Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on ....

Subject: RE: Getaway News --- Please .. whats on ....

Is it too soon to ask???? Chance and Suzette are too far south to offer their annual do. Is anything else planned?
Workshops?
Sleeping arrangements?
Menu?

I am really looking forward to this. And Micca is definitely in with maybe some extra time for visiting.

i am saving comp time so I will have enough in October for a very long weekend.

WHOO WHOO

Nancy???
Get to work.

"Sleeping arrangements?"

You wasted time SLEEPING?

Already looking forward, myself. It will be wonderful to see you, Mary (maybe even in Maine, too) -- and Bruce of course, who is right about sleeping.

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise.
So I go to bed at 4AM and get up at 6AM and stagger around for a few days.

The local suckers organizers & planners who do the Getaway seldom think 'much' about it until after our 2 day festival at Glen Echo park the 1st weekend in June. We are in the last stages of planning that.) (If you can be in the DC area then, it is really a great place)

(When the Getaway was really 92.418% local, we often didn't get really into gear until August...and a lot of the planning still doesn't happen until then.)

I'm sure Nancy will pop on with what she knows... (no doubt some ideas have been tossed about about guests who might be available.)

Well, don't go hounding me for potatoes just because I come from Idaho. Or sheep either, for that matter.

As far as I can tell right now, barring strikes, earthquakes, medical problems and other things over which I have almost no control, I'll be there.

Yes, I can bring a rapier...but a dagger would be more convenient.

(My wife is making me go. Really. She told me to.)

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on ....
From: Nancy King

Well, the bottom line is, yes, it's too soon to ask. As Bill pointed out, a lot of FSGW folks have to get through the Festival before they can even begin to thnk about planning the Getaway.

That said, rest assured the the planning HAS begun. We are in the process of lining up our official invited guests (not as simple a task as it might seem, since we can't pay them anything), and have so far confirmed Debby McClatchy, Caroline Paton, Linnea Palmer Paton, and Molly Andrews. More are pending. In a few weeks we'll be asking for workshop suggestions, so get your thinking caps on.

Rapaire, I'm delighted to hear you'll be joining us this year! And it sounds as if we'll have a lot of other fine folks returning. Please do, in fact, let us know if you intend to come -- it helps with the planning.

Menus? You gotta be kidding, Mary! We have NOTHING to do with that, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view.

Sleeping arrangements? What exactly is it that you want to know? I expect the arrangements will be pretty much as they have been in the past, but Jennifer can't even begin to think about that until all the registrations are in, etc.

Speaking of registrations, a few decisions have yet to be made before we can put the registration form on line, and those decisions won't be made until July, in all likelihood. So cool yer jets, folks, and relax in the certain knowledge that it will be totally fabulous, as usual.

Looking forward to seeing you all in October!

Nancy

Should I bring a sleeping bag? Are there showers with hot water? Indoor plumbing? Toilet paper? Private bedrooms with valet service? What is the usual tip of the concierge? Will there be an adequate stock of various potables? Do I have to sew name tags in all of my clothes?

"Will there be an adequate stock of various potables?"

When I was in Wichita, I sometimes ate at the 3rd Pizza Hut ever opened...before a standard 'look'. They rented space in a ex-restaurant space on the 2nd floor of a building near the university. One night, a friend brought in a bottle of red wine (they didn't even serve beer!) and set it on the table.
Soon a BIG waiter came stalking over, looked sternly at the fellow and announced..."You're not allowed to have that in here!..so will you please keep it under the table?"

This is a Methodist camp... the rules will be explianed...

Rap -- Mary has answered your questions accurately, if over-succinctly.

If transporting a sleeping bag is a problem, as it often is for folks coming from a long way off, let us know closer to the date and we'll be sure someone brings extra bedding you can use.

On the matter of "potables," please check out this thread, in which things on this topic are spelled out pretty well.

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on ....
From: Genie

"Potables," of course, includes fruit juice, coffee, tea, water, soda, milk -- you know, the kind of beverages most folkies usually consume.

Rap, Rapaire - the outhouses are heated and usually have a full supply of Sears catalogues on the floor too. You may be expected to slip the valets (Big Mick, Bobert, Amos, Bruce, etc.) a little sump'n (like a potable or a special favor) but it's not a law. And you don't have to sew name tags in your clothes unless you plan to shed them in places other than your bunk room. (Maybe during the floozy dance at Bobert's Blues Band?)

Subject: RE: Getaway 2010 News --- Please .. whats on ....
From: Amos

Encouraging him in such matters is ill-advised, Genie. A tall beefy man well past middle age, Rapaire is not something to see shedding his garments.

