Tech: Iphone apps versus Android 2.2 apps

07 Jul 10 - 05:20 PM (#2941386)
Subject: Tech: Iphone versus Android phones
From: Arthur_itus

Just looking into this as my daughter is planning to have one of these in August on a pay monthly (free phone) basis.

Currently looking at

Iphone 4

HTC Desire
Nexus one from Google
Samsung Galaxy S 16gb

The last 3 are using Android 2.1, but I am advising my daughter to wait for Android 2.2

Any mudcatters got any advice based on those.
I am inclined to go the Android route.

Blimey, hasn't technology improved.

Thanks

oops, I thought I had changed the title to read

Tech: Iphone versus Android phones

However, I must have done soemthing wrong.

Is it possible that an elf could alter the title accordingly for me please.

Many thanks

One guy I know (who updates this sort of gadget regularly and uses it constantly) just switched to Android, and is quite happy.

The sheer number of applications available for the iPhone argues in its favor. Especially if, as rumored, they will be available on a Verizon plan. I have had an iPhone for several years and am very happy with it.

But I have not tried an Android.

The new iPhone 4 is very elegant, and the antenna problem is a non-issue for me since I would get a bumper for it anyway, not being too gentle in day to day life.

...and of course, the "sheer number" of applications available for Windows argues in its favor over MAC, I suppose? *grin*

I think it is like 8000 to 23,000 right now for Android.....one wonders what 10-15 thousand more actually gets you.

In reality, there 'should' be room for 3-4 hardware systems in this area, to suit different tastes...just as there are different autos, computers, washing machines, etc.

Try both...see what 'feels' right.

Are the apps free with the Iphone? Personally, I am not keen on going the MAC route. The antenna issue is a bit disconcerting. I beleive a few people are starting to sue Apple.

I believe the apps are free with Android (WTF did they get that name from - I keep on thinking of Andrex toilet paper - I will wait for the crap comments on that)

Thanks for the info so far.

Well is is just better - the apps are great and the entennae issue is really a non issue or get a 3GS that doesnt have the antennae issue

All IMO obviously -

Are the apps free Matt?

I personally think the iphone is overpriced becuase it is very much a material (I must have, in order to show off) thing.

I am led to believe that the HTC Desire is just as good.

what is the key difference between the iphone 4 and the iphone 3GS?

Android 2.1 versus 2.2 is probably not much of an issue for most people. I got my Android phone (HTC Droid Eris) when it still had 1.5. The single biggest drawback was that it couldn't deliver Google's turn-by-turn navigation. Three months later, Verizon upgraded to Android 2.1, and I no longer need to ask if I should buy a GPS.

So the real question is not the number of apps, but the apps that are likely to appeal to your daughter. As others have said, there are many more apps for the iPhone than for Android phones, but for both devices, many of the apps are multiples (dozens if not hundreds of Sudoku apps, for example; hundreds if not thousands of photo-organizing apps). Don't confuse "feature" (analogous to "number of apps") with "benefit" (usefulness to you).

I use apps for the Washington DC metro, for creating custom ringtones (I know it's one of my children without even looking at the phone), for reading news in French, for "killing" idle apps that would otherwise take up phone memory. I review comments or post to my WordPress blogs. I'm a big user of Evernote (Evernote.com): for instance, I use it to take a photo of a price tag, a sign, someone's business card; I can then retrieve that either on my phone or on my computer (Evernote can ever read the text in images).

I can use PDANet to turn my phone into a wireless hot spot when I can't find free wireless (slow, but beats "nothing"). I have a digital tuner for my guitar. I've even lost weight with the help of a Weight Watcher diary that tracks "points" in the WW system.

All of these are free apps. I haven't yet felt the need to download a pay app, though in a few cases I've sent donations to the developer because of the benefit their work has brought me.

It could be that apps like these hold no interest for your daughter. I suspect others will, and I imagine both platforms have something to offer. As long as she's willing to accept the contract terms, she can always get a different phone next time.

Pay attention to deals and bundles. My wife and I decided to take advantage of a buy-one-get-one offer for the same phone. Yes, it required a 2-year contract, but after rebate the total cost of the phones themselves was $49.99.

