Just wondered if anyone is familiar with a song titled "On the Road to Brighton" (prior to 1862). I'm looking for the melody.

The song refers to Brighton, Pennsylvania, U.S. and was an vaudeville song about a horse-race - the tune came with it and in England was re-written to become 'Blaydon Races' - but don't tell Newcastle!

I'll get me coat.

Just wind them up down South as well - it was a similar borrowing to The Anheuser Busch - which became The Old Bull and Bush.

OK, OK, I'm gone

True- always listed as the tune for the Blaydon Races however, have not been able to get hold of an authentic version. It is in the database called
American Broadsides and Ephemera
unfortunately none of my local libraries subscribe
Anyone got it- if so a scan would be greatly appreciated

send it to cbladey@verizon.net

So far no one has come up with the notation from an old source on the american end.

here is the song

Trouble is that On the Road as in here:
Is not the tune from blaydon races
http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/banjo-eclipse/banjo-eclipse%20-%200040.htm

on the road to brighton other

Ridley cites for Blaydon Races the one word " Brighton " not the full sentence.....

Even more fun

Air- "rip up, Skittie me Jig"

fits blaydon races very well and about exactly the right date too
