At the concert I "joined in" (safely 50 yards back from the bands) with Peoria, Margie, Girls go crazy about th way I walk, Bourbon St, Down by the Riverside [is that one folk?), John Brown's Body, Just a Gigolo, and (they were a West Country band) Drink up thee cider. I think that's 10. All without the aid of Metaxas (but with the aid of a rather nice bottle of blush de Syrah rose) in the open air, hardly any rain and great fireworks later. |

I've posted one of his songs to the DT, but have been reluctant to post more since I know he copyrights them, and haven't had a chance to ask him how he'd feel about it. For my money, Tim Wallace and Mark Graham are the funniest songwriters in the 'folk' community going these days (apologies to Lou and Peter Berryman, who have some gems). I've had problems with my sex life since I fell and sprained my wrist, and, my other songs are just as bad as this. refrain la la la etc. On the stage I stand so bravely for a folkie is my trade and I carry the reminder, of every gig I ever played like at the legion, I fled in fear, with the imprint of a Moosehead bottle stamped behind my ear, and a voice that yelled "Dont play that shit in here!!" la la la etc Oh, I've sung the folk tradition with my finger behind my ear, 'cause half the stuff I'm singing, I just cant bear to hear but, I'm an artist.. bar after bar, to the rhythm of a beat up old 5 string K-Tel guitar. la la la In St. Peter's town one night I clean forgot the second verse, so, I sang the 27th... twice as loud.. and in reverse.. and no one noticed... I took a bow, and, a long look at my wrist watch made some faces at the growd. la la la I've got my act together now, I've got it figured out, dropping hairballs of string rosin, mainlining on Stout, and having hangups, pick up my guitar in vain, but, they're leaving, they are leaving, and the Folkie still remains in this cruddy bar to sing one last refrain.. la la la |

I do indeed remember the James Taylor song after reading the chorus supplied by Guest/Augie. I just wasn't aware of the title. Now, it looks to me like George Harrison is the one who copped an existing song title from "a contemporary and label-mate"! I'm almost certain that the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album (featuring George's very well-know and often-covered SINTWSM) came out at least a year after that James Taylor album. Mea culpa! |

I was trying to get an idea of what people were singing. Then when people ask 'What is Folk Singing?' they could look at this thread and find out what folk are REALLY singing. There's an awful lot (most of them) of these songs that individually wouldn't be considered folk music. But as a whole they are what is being sung in the folk world. |

At one two of the group homes I work at, we have a music therapist that comes and plays guitar for the clients, though his repertoire is much larger. He adapts each song to fit in a clients name. For instance in singing, "Baby Beluga", he substitutes a clients name and adjusts verses around some quirk in their character. I think that might be part and parcel of the folk process. We had to go for 2 1/2 hours, and I had a cold and wasn't functioning well, so she did a lot of lead singing and fiddle tunes. We didn't do some of our standards, since I hate to sing them when no one's really listening to the lyrics, but we had fun dredging up some old stuff that had been neglected. I was so foggy, I can't remember for sure all the leads I did.