On the other hand, maybe he and Lonesome can partner up and bring about a dual-moon system (or if the weather gets chilly, a Blue Moon event).

Don, last year's full fare (event; lodgings for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights; breakfast Saturday, Sunday and Monday; lunch and dinner Saturday and Sunday) cost $193, a very reasonable price it seems to me.

The Getaway page mentions that scholarships are available -- at least they were last year; the site hasn't been updated for this year yet -- and I know that other ways to save a few bucks (for example, committing to an upper bunk) were also listed on the registration form, which of course isn't up yet for this year.

Hope I'm not speaking too hastily...

NEWS ! NEWS ! NEWS! Regarding this years pre Getaway party ..
Some of you might remember Sandra and Gene (Adelphi Records)--that's us.. at the end of the Getaway last year proposing (threatening!) a seriously wonderful 2010 pre-event hoodoo at our newly renovated digs. {We live less than a mile away from Suzette and Chance's previous place.}

Here's Gene with the lowdown..
The party itself will start at the standard 7:30 ish PM. However the event will begin at around noon of the same day. We're calling it the "Great Maryland Hoodoo Crab and Music Bash".
There will be two instructional workshops: a beginners and an intermediate level regarding the does and donts, the hows, wherefores and whyfores concerning the art of cooking, opening, shelling and of course eating of the various parts of the world renown maryland blue crab.( By the way early arrivals get to meet them live before they get to eat them.)
We're also planning on providing crash space for at least several persons or couples. Sleeping is obviously optional as are PJs :-)
More on this as we get closer to the Getaway date.
Those who need a place to crash please contact us by e-mail personally-- slkoppel@yahoo.com
Priority to overseas visitors first..west coast, hawaii and alaska count as overseas.

Best from
Sandra and Gene-- stay tuned.

Sorry, KT... I musta been smoked up when I wrote "No need for weed"... Of course, there's always need for weed and seein' as "Amops" lives in Potafornia I just figured he take a duffle bag into his corner weed shop and tell the folks there to "Fill 'er up!!!" and bring it with him...

BTW, we're still lookin' fir a "chick" singer for BobertsBluesBand and, unlike the other ladies in the band, the chick singer don't necessarially have to have a big bottom... Of course. we do add a few points to the application if she does but it isn't a strict requirment...

The church people haven't read all this yet, or else we'd have heard from them, but I've gotten word from unnamed sources that the CIA has taken an interest from tapping somebody's weak cheap cell phone, and the reaction around headquarters went something like this:

"What! You say that these people are funneling money into the protesting Methodista rebels?"

"It appears so, sir."

"Appears so? Just what ARE these people protesting?"

"Ants, sir. They're said to protest ants. There was a lot of static, sir..."

"Nonsense! You must mean Anty-War. An Anty-War would be downright insecticidal! We Must stop them. We'll fly a chopper overhead and send a couple of our people in to investigate. And be on the lookout for roaches. Where there are ants, there usually roaches, so we can convict them on that. Watch out for these folks. They're very methodical, to say the least..."

"Yes, sir! We'll get on it right away. I know some people in the World Folk Music Association that can lend us some clothes."

....There it is, folks!, Try and sing over the chopper noise, and if you see a couple with a buzz cut and a beehive with matching his and hers New Christy Minstrels T-shirts , wearing wing tips and pumps respectively with their shorts, at least make sure you charge them the admission. And be careful with any roaches....

Anyone who attended my "Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot" medley of his entire song catalog will be interested to hear that I will again attempt this monumental salute on Saturday of the Getaway. Last year's effort was plagued by technical difficulties, including a broken b string, a swarm of pelicans, and an offshore breeze which blew the lyrics for Old Dan's Records into Chesapeake Bay. I had also failed to allow for the full 7 1/2 hours required for completion, and though I soldiered on after it was too dark to see the music sheets, I must apologize to those who pointed out to me that If You Could Read my Mind does not contain a line comparing the doomed relationship to a disabled rowboat anchored in the Niagara River 50 feet from the Falls.
So pack a lunch, bring your laptop or something to read, and we'll meet under the gazebo just north of Worship Isolation Tent.

Jed mentioned the war ship that England sold to the Confederacy. It was the CS Shenandoah and it worked mainly in Alaskan waters trying to wipe out the Yankee whaling fleet. When I tried to find a song about it there were none, so I wrote one that turned out pretty decent.   A Civil War song workshop would be one of many that I will look forward to.

