Confused of Beccles, UK

Subject: STILL Confused!
From: Bev Lawton

I've been away a while and even when I was here regularily I was still confused anyway (hang in there - you will be soon too!) Could I have an official (or at least humourous)family tree of the CAT dynasty please. I require (at the very least!) official/unofficial pairings(Possums omitted please) and relationships between all CAT like posters. It would help, really! and save a fortune on the tablets. Believe it or not this is actually a serious request as I can't work out who's begatted to who in the Moggydom. Many thanks for your (undoubted piss taking) help in the near future! Bev Lawton

Well, Bev, here's what I know, which isn't much:

Rick Fielding & Heather "Duckboots" - Toronto, he does the radio program "Acoustic Workshop", on Monday nights on CIUT; there are several threads about it.

Catspaw49 & Karen - Bremen, Ohio - tons of threads on HIM! But, please don't bring any of the ones up about his near-death hospital stay and recovery from this Spring! It would scare the bejaysus out of us!

My housemate/lifemate/hoosband is Roger, but he doesn't post on here.

There are several threads which will tell you a lot more about everyone, such as (these are their exact names, so you can go to the Forum Search and pull each one up for a good read):

What does a mudcatter do?
How Old is a Mudcatter?
Best/Worst Job List
Music Therapy
Favorite Flowers and yard decor
Brief Mudcat Biographies
BS-What was yout high school/UK equivalent?

And, I know there is one about where we all live, I think it is "Where in the world" or somesuch.

Hi Bev,

As Kat already mentioned my lifemate is Rick Fielding but I have a few other Cat-o-nections. br>
Knockers, sorry, I mean Knock-Knee'd One is my sister who lives in Glasgow

Cat-A-Tonic, who's been sleeping a lot lately and hasn't posted much, is my one of my best friends.

Peter T. is fast becoming a good friend and is one of Rick's guitar students as well as being a recognized Canadian environmentalist

Sandy and Caroline Paton are two of our dearest friends and recorded Rick on Folk Legacy Records four years ago.

Paul Mills has been a friend of Rick's for many years and was the late Stan Rogers' producer. He's one heck of a guitar player as well.

Other Toronto 'Catters we see from time to time, are Michael Miland, Rana, Jeremiah McCaw, Steve Latimer and Black Walnut.

No list of Toronto Mudcatters would be complete without mentioning Tony Burns, computer whiz, song-circle mainstay, woodcarver and all round nice guy.

Actually, I could go on because we've met and made so many good friends from the Mudcat, stick around and you'll find out why.

Naturally I concur with Duckboots little personal geneology thing, but as to the confusion part - that will probably never go away. Every day I find something confusing here. That's part of the charm.

Bugsy, from one who spent a few weeks "on the outside looking in", and being totally confused, before taking a hesitant step inside...I highly reccommend it. There's been lots and lots of music, some amazing humour, issues both serious and light-hearted, and the best sense of community I've ever found. I've also found that those with the most outrageous approaches have hearts as big as the moon. There's a lot of "kindness" spoken here when a "catter" finds themself in the soup.

Confused there are you Fuse? Well as Patrick Sky once sang, "Reality is Bad Enough, Why Should I Tell the Truth?"...........But for you, I will.......Of course this is impossible without the mention of the possum....not all possums, just this one in particular. But we'll get to that later..........

First and foremost (now available in the bigger Fivemost size) Mudcat is about Music. To one degree or another we are all folkies....but typically we have different interests or different areas of expertise and knowledge. Sometimes we run a lot of BS threads, which aggravates the more serious scholars and sometimes the more light hearted ones are annoyed at the depth or number of lyrics type threads. Most of the time, there is a nice mix of both and you'll find that most of the active posters appear on all types of threads.

What this place really is is a little village. We are all bound together by our love of Folk Music, regardless of the branch.....and since the very nature of Folk lends itself to, and is indeed much based, on the "Human Experience," those things come up too. Sometimes great friendships are made here through these discussions. We ran a thread on VietNam era songs and Big Mick quite poignantly told of his combat experience and the aftermath of that time. Others did also. So did I. But my tale was of a different sort....I went to jail instead. On the surface of it, you'd think Mick and I would be worlds apart and a bit cool, if not antagonistic. Wrong. We are close and fast friends who have never met, a situation that's about to be rectified.

Last weekend, Karen and I met Rick and Heather Fielding at Niagra Falls and had a great time. All of us had a feeling of old and valued friends, though this was our first meeting in the flesh, so to speak. Actually only Heather got nekkid. Anyway, Rick and I came to the 'Cat about the same time and through a mutual love of the instruments of Folk began to get to know each other. We have a lot in common otherwise too, and at this point in our lives, I think our view of the world, and how it views us is very much the same. I have lots of other wonderful friends here too, but these are a couple of examples.

If you really want to know what this community is like, pick out some names you see a lot and go back and read some of their other postings on older threads. Also read the threads that Kat and others have mentioned. But do another thing too............Kat, another close friend, alluded to my "Near Death" experiences back in May. Type catspaw in the filter box and refresh for 6 months. Start reading. What you will find is a community of loving, caring, and humane people who band together for a friend at a time of crisis. Importantly, this is a "friend" that NONE of them had ever met!!! What they did for my family and I, the support, love, prayers, kindness, and friendship will never be forgotten by me...but even more importantly, they saw themselves too and each 'Catter was touched by what he saw of the group. In many cases, the closeness and bonding that occurred then will last a lifetime for all of us.

