So many great songs and singers bringing the streets and the history back to life, and the singing in the Brazen Head when the walk finished was also excellent. The theme will be a little different as this year it will feature songs relating to Dublins history of insurrection and revolution and the people associated with those times. It will be unmissable. We were accompanied by two musicians who sang mainly well known songs in the private upstairs room in each pub. They also asked anyone who wanted to sing, to perform a couple of songs. I would say that it is mainly aimed at tourists and they should enjoy it. I felt it was quite short, being less than two hours long and finishing about 10.00 pm. |

When will you be in Dublin? Góilín is held every Friday at the Teachers' Club in the center of Dublin City. Góilín is the Granddaddy of all singers clubs worldwide and is not to be missed by anybody that has an interest in traditional singing. I think we had 3 pubs, time for a half in each only, but got quite a lot of Dublin history on the way: but we were not invited to sing then. Serious (or even not-so-serious) musicians prob better advised to find a good session - for which there are other threads on this site. The tourist bus is also good value -for tourists - the floozy in the jacuzzi, the tart with the cart (or the mish with the fish) remain in the memory! |

There is a story here in Miltown of a (not song) historical conducted tour around the countryside in the Miltown Malbay area a few decades ago. The group arrived at the Rineen monument, erected to commemorate the ambush of a convoy of Black-and-Tan lorries during the Irish War of Independence in 1921. The guide, a local schoolteacher, was holding forth on the incident when an elderly local man cycled up and stood listening with some interest to the account and eventually shouldered his way through the crowd and began to contradict the speaker, who pointed irately to his notes and drew out a book from his pocket, gesticulating wildly. Eventually the pair withdrew into a field and began to take off their jackets. They were never seen again But it is said that on a certain night in July, at about twelve o'clock, around the time of the Willie Clancy Summer School, two shadowy figures, one in a chalk stained jacket with leather patches (and a strong Mayo accent), the other in a flat cap and much worn dark suit, can be seen hurling themselves at each other and screaming obscenities (in Irish).