With Jed Marum joining us and Jerry Rasmussen and his bride, I'm certainly looking forward to this getaway. For Susette and I it's the first time the Getaway will actually be 'away'.

It will be good to see Alaska Mike again, the 'barefoot' folksinger. I'm sure meeting Repaire will be an experience. MMario may surprise us with his presence, I understand, as well. Leadfingers Terry is on the bill also. The Getaway must have something with folks willing to come a long way, time after time.

I missed the Gordon Lightfoot extravaganza last year, EJ, so please let me know when you're doing that, I want to be there.

Hello to all from Hanlon Mt. see you at the getaway.

Jed, I listened to your song and liked it very much. Mine is called Shenandoah Roll on Home. It tells a bit more of the story including more about the ship's exploits in Alaska. It will be great to meet you finally and share some songs and stories.

Thanks to the intrepid Ernie Johnson, who coined the chorus and impetus, we now have a song for GEtaway 2010. The tune is a raggy oldtimey sorta thang.

CHO: Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I'm going to the Getaway.
Out where the lonesome seagull cries, on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay
All the folks stay up all night,
Making music 'til the rooster cries,
Lord willing and the creek don't rise,
I'm going to the Getaway.

I've gone to work most every day
The whole dang year it seems
Trying to forget the singing sounds
That show up in my dreams
I've been through bitter winter months
And hellish summer days
And now by God, I've had enough,
I'm going to the Getaway

CHO

I long to see a country road
That leads up the shore
With folkies wandering 'cross the fields,
Two hundred souls or more.
I hunger for the songs they sing
And the funny things they say,
So mister, stamp my ticket quick,
I'm going to the Getaway!

CHO

I want to hear old Bobert shout
The blues when they're done right.
And watch Big Mick put the Irish out
When he gets a little tight
I want to hear sweet Liz LaPrelle
Hold the whole place in her sway.
By God I'm done with the working life,
I am going to the Getaway.

CHO

When I get there I'll drink all night,
And sing a thousand tunes
And if I watch the windows right,
Catch sight of Ernie's moon!
I'll listen to the cowboy songs
While the ladies dance and play.
Be still my heart, I'm off to start
And I'm going to the Getaway!

(CHO, turnaround repeat on last two lines)

I'll look into the airline thing, but if anyone else is flying in Thursday or Friday and wants to carpool from the airport, please let me know.

If I can make it, I want to swing by Raleigh, NC, either on the way out or the way back. DK if anyone is driving to or from that area, but it would be great to carpool if that's an option.

OTOH, if'n there ain't gonna be no Bobert's Blues Band extravaganza, Getaway jes' won't seem the same. (Maybe we can do that there Bobert's Bad Band thing?)

Genie,

I'm driving both ways and am glad to offer a ride both ways. The return trip on Monday would pose no problems. Friday, however, I am leaving early afternoon from work, which is in Roxboro. Roxboro is up near the VA/NC border and about 45-60 minutes west of I-85, too far out of the way for me to pick you up in Raleigh or at RDU. Roxboro is also 45-50 minutes north-northeast of where I live.   If you would like to spend the night with me on Thursday, ride to Roxboro with me, and take the car to putz around until noon on Friday, you would be more than welcome to do so. I should tell you that Roxboro is a poor, rural milltown and there are not a ton of ways to amuse yourself for 4 hours.

They do have a library!

The return trip would not be a problem, since I will be headed for home and not to Roxboro.

The Sandrolin pre-Getaway Crab- and Music-Fest sounds like a real happening, and I'd love to be there for that. The good news is that I was able to get a RT ticket for only a few $ using my Southwest Rapid Rewards points - and that SWA lets you change your itinerary as often as you like w/o a fee, as long as they have availability for those tickets on the days you want.
The bad news is that if I were to fly into BWI any time that week, I'd probably end up arriving at about 11:30 PM. They don't seem to have any flights from PDX that would get there earlier. So if I could arrive Wed. night, to be there for the bash at Sandrolin's, I'd have to figure out how to get to Silver Spring and where to stay Wed. night (unless they let ya sleep at the airport).

Right now I'm booked to fly into NC and plan to ride up from there, which is cool. I just wish there was a way to be in two places at the same time.

Anyways I'm really looking forward to seeing the Getawat 'old timers' and meeting some of you 'Catters who weren't there in 2008. I might even have to buy a floozie dress fer Bobert's Blues hoedown. (Or is that "ho down?")

A reminder about the silent auction.

Funds raised through the silent auction are used to provide scholarships to the Getaway. Many of us have had years when it was the scholarships that made it possible for us to attend.

