Mudcat Tavern - Round 6

It appears to be trivia night......

This has got to win for "which thread has been going on the longest?" (apart from the catspaw ones maybe)

Congratulations on a successful establishment, Lonesome! I think the Mudcat Tavern will have a special place in Mudcat lore. And it's a pleasure to be working with you! Thanks for the lift, alison. You know, boss, when I clicked my heels together, I think I got the last cockroach! Good riddance to that!!! Hey, Roger, good deal on the new truck! Should make you feel a little safer on the roads. And don't worry about those deep thoughts. As long as you keep up deliveries & I wipe the tables & bring drinks, we can let the other guys think & dream. There's a worthy place for us, too.

Well, good morning! Roger was too modest to mention it, but he brought us a great new toy--a plexiglass coffee express machine. It grinds, mixes, & delivers your fresh-brew, expresso, cappacino, latte *AND* tells your fortune, to boot! Step right up & give 'er a try! Some of those fortunes get a little more interesting if you add a few words at the end. Catch my drift? No special pastries today, but I do have some of those frozen waffles in the back, if you're hungry. How can I help you?

Yes...Yes....Yes..........

bbc my dear, set me up with a nice exotic coffee, something with a splash of rum..........It's a great day! The Fair One there beat me to it, but I've been watching the "Tavern" here with hope in my heart and wishing for it's success...........and WHY you ask? Well it is a nice, fun, thread that's helped us get past a recent unpleasantness, but for me, it NOW officially goes even one better. Total postings have now surpassed those on the "Catspaw's About to Belly Up" threads!!! Now don't get me wrong here, no one could be more thankful for the overwhelming support, prayers, and outpouring of love that was shown to me, and indeed showed to most of us what this village and it's citizens can be and often is. A wonderful place..............

But do you have any idea what it's like to be the "subject" of such a......uh,I dunno.....an EVENT? It is a relief not to hold such a dubious record as "most postings on one subject." I will be eternally grateful and thankful to all of you, but bless you all for making the "Tavern" a "happening." Interesting that both threads started as a result of a crisis...........ah, hell, let the sociologists figure it out......

Set'em up for everyone who comes in today on me!!! I feel like a weight has been lifted.........Drink up friends.........

Love the scarf and earrings,Art, are you doing the fortune telling?
BTW, "Jim", that was the chewing gum machine you were filling, the condom machine is over there, looks like you need a coffee, have a dash of Metaxas in it on me.
When Llanfair gets here we'll try to get our tongues round Sospan Fach [ oh, Gawd, have I given Catspaw an opening there?].
Next time Mick lifts his head above the black stuff tell him there are some good socialist songs on the Liberator site, but then he probably knows them all.

I was a jolly sailor and I fell into the sea
And when I reached the bottom the ship was far away
I lost my nerve completely. and by god i'd not be here
if a decent little seahorse hadn't whispered in my ear

Swim out, O' Grad-y you have no time to spare
You're standed on the billow twenty miles from anywhere!
If you don't mind your manners there will be one vacant chair
So swim out, O' Grady, swim out!

As downward I was sinking to old ocean's coral caves
I spied some mermaids winking at me from behind the waves
I made a grab to catch one and a dogfish bit at me
I meant no harm at all, says I. Then "Take my tip", says he

Oh Swim out O'Grady, before I run yer in
For flirting with a mermaid is a very henious sin
As you have no influence, it will surely cost you ten
So swim out, O'Grady, swim out!

I met a whale out walking, he was fat and full of fun
And the two of us got talking about the yarn that Jonah spun
He said he'd never heard it, so I told it to him thin(then)
He smiled and said politely as he waved his other fin

Oh swim out, O'Grady, you take me for a flat?
I've a great big swallow but I'd never swallow that!
Believe me, Mr. Jonah was conversing through his hat

Oh swim out, O'Grady, this is no place for ye!
I'm the first and only bo'sun at the bottom of the sea
Begorra I'm O'Riley and this place belongs to me!

Hey, Bron! Nice to see you! Rumor has it Max is 27. I'm not sure about latte, but I think it's coffee & milk mixed together. Can someone field that question?

Is catspaw hiding around here somewhere? You can come out, spaw. I couldn't stay mad at you. Let's just sit down at a corner table & have a comparative chat about parenting. I'm sure, after enough time, we can see eye-to-eye or at least glass to glass.

Hey, folks, last call for me tonight! Anybody need anything? That new machine sure is fun! LEJ, I guess it helped to limit MM's caffeine intake, although that song was pretty fun! See y'all tomorrow!

OK, a latte is a shot of espresso mixed with steamed milk (no foam). A cappucino is a shot of espresso mixed with steamed milk about 1/3 to 1/2 foam. An Americano is 1 or 2 espresso shots on top of a cup of hot water. Flavorings (amaretto, vanilla, chocolate, hazelnut etc) are often added to caps and lattes.

