: Tell a flat out lie believably.

Then, of course, there is the willing suspension of disbelief.

Ah, for the days of my youth!

I have posted before the great scientific work of the late and very great Allen Sherman but it bears repeating here.............

WHY LIES ARE BETTER THAN THE TRUTH

(A SCIENTIFIC COMPARISON TEST)From THE RAPE OF THE APE, BY Allen Sherman
Chicago, Playboy Press, 1973
Pps 56-59

I. Credibility

All Lies are designed to seem true. The expert liar carefully uses elements that seem probable and logical and are therefore easy to believe. On the other hand, The Truth is often illogical, wildly improbable and hard to explain.

Lies are more believable than the truth.

II. Reliability

The Truth is spontaneous, accidental, and unpredictable. Lies, however, can be planned in detail long in advance and are thus guaranteed to turn out as predicted.

Lies are more dependable than The Truth.

III. Economy

To be The Truth, an account of a given event must be completely accurate. This requires painstaking resourcefulness, expensive research, time-consuming attention to detail, complex logistics and thoroughness. In spite of all that, some people will believe it and others will not. A Lie will produce identical results without all the fuss and bother.

Lies are simpler than Truth: Lies cost less than Truth in time, money, and effort.

IV. Value

The Truth can be found anywhere; it belongs to anybody who finds it,
absolutely free. Lies are custom-made, often by experts, and the best ones are highly polished works of art.

Lies are worth more money than Truth. Have you ever heard of anyone bribing a witness to tell The Truth?

V. Respectability

A. Great fortunes have been made by selling Lies to the public. The people who sell these Lies are often grateful to the gullible customers, so they endow libraries and universities and cultural centers.
B. Nobody ever made a fortune selling The Truth. First of all, as already stated, The Truth is free. The only people who will pay money for The Truth are people who are being blackmailed--and they are only buying The Truth so they can hide it before anybody else sees it.

Lies lead to libraries and universities, while The Truth leads to blackmail.

VI. Stability

A. Take a thousand parts Truth, add one part Lie. Result: a lie.
B. Take one thousandth part lie, add one part Truth. Result: again a Lie.
C. Note that you can make a Lie out of Truth, but you can't make The Truth out of a Lie.

Lies are stronger and last longer than The Truth.

VII. Imagination

In reporting The Truth, a person must research the precise facts and stick to them exactly as they occurred. The liar can report the same incident without doing any research, merely saying whatever comes to mind and filling in details according to his fancy.

Lies are more creative than The Truth.

VIII. Recognizability

People are accustomed to hearing Lies all the time. If you tell The Truth, people will think you are lying. If you convince them you are telling The Truth, they will become suspicious. Why is he suddenly telling The Truth? What is going on?

IX. Supply and Demand

A. In describing any given incident, only one version can possibly be The Truth, whereas the number of Lies possible is unlimited. Obviously, Lies are in far greater supply than The Truth.
B. There is a great demand for Lies, if they are flattering, if they build up one's hopes, if they help one escape reality or if they promise health wealth, power or potency. Nobody is very anxious to hear The Truth. The only people who demand The Truth are those who are investigating something (lawyers, etc.)--and they only want The Truth to prove someone is lying.

Lies are the acceptable medium of exchange in our society. They are in good supply and the demand for them remains strong. The Truth is in extremely short supply, but even this tiny supply far exceeds the demand. Thus, in our society, Truth occupies a position identical to that of dinosaur shit.

Conclusions:

Lies are superior to Truth in numerous ways.
Lies are more ingenious;
Lies make the world seem more pleasant;
Lies are less embarrassing than Truth; and less frightening.
Furthermore, in such fields are diplomacy, statesmanship, merchandising, advertising, public relations and bookkeeping.
The Truth is an out-and-out handicap.
In friendship, Truth is harmful; in love, it is disastrous.

My prediction is that The Truth will be phased out of our society, almost unnoticed, in less than a generation. It will become a curio like the two-dollar bill. Probably, there will be museums where samples of The Truth will be displayed for the benefit of curious children who want to know what it was like. One can only hope that the curators of these Truth Museums will have the good taste not to fake the exhibitions.