So....bring something to put in the auction, don't forget to check out the auction, and bid early and often on items you might like to take home!

The lay-out at West River means there is no longer an optimal location for the auction, where people can browse without climbing over top of people in the area for other reasons, or without intruding on a workshop being held in the same space. Because of the lack of a PA system in the cafeteria, it is also hard to make general announcements and reminders, including a reminder about when the auction will close so people can make final bids, (and reminders to come and pay and get what you won before leaving.) One result is there has been a big drop-off in the funds raised by the auction since moving to West River.

I'd love to see that change this year!

Janie

Aw, Dan, Getaway will be noticeably less bright without Kiran there!   (Not to disparage you and Geeta, but I'm sure you're used to being upstaged by him by now.)

Janie, I've got some things to bring for the auction. (Fortunately, Southwest still allows 2 checked bags and your two basic carry-ons with no extra charge.)

But are you saying there's no sound system for the concert or do you just mean no P A for mealtime announcements?   (I can easily bring a very small battery-powered amp and mic for announcements if that will help.)

There hasn't been a PA for the cafeteria, which is the only place people are centrally gathered except for the Saturday night concert. Before you bring anything, though, check with Charlie Baum. They may have plans for that this year.

I also have some extra sleeping bags. We seemed to accumulate a new one each year my son went to camp. Who needs one? PM me or write Swallowtailjig   at   yahoo and I'll bring you one.

I can offer overnight accomodations for a few 'catters on WEDNESDAY night (not Thursday) but not transportation to the events as I won't have the seats in my car. I live near the Silver Spring MD Metro (Red Line).

Hope this is helpful to somebody. I'm practicin' my floozie stuff now.

It's really amazing to think about--all over the nation and oher nations people are undergoing huge inconvenience, aches and pains of toting bags and travel, to converge on this little leafy glen in the backwaters of Maryland to spend three days eating so-so food and sleep in hard racks...for the pleasure of hearing each other sing. Now that is really somp'n, I am here to say!!

Put we picked 'em where we larned 'em,
And for that Getaway
I would foller Morse on a sway-back horse
To hell, come any day!

Up in the Ottawa Valley, the plan is complete. Laundry is churning even as I type, so we'll have something to wear when we get there, and the dreaded List (stuff not to forget) is under construction.

Cute as it is, the new car is smaller than the (much missed) indigo-blue station wagon, so the stowage geometry of instruments, bedding and baggage has yet to be worked out.

We leave after work on Thursday, flop for the night somewhere near Syracuse NY, and arrive on Friday.

I put it out with a box of baggies, in the scholarship sale area- people take what they want, and donate what they want.

Should I get you a 20 kg box of your very own??

Maybe I can sing Last Chance For Salvation, Genie:

"There's a sign in the courtyard in front of the church
Last Chance For Salvation, Service today
There's a sing in the bar says Cold Miller on Tap
Where the dreams of a lifetime go drifting away

Some turn to Jesus, some turn to the bottle
Some find redemption, some find nothing at all
Some wait a lifetime for a prayer to be answered
Some climb marble stairways, some sleep in the hall

The angels in Heaven wear beautiful robes
With voices as sweet as an innocent child
he Honky Tonk angels, their voices are rough
But they offer their comforts, if just for awhile

And on it goes...

One of my songs

If sinners aren't allowed in the workshop, I'll have to wait outside the door.

ok. I'm excited.

After hearing about the Getaway for decades, I'm going to my first one. Woot! I have such great memories of the folks from the DC area from when Folk Annoyance..er.. Alliance was there. That was one of the few times at Folk Alliance when traditional singers got a decent space and drew fantastic people to sing together - making it about folk music rather than the "industry" I'd met 'em before, but that event alone made me love Judy & Dennis Cook. I'm looking forward to putting faces and voices to some of the names I've read here. I figure being new, YOU are more likely to figure out who *I* am than viceyversy, so please do introduce yourself to the wide woman from Cleveland who will usually be seen with a mug of tea in hand.

I'm a bit nervous, too... will my throat cooperate? Will my fingers behave? Will I forget lyrics I've known for 25 years the way I do at an open mic? It'll be an adventure, anyhow, and a chance to see beloved friends like Caroline, Sally Rogers, the Cooks, and a chance to meet new people who may be my next decade's beloved voices.

Joanne in Cleveland who is packing all the weird instruments JUST in case...

Art -- you bet it is! (I'll try to arrive early enough to get some...)

Jerry -- Sinners are allowed in ALL workshops. Otherwise, none of us could go to any of them.

