Wondering if anyone here has gone on the Traditional Musical Pub Crawl in Dublin? If so, what did you think of it?

http://www.discoverdublin.ie/musicalpubcrawl.html (sorry, my blue clicky maker isn't working)

No - but we went on the excellent Liberties walk organised for the Frank Harte weekend last year (songs sung outside Zozimus and Biddy Mulligan's houses, etc)
Would highly recommend it should it happen again.

Yes Jim it was fantastic. So many great songs and singers bringing the streets and the history back to life, and the singing in the Brazen Head when the walk finished was also excellent. Barry Gleeson performing By Memory Inspired in the Brazen Head made the hair stand up on the back of my neck, fabulous.

Brilliant day, brilliant weekend, brilliant festival.

A similar tour is in the pipeline for this years Frank Harte Festival. The theme will be a little different as this year it will feature songs relating to Dublins history of insurrection and revolution and the people associated with those times. It will be unmissable. There are disgruntled citizens retreaving pikes from under the thatch as I write.

Hi Jim

I think Robbie McMahon has a few under the thatch up there around Spancil Hill and I think Jerry O'Reilly has one secreted in his beard. Say hello to Pat for me

I did the Pub Crawl a couple of years ago.
It was quite enjoyable.
It involved only two pubs.
We were accompanied by two musicians who sang mainly well known songs in the private upstairs room in each pub.
They also asked anyone who wanted to sing, to perform a couple of songs.
I would say that it is mainly aimed at tourists and they should enjoy it.
I felt it was quite short, being less than two hours long and finishing about 10.00 pm.

It says it goes from 7:30 to 10. It will be our first time in Dublin, so I guess that counts as "tourist". :-) I love to sing....but what Irish trad songs do I know? Yikes.

Hi Walnut

I'm at a loss to know what happened to the detailed message I posted above but it seems to have arrive at Mudcat central totally blank????

When will you be in Dublin?

Góilín is held every Friday at the Teachers' Club in the center of Dublin City. Góilín is the Granddaddy of all singers clubs worldwide and is not to be missed by anybody that has an interest in traditional singing.

If you need to know more pm me and I'll fill you in with what is happening, direction etc. etc.

I did the musical pub crawl a few years back: it was Ok, but I'd agree, more for tourists than for serious folk musicians! I think we had 3 pubs, time for a half in each only, but got quite a lot of Dublin history on the way: but we were not invited to sing then.
Serious (or even not-so-serious) musicians prob better advised to find a good session - for which there are other threads on this site.
The tourist bus is also good value -for tourists - the floozy in the jacuzzi, the tart with the cart (or the mish with the fish) remain in the memory!

There is a problematical side to such events.
There is a story here in Miltown of a (not song) historical conducted tour around the countryside in the Miltown Malbay area a few decades ago.
The group arrived at the Rineen monument, erected to commemorate the ambush of a convoy of Black-and-Tan lorries during the Irish War of Independence in 1921.
The guide, a local schoolteacher, was holding forth on the incident when an elderly local man cycled up and stood listening with some interest to the account and eventually shouldered his way through the crowd and began to contradict the speaker, who pointed irately to his notes and drew out a book from his pocket, gesticulating wildly.
Eventually the pair withdrew into a field and began to take off their jackets.
They were never seen again
But it is said that on a certain night in July, at about twelve o'clock, around the time of the Willie Clancy Summer School, two shadowy figures, one in a chalk stained jacket with leather patches (and a strong Mayo accent), the other in a flat cap and much worn dark suit, can be seen hurling themselves at each other and screaming obscenities (in Irish).
So make sure there are no political monuments included in your tour!!
"Say hello to Pat for me"
Will do Fergie - remember us to the Dubs.

As in the song Biddy McGrath:
So if you're ever in Dublin town
Where Nelson's monument used to be found....................
