What Tom Bliss Did Next

This is not really about music (more about sustainability), but a lot of mudcat people asked to see the film when it was finished. So here's a link:

The Urbal Fix

It does feature Bliss Mill, (home of my song Silken Leather), and there's a bit of Waulkin o the Fauld (anyone know why?) and some other tunes by Meenim on the DVD version.

But mostly it's about how I saved the planet single-handed and never even got a big head nor nuffink about it.

Hippies, folkies, fellow radicals and gardeners seem to approve on the whole, as do the academics (they kindly gave me a prize and a distinction and are publishing me in a Proper Academic Journal in the autumn). In fact there's load going on as a result. (Watch this space).

Tom

PS Back to scriptwriting for the moment, but still hand-to-hand fighting with PRS trying to make the folk club tariff work - it's like trying to crochet molasses.

Excellent and inspirational Tom, but as I'm a part-time environmental engineer who spends the much of the rest of his time on the allotment and front & rear veg gardens you are pushing against an open door here!

An interesting thing said near the end of Action B: Many of the things we need to do to address climate change we need to do anyway - this is a message I wish we would hear far more often as I think it bypasses the entrenched views seen in the believer/non-believer camps.

I will watch the additional clips tomorrow, then will be in touch.

Thanks

Now that sir is bleedin wonderful work. Something one could pin a viable movement on. I'll read up the documents at the weekend.

Huzzah. And count us in! We are from a long line of venerable gardeners and allotment champs.

Having just moved to the rural fringes of Sheffield we are working on some of these low impact sustainable ideas as we renovate the house. The main feature we chose the property for was the big garden, and all the things we can do in it (vegetables, chickens and festivals, in no particular order of priority).

Great stuff Tom - I'll share this with my colleagues at work if that is ok - I can see it being inspirational and a very useful resource - I am currently working on the Leeds - Bradford Corridor so it fits in well. We are looking at how we can make better use of the green infrastructure there and how we link people to jobs as sustainably as possible.

Well done with the awards too - glad to see your sojourn from music was not in vain.

Look forward to seeing you t the Topic if not before

Thanks everyone.

Please feel free to circulate the link as widely as possible. I'm talking to some bigwigs, but this sort of thing can't work without a bit of a groundswell.

The short cut is "urbal.tv" - and I've just run off a new batch of DVDs because people are starting to organise showings to local groups and/or work colleagues. Just email me from the site if you want one.

Tom

Should this be in BS now? I don't know how to do that, I'm afraid.

Tom this is brilliant...

The Urbal Institute should set up Facebook and Twitter groups.

That is the way to spread this fantastic idea and get some umph behind it.

Tom

In identifying potential green spaces, don't forget all that space on flat roof buildings which can be used to collect rain water, grow fruit and veg, place bee hives. If enough space is available small groups of free range chickens can even be accommodated.

oops... just saw your bit about the green roof.

I love the green veins concept. It would be great to widen foot paths to accommodate rickshaw like cycle carts for transporting green goods into and compost materials out of urban areas. In fact if the paths had allotments along one or both sides, even better.

Just put it on my Facebook page, Tom...

Tam's right, make a FB page for this, it'll spread around in no time!

Oooer - facebook...

Must I? Oh dear.

I do have a facebook account somewhere in the back of my drawer, which they won't let me delete. I absolutely hated their website - it kept telling me about other people's private business, and I had no idea how much of my own was being broadcast far and wide (I had to have both a private and a public page, it seemed, and couldn't get them to talk to each other, nor make head nor tail of which page I was dealing with at any time). And the music I uploaded played at 33 and 1/3rd, so even my happy songs sounded like Mary Prout.)

Sigh.

Still, perhaps I'd better give it some serious thought.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Tom

It would be a facebook group, Tom and you would have complete control over it.

You post what you want on it. You can provide a wall for member comments. A photo album of good examples of your ideas.   You can set it so people have to request to be members as opposed to having an automatic join button.

Talk to mudcatter Ruth Archer about how the Folk Against Fascism facebook group was set up. Of Max Seigel about the Facebook Mudcat group. simples.

Once it is done, tell us about it here on this thread and create a new thread (BS) dedicated to the Urbal Fix. Ask people to join the facebook page. Set up a twitter page for it too. A MySpace page, Bebo, Yahoo Buzz. The more networks you use, the more people you reach.

Put share buttons on your current Urbal Fix web page, so that whenever you add something to it you can share it to all your networks with a mouse click.

Maybe some kind volunteers will help set up and administrate the networks for you?

Ok,

Twitter @Urbalinstitute

Facebook/pages/The-Urbal-Institute

Will that do for now?

Cheers

Tom

PS When I first went to facebook, you couldn't have a 'business' page without a 'personal' page, and it was the personal one which put my head in a spin, because I could never tell t'other from which, nor turn off all the nonsense of people poking each other (do the Americans know what that means in Britain?) and so on. Now it seems you can just have a business page. Hooray.

Thanks Tom

I searched and couldn't find on Facebook to I followed the link you put at the bottom of The Urbal Institute webpage. I invited my facebook feinds to visit and follow the The Urbal Fix videos link.

I see it doesn't have a follow or join option. Did you want this option?

Of to find the Twitter page.