The Truth is that The Truth has become old-fashioned. It's full of odd shaped little nooks and crannies, like so many old fashioned things, some people find them fascinating, but most people find them a pain in the neck. For those who care, it is a wonderful feeling to hold The Truth in your possession, to keep it and cherish it, never misuse it, then pass it along freely to anyone who wants it, giving it to them undamaged, unpainted, unadded to and unsubtracted from and every bit as glowingly alive as ever. To find all those joys in the handling of The Truth is a labor of love, but most of us in today's society have no time for such things.

Paid? You should do it from the sheer love of it, from the art of it, for it springs from the roots of your very being, your very soul.

I love the fact that a thread about Kendall has evolved into a thread about the nature of the difference between truth and lies. As a professional tale teller [read liar], I believe we are going in the right direction.

I believe that Sherman and Twain both derived their fundamental premises from the same well of truth. Twain's cri de couer [sp?] about the entropic relationship between society and the truth is analogous to the breast beaters who are still crying about the deterioration of education, taxes... [add your own to the list.] The professional Lookers with Alarm would love this article if they were able to read it.

There are no new stories. All are variations of older ones.
That is, unless one can honestly say, "This happened to me"

As an example, this is true; I was there and saw and heard it myself. It was at a friend's wedding.
I was standing outside the church and a relative of the groom came out with a glass of champagne. He stood there swapping pleasantries when suddenly, his wife appeared, and when she saw that drink she said to him, "You know, the state of Maine just lowered the illegal drinking age to .08, and that one drink for a man your size will put you over the limit."
He looked at me with a fake horror expression and he said, "Oh my goodness, I have to put on some weight."
That is so typically Maine.

Women march topless in Portland without incident

The marchers want to call attention to the double standard in society's attitudes toward male and female nudity.

By Edward D. Murphy emurphy@mainetoday.com
Staff Writer

PORTLAND – About two dozen women marched topless from Longfellow Square to Tommy's Park this afternoon in an effort to erase what they see as a double standard on male and female nudity.

The women, preceded and followed by several hundred boisterous and mostly male onlookers, many of them carrying cameras, stayed on the sidewalk because they hadn't obtained a demonstration permit to walk in the street. About a thousand people gathered as the march passed through Monument Square, a mix of demonstrators, supporters, onlookers and those just out enjoying a warm and sunny early-spring day.

After the marchers reached Tommy's Park in the Old Port, some turned around and walked back to Longfellow Square, but most stayed and mingled in the park. Some happily posed for pictures.

Police said there were no incidents and no arrests – nudity is illegal in Maine only if genitals are displayed.

Ty McDowell, who organized the march, said she was "enraged" by the turnout of men attracted to the demonstration. The purpose, she said, was for society to have the same reaction to a woman walking around topless as it does to men without shirts on.

However, McDowell said she plans to organize similar demonstrations in the future and said she would be more "aggressive" in discouraging oglers.

"About two dozen women marched topless from Longfellow Square to Tommy's Park"

No one was injured. No one went to jail. Yes, a few people smirked and I'm sure that someone will come up with a video link.

It's nice that such events can happen in a major city (well, in Maine's largest city which ain't too large) without a riot.

Kendall-

I think you mean "age" in your statement:

"the state of Maine just lowered the illegal drinking age to .08"

I don't think even liberal Maine permits babies the age of .08 years to drink alcoholic beverages legally.

First - scoping him without Lidocaine is very traumatic. They did that once. Apparently, (and Jacqui will have more info) there is no suitable substitute. Full anaesthesia isn't good. They used Lidocaine and carefully monitored him (last time he was on his way out the door) so they knew what to do and quickly.
Second, the Captain's birthday is Monday. Your package will be very timely, kat.

We missed 'em -- Tom had an appointment with Dr. Z at 9:00 this morning -- we were out of there in time to catch the 11:05 Downeaster home. (Of course, the train was delayed and didn't arrive in Beantown til 11:30...and I won't tell you about the non-working escalators, etc. that majorly caused Tom some distress while rushing to have our tickets in time for 11:05...)

Sonny gave us a copy of the photo from last time -- Kendall, Jacqui and Tom. (A Boston trip that day would have pushed me over the edge, so I stayed home, fretted until I heard from him, and got yard work done.)

I got home just before 8.00pm. Phoned Kendall - he's finally had something to eat, the hives are just about gone and he's had something to ease the sore throat.