Yes it's true. I own the world's only combination Radioshack/Coffee bar. I'm not kidding, Catspaw.

BSeed, mocha is chocolate flavored coffee. You can dump some chocolate syrup into a cuppa, or use hot chocolate mix instead of creamer. I'm mildly addicted to iced mocha, with whipped cream on top.

Catspaw, was that a threat? Should I tremble in fear? Should I bring my banjo to the Getaway for self-defense? I can't play it very well, which makes it even more dangerous. Maybe I'll just buy a bodhran - I hear there's no waiting period in NH.

Gee, sorry I didn't do the other 196 verses, but I fell asleep right after the second waffle caffiene sandwich...

Limiting my caffiene usually puts me into a coma - all brain functions shut down...which is dangerous as I only have a 1/27th share of the communal brain cell as it is...

and NOW I find I've forgotten the middle verses to Old Maui....drat! Learn one, forget two...I'd say old age was galloping up on me, except I been this way since I was twelve...

Hey, catspaw, you already heard about my surprise? Harpgirl & moonchild got together & sent us a couple of cases of grade A Florida grapefruit. We can halve them or squeeze 'em for you! Guess you want yours juiced. Comin' right up! Then, you & I are going to sit down & hash out this mothering business. It's either a chat in the corner or a roll in Roger's amaretto latte (and that's an offer I don't make to just anyone!!!). Which'll it be?

LEJ & Jeri, thanks for those detailed coffee definitions. LEJ, how does your Radio Shack coffee machine compare to our new one here? I'd be curious to drop by sometime.

Yes, Roger, you got that order right. Our wrestlers' tastes are becoming rather refined around here. Yeah, I heard about that eclipse; you're ok! And, yes, believe it or not, the machine does Greek, Turkish--you name it! Truly incredible what technology will do for you these days!

OH, MM, I'm sorry! I didn't realize you had a medical challenge! In future, we'll keep that caffeine coming. We want that 1/27th fully functional!

Cold caffiene, hot caffiene, solid or fluid, with or without carbonation. Caffiene, it's a food group!

now, what WAS that parting song I wanted to learn? *mumble*

Silently, silently, see the leaves falling
Overhead as they fly, hear the geese calling
Summer is past, and the warmth ebbs away
As light leaves the sky, at the end of the day

Remember the days when the sun shone so brightly
Merry the songs, and the dancers stepp'd lightly
Laughter rang out, always fresh, always new
And each way we'd glance there were comrades so true

Silently Silently, see the leaves falling
High overhead, now hear the geese calling
The circle must turn, we must all travel on
Night it must come before we greet the dawn

Old friends and new friends, we gather this evening
To say our farewells for we soon shall be leaving
Raise up a toast as we all bid "Adieu"
For when we next meet, then shall warmth rise anew

Gently and Quietly, let the leaves fall now
Plaintive and distant, the wild geese call now
Winter must come, but so shall the spring
With the warmth and the joy that true friendship brings.

Bbc, you probably ought to take it easy on 'Spaw - I don't think he can take any more physical exertion, frail and dainty flower that he is. Even the coffee's beating him up now.

Folks, I didn't mean to imply bodhrans were inherently evil. "Bodhrans don't kill sessions, people kill sessions." In the hands of the skilled, like our own Barry Finn, they are magnificent, and serve to keep the peace as well as - BAM - kick the music up a notch. In untrained and irresponsible hands such as mine, they are havok-wreaking implements of destruction.

I like the tune, it's got a kind of sing-song quality, as if you're sitting on a front porch swing or in a rocking chair, gazing out at the end of summer and feeling sad and hopeful at the same time.

Lordy, lordy, I have been gone too long. I hardly recognize the place. It's going to take hours to unroll this ball of thread. What's that bottle with the faint blue tint and the nice picture of Queen Victoria ? Oh, yes please, some of that, a mere whisper of vermouth and two of those onions, please. I'm hungy. Now, if there's anything like a quite corner I'll attempt to repair my shattered nerves. Cheers, E.S.

I checked out the pictures taken at your get-together. It appears everyone is having a great time and it would have been fun to be there.

Since the shadows are lengthening out here on the desert cocktail time is drawing near. A nice Vodka Martini without Vermouth on the rocks would fill the bill nicely, thank you.

MMario: if you take 15 minutes to download Mediaring, you can sing it, directly into your computer, and send it to her in an email, whether she has the program or not. See this thread for a link and more. It is a piece of cake to do. Really easy. If you read my last posting on that thread, you will see how easy. The person receiving does NOT have to have the program to receive your singing email!

Just think of it! Mudders everywhere sending their voices to one another, rising up in song and camaraderie!Whoo-Hoo!! YeeeeHaw!

Kat the program looks like it might be fun. I got MMario's tune just fine. I shouldn't have any problems with the actual notes, but time signatures always mess me up.

Too bad there wasn't some sort of internet conference call where we could share tunes & songs real time. I wonder if NetMeeting does that. I've got it on my computer, but I've never used it.

