BS: Where are my reading glasses?

10 May 10 - 07:33 PM (#2904136)
Subject: BS: Where are my reading glasses?
From: Nick E

I started needing reading glasses about 2 years ago. In that time I have lost more than 6 pairs, a job and my sanity.

Has anyone seen my glasses?

One pair on a plane coming home from Shanghai
One pair in an Idian restaurant in Fen country
..... but most times they're on my head :)

One of the signs of a failing intellect, I suppose, is to find oneself patting one's face to see if, just possibly, one already has the glasses on. Not that I have ever done that. :)

I usually sit on mine and break them. But I get them from the Dollar store so it isn't too big a deal.

I remember when I was a kid watching an older brother take off his glasses and set them beside him on the bench where he was cleaning up. He then walked over and got a boiling hot kettle of water, poured it into the basin - and plunked the kettle squarely on the glasses.

It gave me (silent) giggles the rest of the day.

One by the computer, one on the kitchen table, one in the car, one on the bedside table. And a couple lost in the garden (I think). They are drugstore specials.

Queen Liliokalani wrote a cute song about an ?aunt (I've forgotten) who asked- where are my glasses? and they were sitting above her forehead.
I've got it on a cd somewhere. I wish I had a translation that I could post.

I don't know, Nick, but if you find 'em, see if mine are anywhere close by.

Unfortunately, my eyes are enough different that I have to wear prescription cheaters, so I can't use the cheap ones from the grocery store...but I still manage to sit on them once in a while. To protect from that, I have about a dozen hard-shell cases (a buck each at the dollar store) scattered all over the house - but I still can't find one when it is time to put the glasses away!

Sometimes, I've looked and looked for my glasses - and found them on my nose....

Your reading glasses are next to your car keys that you can't find.

Mine crawl under things. Often, it's what I was last using them to read. So, what were you reading last time you had them on?

And both of them are probably next to the iPod nano that is here somewhere.

I have found out how to enlarge the font on mudcat forum so even if i can't find my spec-a-ta-cles i can still read it!
I don't remember how i did it, but it has really helped.

I also keep straps, or eyeglass keepers on glasses and sunglasses,
so i can wear them around my neck if not usingthem.

One brand is Croakies, http://www.croakies.com/
another is Chums--http://www.chums.com/

http://www.thereareplaces.com/infgdes/traveltips/glscrd.htm

there are often glasses "keepers" in grocery stores,
and the chains and beaded ones may look dorky, but
not half as dorky as you will look when squinting
and straining to see.

many are made from neoprene...like skin diving suits..

Yeh op, mine live on an unattractive but very utilitarian cord around my neck.

Back before I lost my trifocals and my vision insurance, I really liked the croakies for gardening and outdoor stuff like hiking and kayaking as they kept the glasses on my face, but I find them too short for all the taking off and putting on required by the drugstore glasses. The beaded cords are too long and get tangled up in the handles of shovels and garden forks too readily. The braided nylon cords are a more utilitarian length for folks like me who ought to be wearing multifocal lenses, but don't.

At a concert on the weekend, I asked a squinting friend where her glasses were (joke - she normally has around 10 pairs of supermarket glasses, kept in every handbag & on on every surface in her place!)

she confessed she now needs prescription glasses & never takes them outside her door!

I came home from high school one day to find my younger sibs in an uproar, turning out every drawer, upturing every sofa and chair cushion, checking pockets, looking for Daddy's glasses and hoping to be the one to win the $5 he offered for their return.

I pointed out to my dad that the glasses were sitting on his forehead. Did I win the $5? No.

My "reading glasses" are really my all-around survival glasses; I'm at least 20/100 without them, I forget what exactly, but fortunately correctable to 20/20. If I happen to put them down in a non-standard place while I'm distracted, finding them can be a real adventure.

Open Mike suggested enlarging your browser font if you lose your glasses. The keyboard shortcut for that on many browsers is [CTRL + ] (that's "control" and a "plus" sign, "minus" for smaller fonts).

Where are my [xxxxx] glasses?

This phenom confirmed an old theory of mine, here at our place, just last week:

The reason dear Mim had a doxen pairs of cheaters of various strengths lying around on every horizontal surface was...

so she could always count on having a pair handy to put on...

so she could find the pair she REALLY wanted.

The 'hang them round your neck' cords are quite handy, even if ypu don't hang them round your neck. Easier to see a red cord than a pair of transparent specs

I once had a bumper sticker that read, "Where am I?
                                        Where's my car?"

I've reached the stage where I have to take my prescription glasses off to read/do close work... then I bumble around the house until I remember where I put them.

It gets like an episode of Scooby Doo sometimes ~ "My gleasses, my gleasses, I cyen't find my gleasses!"

I wear contacts -- RGPs (and I really like them and see no reason to change) -- so they only correct my distance vision, so I've got readers on my head, in my purse, in the car, in every room of the house. At work, because of computer and paperwork, I trained myself to perch them on the tip of my nose, so I'm constantly explaining to customers (I'm an optical technician) that that's NOT the proper way to wear glasses.

If I don't have my contacts in, I can see to read and use the computer just fine -- so my backup glasses (which I almost never wear) are single vision.

Jeri usually borrows my readers when we're together although she triumphantly showed me a great pair she had with her...once. ;-)

I hate to pay more than four bucks a pair -- Goodwill usually has brand new ones, Big Lots, Dollar Store, etcet etcet.

I only need magnifiers. I have a teensy astigmatism that doesn't require glasses, but my eyes are aging.

I perch them on my head around the house. I frequently get confused when I lower them over my eyes and find they're sunglasses, not reading glasses. The obverse is true--can't drive with reading glasses on. I can read most thing without them though. The computer screen is fine and most books, although it's tiring. I can do prescription bottles on a good day--at least part of the text on them.

Then there are the beading glasses, which are 3.5s or the highest I can get. I waited until my lenses hardened and my close visions went to hell to take up something requiring threading seed beads on a needle. This is roughly equivalent to taking a gnat's rectal temperature several hundred times a project.

If they aren't on my head, the glasses live where I use them. Beading ones are with the bead stuff, reading glasses are with my current book, in my car or purse or with my beading glasses. In a pinch and in the right circumstances, they're on Linn's head.

Hee hee, I am reminded of a comment on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, about how people in old folks homes are getting high - Hey Martha, I've got the munchies - Where are my teeth?

My work repairing eyeglass frames or beading requires "industrial strength" reading glasses -- +3.50s. A switch from my day-to-day 1.75s or 2.00s. (Doc's gotta back off my distance Rx so I can see better close up.)

"Hey Martha, I've got the munchies - Where are my teeth?"

Many years ago, my father asked approximately that question...his upper plate was a bit uncomfortable, so he often took it out. So...one day he couldn't find them. HE looked high & low...WE looked low & high. Nothing.....several days went by, and there were thoughts of taking furniture apart.

Then, someone made tea for iced tea, and opened the freezer compartment of the fridge....there were the teeth, in the ice cube tray.
The jokes about how he did THAT kept us busy for awhile....

It's when you get to the stage your eyes have changed so you don't need reading glasses the problem really tends to arise, because you take your ordinary glasses off to read and put them down on a sofa or somewhere equally inappropriate.

A Basic Life Rule is always have two pairs of glasses so you can wear the other one to enable you find the one you've misplaced.

I keep a set of cheap readers in each of my various workbaskets to slip on over my everyday scrip, to augment the close views. They're just part of the toolkit for each craft.