We saw an allergist this afternoon who doesn't think that it's the lidocaine but could be the stuff that they soak the scopes in. They will be doing tests while he's in and we will go back for a follow up in about a month. He is certainly being well cared for there.

He has the operation at about 5pm tomorrow, but the doctor says that it should only be a ten minute procedure. I shall stay there until he comes round and then come back home so it might be a bit of a late post tomorrow.

I'm taking the laptop in tomorrow so Kendall may be able to post, so long as he's not feeling too grouchy for lack of food - he's nil by mouth from midnight tonight!

Kat - the package arrived today so he'll get it when he comes home.

Dan - Kendall's son in law stayed at the house to make sure the package was dealt with properly. Many thanks.

The allergist here in Maine said he was not allergic to lidocaine, however he probably reacted because of the enormous dose he had been given. That was the first time he reacted to it.
I know it's not the same procedure, but I work for Radiology where they use lidocaine a lot and many many people have reactions. There are alternatives. Seems to me they should explore them rather than risk an overnight stay every time he has something done.

Good morning all. I got to the hospital at 11am only to find that they had already taken Kendall down to the OR. I spoke to him at 8am and, at that point, he was till looking at waiting until about 5pm. I've just spoken to his nurse who told me that they took him down at about 10.45, so he should be back in a couple of hours. That is a real relief - the idea of Kendall being starved until late in the day was not good - he does not do well without food.

I'll report further once he's back.

Well, I had an exciting afternoon. Home safe and sound. The Jordan Meats Building, directly across the street from our office, went up in flames about 1:30. I watched the fire from an office window when the power went out. Off to the Ladies in case that last flush might be taken. As I came out, I was told "Evacuate!"
If I learned one thing from September 11, it was go and go fast. Besides we have frequent fire drills with the same message. So down the stairs we all went and out on to the street. Towering flames and smoke - all amazing.
Then word came to go home. Seems while I was in the Ladies, appointed wardens went around telling people to pack and leave. The only message I got was to leave.
There were a few of us in the same boat so we waited until the CEO showed up. He had a master key. We were allowed in and out ASAP. Except all the doors had been locked and our security passes wouldn't open them. I had had it. Leaned against a wall in the stifling building and bitched. Finally a key arrived, we got our stuff and left.
It took almost an hour to get out of the garage also across the street from the fire. Streets were gridlocked. All understandable except two cops leaning on a railing at the Customs House, watching a fire and refusing to notice that someone needed to direct traffic.

Drivers were remarkably civilized and I am home safe and sound. Power is coming back on so I guess I will go in tomorrow.

Good news - no one was hurt. The building was being gutted to renovate into a hotel. From what I saw I doubt it is good for anything but razing now.

I need a nap - six flights down, six flights up, six flights down and no air conditioning as well as no lights.

Sinsull-

Jordan Meats up in flames? Whatever will we do for "red hots"?

Glad you're safe at home, hopefully soaking in the tub with a glass or bottle of wine.

With regard to Kendall viewing "Old Ironsides" I'm reminded of the old salt who stumbled down the pier one night over at the Charlestown Navy Yard and gazed in awe at the famous frigate. Then he taped her side with his fist and exclaimed "They's wood!" I suppose Kendall will want to goose her broadside as well just to be sure!

Cheerily,

Geeziz Sins.....You had a fun day.......Glad you got home okay. RE: the police......I had a colleague when I was with Sun that had an unwritten (obviously) rule about hiring......."no pipe smokers and no ex-cops."   One night I asked him what was his problem with the pipe smokers and cops.

He said pipe smokers spent all their time fiddling with all the pipe paraphernalia instead of smoking. To him, this was a paradigm of how the guy would sell......lots of ground speed, no lift-off. He said ex-cops were lazier than hell and as he was one himself I figured he knew of what he spoke.

BTW......Since Kendall will be there a bit longer for the Monday stuff, maybe they could give him something for the ball rash. I got to thinking though and maybe that's something he got from the Llahma.........

Exciting day all 'round, I guess. In Portsmouth there's a Greyhound bus, supposedly with a bomb on board and one passenger who refuses to leave. Not sure whether the two facts are related -- on one's talking. But police, news trucks, etc. have the traffic totally screwed up and no one can enter or leave the municipal parking garage.