We kept our previous plan for call minutes; the mandatory data plan added $30 per phone per month. While $360 a year is not necessarily cheap, I'm content to spend $1 per day to have the internet in my pocket.

For much less than Verizon's accessory bundle, I bought a second after-market power cord and a car charger. You can also charge the Eris, somewhat slowly, with a standard USB cable connected to your computer; I use the same cable that transfer photos from my (real) camera to the computer.

OD
Thats much the same for my daughter. She will go on a contract.
Android 2.2 allows you to use I think Flashplayer 10, whereas 2.1 doesn't.
I believe 2.2 is there for the Lexus already, if you buy from Google.
As we would probably use Vodafone in the UK (Rural area but picks up reception very good), I am waiting to see if Vodafone come up with an agreement with Google. That seems to be the stumbling block at the moment.

This is all good info and is helping me a lot.

What's the screen like OD on the HTC?

iPhone. The interface is amazing and makes everything else seem clunky and inferior. It is intuitive, user-friendly and the one thing I always have to have in my pocket - when out and about, can do without camera, video camera, satnav, laptop...it's an all-in-one device that just works really, really well.

The apps are just gravy.

iphone-4-vs-htc-desire

Vodafone

Free iphone 4 £60 a month for 24 months.

Free HTC Desire £30 a month for 24 months

Now convince me that the extra £30 a month for 24 months is worth it!

That's a different and certainly valid question! (I pay around £30 month but have an older iPhone model).

Regarding the technology, usability, user interface and apps, the iPhone is much superior IMHO.

A large number of apps are free for the iPhone. A larger number cost 99 cents or a couple of bucks, less than a pound.
If the HTC Desire covers your needs, go for it. No sense getting cranky. I will say that Apple missed a bet not snapping up Snapdragon--a Qualcomm chip designed right here in sunny San Diego.

I guess the price is the deciding factor and if you can get most of what the iPhone offers and it satisfies your needs, then the Android route is the way to go.
I agree, no point in getting cranky Amos :-)
I normally take time to investigate and validate and then just go for what I think is OK for my needs/daughters.

The arguments for the iPhone and the cost, have not turned my head enough to want to go that route.

I have left it up to my daughter and she has looked at the facts and decided that the Android route will be more than satisfactory for her.

I wish I had that sort of technology when I was her age.

Thanks for all the comments. I will post back on what she does.

In between times if anybody can truly convince me that the Kings new clothes are real.........

I pay £40/month. I got my first Iphone for £99 with a £30/month contract. I upgraded when my contract was up 18 months later to £40/month (and a generous 600 minutes, which I make good use of) with a free phone...and sold my old handset for £185.

Handy.

But it's a 3Gs. If you're after an iPhone 4 you won't get such a competitive deal as it's brand spanking new, but the 3Gs is fabulous, especially if it's your first smartphone, and no antenna issues.

For what it's worth, Arthur, my son, who's very technically adept & does work I'm not qualified to describe for a Silicon Valley firm, went with the
HTC Droid Incredible, which probably has a UK counterpart as well (the Desire, if I read the review correctly). Price was not an object for him, but phone coverage in the U.S. for the iPhone is notoriously spotty, which led him to chose the Incredible.

Here's a link to the Android Market where you can see the kinds of apps available, though for full details you have to use the Market app on your phone. Daft, but that's marketing for you.

Although it's apparently not a big thing in the legitimate Ap market, warnings about iPhone/Android malware are beginning to ooze into public view.

Probably no need for panic, but those with "smart phones" may want to keep an eye on what the threats are, and the current article Six Worst Offenders gives a "sneak preview" of what may be on the horizon.

FYI only.

BTW, nobody who has paid the OTT price for an iPhone, is ever going to diss it. So I would treat the lavish praise as wallet talk.

I don't think it really matters what phone you have. What is more important is how you protect you valauble asset.

I have HTC Wildfire and am very happy with it. My daughter has a Galaxy S (lovely peice of kit).

50% of all apps contain code to trawl for your browsing habits. And then target you presumerably with ads.