Hi folks,

Missed a few days as I've just had nearly a week living in a field in Cornwall, came back yesterday to avoid all the traffic caused by the total eclipse today, boy do I NEED a drink!

Whoever's doing the bar right now, I'll have some of that nice mead, cornish or moniac castle please; don't bother with the little glass, a pint one will do... Oh, and you can leave the bottle if you would!

Gotta make the best of tonight, probably the last time I'll be around for a couple of weeks as I am off to Ireland tommorrow night, first to Boyle where I hope to go to some big cehli to commemorate the battle of the curlius 400 years ago, as well as the battle on the sunday, then it,s a holiday for a few days, that will be a novelty.

Think I better have another drink, I am sore afraid that after tommorrow, people are going to start trying to force black liquid down my throat, never did like it!

"Oh Danny boyyy! etc. etc. This second bottle seems to have relaxed me so, Boingggg! "Time for bed" said Zebedee.

I'll be back at the tavern when I return, if its still open, meanwhile have a drink on me folks!

Jon

Got a nice dark draft up there, Sam Adams or something? I'm headed into a Dim Sum sampler tomorrow, lots of food, long hours, fun, but exhausting. Say, how was that eclipse? Did anyone step out of the tavern to look?

Well, have to get back and print out some work related stuff.

Say, I'm doing a column on food and music for a newsletter here in Vermont. Anyone got any good food and music stories? Also, anyone mind if I use the Tavern as an exampe of the mixed obsessions with food/drink/music? (I guess I'd best not mention possum obsessions.)

Well, off to the work side of the computer.

And start the second one as soon as you deliver the first.........it has to have time to boil, don't ya know?.........What??..........I have six little girls in the house driving me nuts, just got done with a bonfire and s'mores and me singing and playing the Baby Taylor...........Yes, the little urchins made me sing The *^&%$#@#^&*^&%% Unicorn Song.......Love those girls, but I hate it when they make me sing that damn song.......Huh, Blessings Barbara???........Oh, yeah, the Baby Taylor is fine. My luthier at Elderly, one Scott Gierman, glued her back together for a lousy $24.00 as good as new...............And haven't I had a helluva night and day......Started out last night at The Fenian Pub in Conklin, MI.......Huh????????.......that is the question isn't it?........Where the hell is Conklin, MI???.....Well, you just drive North and west out of Grand Rapids until you see the Grain Elevator and there you are. Three streets, a grain elevator, general store and the Fenians Pub.........Who was playing?.......Sit down folks, but the Black Family came in and wasn't Francis Black in fine voice? And Shay, Martin and Michael as well. Today the five of us paid a call to Elderly Instruments and played about every instrument in the joint. Fiddles, Lowdens, Octave Mandolins, bodhrans, low whistles......and the lads bought about 15 CD's.............I gotta tell ya, these are fine people, and what talent..........Hey Dan Milner, they are headed your way. They are at The Ark tonight, then to Virgina, then Long Island. Where, oh where is our James Connolly?
Where, oh where is that gallant man?
He's gone to organize the Union,
That working men, they might yet be free.

Then who, oh who, will lead the van
Then who, then who, will lead the van?
Who, but our James Connolly,
The hero of the working man

Who will carry high the burning flag?
Who will carry high the burning flag?
Who but our James Connolly
Will carry high the burning flag.

Oh they carried him, up to the jail
Oh they carried him up to the jail
And they shot him down on a bright May morning
And quickly laid him in his gore

He's the guy that did the movie about GM shutting down the plant in Flint Michigan that put thousands out of work. He specializes in confronting the management of mega corporations with the actual impact of their "profit maximization" schemes. Very much a Union Man.

Anyhow, try this one.

Storming Heaven

Jacob (A) El-(G)der (D) is my (A) name

My kin and I (G) we (D)farmed the (A) land

Gray-suited man from American Coal
He comes down here on the Richmond Train
He's got a deed for the mineral rights

Took my wife and our baby son
Leaving all we had behind
But the Coal folks weren't unkind
I got this job working in the mine

You hear the (E) cryin'

No more deliveries till Monday so I've brought a double load.
Baps means rice eh? In parts of Wales and W.Midlands it means a round bread roll (like a hamburger bun in shape), otherwise called barm cakes in the North West (Coronation St country) and cobs in other parts of the Midlands ....[this thread is creeping in seriously silly directions, Roger, drink your coffee & get on with the deliveries]

We did acquire another Beatnik for Round 6. Let's have a big round of applause for Mr Lawrence Ferlinghetti, as he performs the introduction to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales .

" Whan that Aprill with his shoures sote
The droghte of Marche hath perced to the rote..."

Actually, we've got so many Beats now there's no room in their booth, and they keep dragging additional tables and chairs over there. This is creeping out some of the patrons, since they are invisible to everyone but me, Neil, and possibly Art. Maybe we can add a small adjoining room for them when we get to Round 7.