PLEASE NOTE that we will be asking folks to sign up for specific tasks this year. Many long years ago, when we did our own cooking (no longer possible), each camper was required to sign up for two hours of (mostly kitchen) work. We no longer need that level of commitment, BUT in order to avoid the problem of the same people doing everything, AND to make sure the necessary tasks are accomplished, we will ask everyone who doesn't already have to a job (auction ladies, you already have jobs -- thanks!) to sign up to do a specific chore at a specific time. Many of these jobs won't even take a whole hour to complete, but they ARE important! Stuff like making sure the snack-and-drink table in the Retreat Center is stocked and clean, helping to set up/clean up after the midnight snacks, manning the registration table -- stuff like that.

Sounds like we'll have a lot of new folks this year, in addition to a whole bunch of old friends. Hooray!

Oh my... I can see our 'success' at attracting people from all over the country and the world to the Getaway has created some awkward situations as new folks decide to 'try it'.
A few years ago, when we had just a few who drove in from 'up North' it was relatively easy...and when we had 2 vans full of English chantey singers, we knew about it months in advance and organized lots of locals to provide both housing and bedding...etc.
The problem is, many 'locals' never look at Mudcat, and have to be called or the requests printed in the previous months newsletter. I have picked up folks from 2 different airports in the past...especially when BWI was right on my way.
This year, I have logistics problems that prevent me from personally collecting folks.
I WILL ask about and see if I can locate a ride for Clare P. in Chevy Chase, but it's short notice.

We need to work out a 'system'....*wry smile* I really hate for a prospective good time for folks become a tedious adventure in just getting there.

Important to keep in mind... this is not a Mudcat event....Mudcat is just one way folks hear about it.

**Hello all you locals who occasionally read Mudcat!** Can anyone help either Clare in Chevy Chase OR go by BWI on Friday eve.?

I'm not sure I'll be awake but I'll be there. About 70 of her poems have so far been adapted for singing and recorded, and there are about 570 more poems to consider. The workshop will be a demonstration of how different singers have approached her poems. Please send me a PM if you're interested in leading a particular poem as a song.

For your drop o' beer an' bacca,
----F----------------------C-----------------Dm---------------F
To earn your bloomin' clobber an' the bit o' tuck you eat,
----------------C--------------G/C
When you're layin' on the screw,

Saturday:

Songwriting with Gordon Bok and Jed Marum
Sea Shanties with Paul DiBlasi and Dave Diamond
Pub Sing with Amos Jessop and Mark Ryer
Old Time Songs with Molly Andrews and Debby McClatchy
Challenging Choruses with Bill Day and Claire Norman

Sunday:

Sea Songs of Cicely Fox Smith with Charlie Ipcar
Sally Rogers
Inland Waterways with George Ward
Ballads II with Colleen Cleveland and Wendy Grossman
Parodies with Roger Himler and Micca Patterson

And if some are filled to the brim there are plenty of alternatives.

As I recall we can stay over Sunday night and leave Monday morning although I didn't see that mentioned on the schedule.

Jerry, the potluck goes on from early evening until quite late, because people are continually arriving all evening. New food keeps appearing as people arrive. Note the only means we have of re-heating stuff is a microwave in the Retreat Center. I usually bring my chili in a crockpot.

Charlie, yes, some folks do stay over until Monday, but you're supposed to have registered for that, just so the camp knows how many people they need to feed Sunday night and Monday morning. If you did not register for staying over, and want to, speak to Charlie Baum or Dean Clamons. There are no activities scheduled for Monday other than cleaning up and collecting hugs, but the late-night singing on Sunday night is often very nice.

No Dani? Bummer!

Two weeks ago I did the sound for one of the most interesting concerts in over thirty years with the Mountain Music Concert featuring musicians from Nepal paired with a couple of the local Appalachian Old-Time fiddlers/mando players.

Last week it was Scottish Weekend which used to take the week before the Getaway at Ramblewood, but now goes to Timber Ridge, just west of Winchester, VA.

This week it is the Appalachian Heritage Festival in the Cultural Center of the Known Universe, Shepherdstown WV. The tie-in? Elizabeth LaPrelle who blew up the Getaway away in '01 is now a headliner with two of my favorites, Jay Unger and Molly Mason on Saturday night. I shall pass on the Getaways good wishes, where those who know, heard her at 13.

Have a good time!

Sooooo... I'd ask how things are going but I'd rather think that everyone is just too busy having fun to answer.

"Where, oh where are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?"
I searched the world over and thought I'd found music
But you went to Getaway and pouf!
You was gone!
