Session for Steve & Anne in east London

11 Apr 10 - 03:02 PM (#2884344)
Subject: Session for Steve & Anne in east London
From: Liz the Squeak

On Saturday, May 15th, there's going to be a session at the Black Lion, Plaistow, for anyone who wants to come. It's close to Plaistow Tube station on the District line and near several good bus routes.

The main reason is to enjoy the company of Steve Suffet and Anne Price with their respective spouses, and have a jolly good music session.

The pub does real ales, food and has a beer garden. I'd like to make a reasonably early start - say 7.30ish, so people get a good night out and we don't finish too late.

I'm afraid we can't offer any accomodation other than a floor to sleep on for 2 or 3 friendly ones, but there are a couple of reasonable hotels in nearby Barking, of which this is one. Barking is just 2 stops further on the district line and on major bus routes.

Hope to see you there!

An idea of what type of session would help.

It'll be a come-all-ye. Songs, unaccompanied, accompanied, solo and chorus and tunes (possibly poems and monologues?). No specific traditions specified just what's in peoples repertoire though, given that it's for Steve and Anne, the American content should be quite high.

Actually LTS on the sofa...

The news today is that a research plane is at this very moment being kitted out to fly through the ash cloud and gather info. What that will lead to I don't know, but it's a way of bumping this again to the top.

Airports in the UK are allegedly opening at 7.00am tomorrow but that could depend on many things. Finland have just closed theirs this afternoon.

Good luck!

Micca,

Thank you for the kind words. Anne, Marilyn, and I all look forward to seeing you again, provided that volcano permits us to be there. We are, however, optimistic. Anne and I even plan to rehearse later today.

By the way, Marilyn and I recall meeting you at Sharps in 2006, two years before the party at Liz's house.

Take care.

Greetings:

I am beginning to fear that the long planned visit to the UK with my musical partner Anne Price, our respective spouses, and another couple may not happen. So far our plans remain unchanged, but so does the closure of UK airspace even as countries on the Continent begin to reopen their own. Sooner or later one or the other will have to give way. And as each update passes, later becomes sooner. Nevertheless, please do not count us out. If we can get there, we will!

Today plans have been announced to send in the Navy to bring home stranded Britons. Alas no plans yet to ferry would-be tourists in to Britain. We hope it's over soon. I did read also, that the dust cloud is U.S. and Canada bound.

Please tell all your friends and let's make this a special evening!

Big thank you to everyone who came - it was a splendid way to spend a Saturday night!

Steve and Anne were in good voice, I'm only sorry I didn't get to chat with you more and that more musicians didn't come. I hope the rest of your visit is enjoyable!

Those who did come were treated to a jolly evening of singing, stories and shanties - but enough said about them the better!

Thank you all again!

We made it home without any delay. Our flight touched down at JFK at 7:25 last evening, our luggage came quickly, we cleared immigration and customs just as quickly, and there was no wait for taxicabs. Marilyn and I were back in our house around 8:30 PM. But then we live in Queens, the same borough where the airport is located. Anne and Wayne live in the Bronx, so it would have taken then perhaps 20 to 30 minutes longer.

Once again, thank you to LIz for arranging this, to Paul who got to the Black Lion to set up, to the Santy Annas for their fine chantey singing, to Leadfingers with all his instruments, and to everyone else who made the evening so enjoyable.

If any among you plan to come to New York, please let us know so we can reciprocate the kindness.

Yes, of course.

I already mentioned the Shanty Annas to the other program committee members of the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club. If you gals ever come to America please let us know, and Anne and I will see if the club can arrange something.

One committee member, however, asked if the group had a demo CD available, or at least a video on YouTube. I laughed and said, "Let's book them before they do. Otherwise we'll never be able to afford their fee. Trust me. They're that good."