We recently had a very unpleasant experience that was a multi-part mess, with several story lines running through it. We survived. We survived because this is a group that loves and cares and we're willing to work our way out of hard times (come again no more). One of the post massacree survival mechanisms was a brilliant thread started by another good friend I've never met, Leej (Lonesome EJ), called the "Mudcat Tavern." It allowed fun, song, bad jokes, and jello to be a part of us again and now has taken on a life of it's own. Hell, I even got sick on that brew Leej served me last night.

I'll close this "epic" now. You will pick up soon enough on who's who....just join in any where you'd like. I'll tell you about the Possum in a different thread. Let me close here with something Sandy Paton once said. As you probably know, Sandy and Caroline are somewhat legendary in Folk and own Folk-Legacy records....they are also kind of Mom and Dad around here....we'll say that Art Thieme, a wonderful folkie and musician in every sense of the words (with a penchant for bad jokes and worse puns), well, I guess Art is like a crazy Uncle, the very best kind. Anyway, Sandy once said that he always wanted to live somewhere like this. It may be a cyber village, but now he does. So do I. And I'm proud and honored to be a small part of this place and share my pittance with the likes of Sandy and Caroline Paton or Art Thieme..........or Rick, Boots, Kat, Mick, General Banj, Leej, the Big RiB, Father Joebro (Joe Offer), Dan Milner, bbc, Duane, David, Seed, Jeri, Barbara Blessings, Bill D., Ferrara, El Swanno, PJ, bet, alison (the fair one), Peter T, annap, EZR, Vixen, Margarita, Bert, Susan, karenk, Cara, Helen, Animaterra, harpgirl, Alice, Fadac, dw, Zim, Charlie Baum, Bill Sables, MAG, Frank, the Pirts, Mario, Allen, Steve, Doug, mcmoo, and on and on.........and YOU. Thanks to Max, Dick and Susan, we have one of the best villages here one could ever imagine. Welcome back and welcome home.

Dear Bev,

I second everything Catspaw said, but will go on to lay claim to his abbreviated Mudcat nickname of 'Spaw. Now, I am thinking I should have made it C'spaw, ala CSPAN on tv! Guess we still could. I really didn't mean to rob him of any cherished identity, 'course, no matter what he calls himself, we'd always know him by his postings!

So, once I shortened his name to 'Spaw, then Bert decided to call me 'ghing, instead of katlaughing, and, now, you are the recipient of such abbreviations, 'Fused.

If this is about as clear as mud, well....we are Mudcatters!**BIG GRIN**

Welcome and join in!

Thanks and glad you agree........but I dunno' how I managed to omit (along with the wonderful Barry Finn, Owl, WW, and others) the saying that sums it up:

"Mud is Thicker than Water"

and Fused.........."Moggy" isn't a term that gets used much in the States, so I found it an appropriate name for one of our cats, a Cornish Rex. Considering their wacky appearance he was lucky to escape with "Moggy"...There was some consideration given to "RatBatCat" which is also an easy answer to people who walk in the door. Most have never seen the breed and their first question is, "What the hell is that?"

And as the last paragraph had nothing to do with your question, you've just witnessed another Mudcat characteristic that happens in all types of threads, known as "Thread Creep"------Sorry.

Welcome to the Mudcat, especially its wholly owned subsidiary, the Neal Young Home for the terminally confused, I'm in the private ward on the left with the sign on the bedhead: "Nil by mouth, especially kazoos". :o)

I have been here for some time, and it is really confusing in the best sense. The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth. My happiest personal moment on the site -- apart from hearing that Catspaw was going to make it -- was a couple of years ago finding an Internet cafe in Borneo (well, a rundown coffee bar with a lunatic computer geek in the back room), and being able to get a long delayed Mudcat fix. Now that was confusing, but great fun!!
You should also know that there are, as in all villages, some stories, amusing feuds, and repartee that go back a comparatively long while for the Internet. The return of the "How To Write A Folk Song " and "How To Write A Blues" are indications of how truly weird people were even before they became truly weirder as now. You could check other threads out!! Joe, Bert, Gene and of course Max, Dick, and Susan are elders (in the young sense) here. There are others, too numerous to name -- check out bbc's resource page!! Oldsters on the porch are particularly fond of "The Great Women's Circle/Tree House" feud that got the guys and gals at each other's throats until dinnertime for a long while. This was when the inimitable Shula spread her considerable wings (and how is she, by the by?). She doused us all with wit and humour for months. There was also the "California Dreaming" controversy (concerning the definition of what music was to be encouraged here). The anarchists among us were rapped on the knuckles by the inimitable Elsie (and how is she, by the by?). There are others of note: the Diana death thread was pretty grim, but more thoughtful than most of the commentary at the time . Others have their favourites. In fact, there was a recent thread about favourites!! We do need to watch the self-referentiality.
As I have said many times, one of the secrets of this place is the continuing elegance of Max's efforts, and that he continues to be interested in doing this. Lots of other people have started sites and let them rot.
yours, Peter T.

Seriously, how IS Shula? Has anyone heard from her lately?

I can't believe I just started peering into this community in May and posting in June. Now, I'm seriously considering a 12-step program! (Like tonight, for instance. I have a column to write, due first thing tomorrow a.m. and what am I doing? Prowling around like a serious mudcat, seeing who's talking about what, stopping to chat about food and music and utter nonsense. I'm telling myself that as I write, I'll get "unstuck" and come up with something brilliant for my column topic...GAWD, I'm self-indulgent.)

I knew I "belonged" when Catspaw gave me s**t about something I'd posted. Teasing is part of the process on many of the threads, so take it in stride. (It's probably one of the reasons so many of us keep coming back. Life is serious, brutal and short out there.)

Bienvenidos!