Tom sang on board the Constitution for the retirement ceremony for a naval officer friend, which was, of course, a bit of a thrill for Tom. But it left him a bit frustrated. He really wanted to try out the cannons...which were aimed at Boston.

Take care of yourself, Kendall, and your good lady, whom I guess we won't be seeing this weekend.

Here, Kendall. Memories.

THE BALLAD OF MAD JACK
Steve Romanoff

In a tumbledown graveyard in Barnstable, Mass.,
Hangs a humble reminder to those who might pass
And notice the shingle high over the grave,
That honors the bones of Mad Jack.
He was born Johnny Percival, on Scorton Hill,
A contrary lad from the goin'
He ran off to sea just to prove he was free,
And was sixty long years in returnin'.
With just nine months of school he departed the land,
He moved up from cabin boy hand-over-hand,
Impressed by the English to service their king,
As he jumped overboard they could all hear him sing:

Come a sailor, come a soldier, come a captain, a king,
If you dare me to do it I'll do anything,
I'll take up the fight, I'll even the odds,
I'll do what is right or I'm not from Cape Cod,
I'm Jack the cantankerous cuss from Cape Cod.

In 1813, Jack started to work
On a plan to reopen the port of New York,
The British blockade had everyone down,
So Mad Jack decided to turn it around:
He borrowed a fisherman's smack, so I'm told,
Put goats on the deck and armed men in the hold,
When a tender of Red Coats dared pull him aside,
His men came out shootin' as proudly he cried,

        Chorus

Did you hear how Mad Jack saved "Old Ironsides" too,
From the scrapheap of flagships too old to renew,
At sixty-five years he inspected each shroud,
And promised the Navy he'd make her stand proud.
He collected the finest ship-riggers around,
From Boston, New Bedford, and Old Portsmouth Town,
He rigged her and jigged her and made her stand tall,
Then he sailed her around the world once and for all.

        Chorus (repeat)

We're home at last, bringing with us pet lobsters who will be transformed into a delicious meal tonight. Kendall's lobster weighs in at nearly 3lb and has been named Ralph.

We saw Dr Z this morning, who confirmed that the latest procedure has worked and that Kendall should not have any problems with breathing now. That is a real relief for both of us. When I spoke to Dr Z last week he thought that, given the previous radiation treatment, there was a possibility that he might have to redo this procedure but he now says that this is unlikely.

He also says that, toward the end of the year, he will start tweaking the area to try and give Kendall more of a voice.

The last few days have been fairly hard on us both and we are both just glad to come home today.

We had a great evening with Kendall's family yesterday. Three daughters, one son in law and two grandchildren were able to make it to join in the birthday celebrations. Lots of lobster, some wine (and single malt for Kendall), a beautiful cake made by Deb (middle daughter) laughter and just the joy of being home and in the company of people we care about. This was the antidote to the stress of the last week. I even got Mothers Day cards and presents, not expected but much appreciated.

We both managed to sleep fairly well, but will be taking a couple of days to recharge the batteries.

Rap - be very afraid. We will be seeing you at the Getaway in October and you really don't want to cause offence to ANY of the Evil Sisterhood. Ask Mr Lane what can happen if you do......

Kendall's doing pretty well. We now know that he's allergic to Cidex, the cleanser used on the scopes used to look at his larynx. Most times all he gets is a bout of rhinitis for a few days, but the couple of times that they have squirted more painkiller through the scope the Cidex inside the scope tubing is flushed through and into his system and then it's ER time! There is no alternative to the scope, but they are being extra careful and I will be taking the Epi pen with us when we go in the future.

Good news is that Dr Zeitels is very pleased with the way Kendall is recovering - the area is healing well and he tells us that he hopes to be able to use the gel he is developing in about a year's time, although he has to get funding to take it further at this point.

He is writing up the procedure he carried out on Kendall and it seems that the medical profession is very interested in what he has been doing - it will be a radical departure from the present treatment of this cancer and may lessen the likelihood of total tracheotomies for a lot of patients.

Kendall's voice volume varies with the day. At the weekend he was able to entertain a group of people at a house party, without any problem. If he can get more voice that would be a real bonus.
