Sounds excellent - well done for organising it, because these things don't happen spontaneously.

Is it strictly unaccompanied only, with a ban on any instruments, as is the case apparently at Cork Singers Club

03 Feb 11 - 10:30 AM (#3087878)
Subject: RE: Ballydehob singers club
From: GUEST

At least that's what I heard. Probably no harm as there are other sessions for those who play guitar accomp. as well.

no, you heard wrongly, it is not strictly unaccompanied i play my guitar and concertina and banjo to accompany songs

From: GUEST

I meant that I'd heard that the Cork Singers Club, based in Cork City was unaccompanied.

On a voluntary basis? Well, you must be a one-off, Dick. All the rest of us organisers make a mint out of running folk events!

yes ,Vic, I did not mean to imply other Folk club organisers did not do it on a unpaid basis,I think the length of time you have run your club is admirable as I have said on this forum before.

"ballydeghob"? You betcha! ;>)>

03 Feb 12 - 07:52 AM (#3301418)
Subject: RE: Ballydehob singers club
From: Vic Smith

My dictionary of Irish mythology defines a ballydeghob as "an Irish sprite that has too much to say for itself" - as in:-

"bally" - Scots slang for "too much"
"de" - French for "of"
"ghob" - Common English language for "mouth"

Thus - "Too much of mouth"

03 Feb 12 - 01:28 PM (#3301545)
Subject: RE: Ballydehob singers club
From: The Sandman

In Irish its the meeting place of the two rivers or the mouth of the two rivers.
we have seven festivals, which is six more than lewes, and for our jazz festival we have Camille o Sullivan, who will be on tonight's late late show,so we have quality and quantity.

the two rivers or the mouth of the two rivers

Well, I thought that Ballydehob came from the Irish Béal an Dá Chab which would imply, to me, that a ford or crossing point of a river was involved in the title.

Might not a more accurate translation into English be "mouth of the two river fords"?

03 Feb 12 - 06:47 PM (#3301741)
Subject: RE: Ballydehob singers club
From: The Sandman

Béal Átha dá Chab translates as "the ford mouth of two jaws" derived from the fact that the river which flows into the estuary at Ballydehob divides in two a short distance upstream, and in the days before bridges, both streams had to be forded.

Would love to visit the Ballydehob Singers sometime, but without my own transport and being presently unwaged & living between Bray & Dún Laoghaire, I doubt I'll ever make it any time soon.....pity!

I do attend the Goilín Singers Club in Dublin & Bray Singers Circle (....neither as often as I'd like to, mind)

Anyway, I hope that it's all working out well for ye. I was part of the Wild Bees Nest Project last year, and you can see the results of our efforts on www.thewildbeesnest.ie, or a previous self-composition on youtube just type in Pat de Verse Burke, and I'm there, in all my glory....god help us!
