Your most recent 10 songs

Subject: Your most recent 10 songs
From: Bert

In view of recent discussions about what is folk music, I am curious as to what Mudcatters are actually singing now.

What are the last ten songs that you have sung in public? That is on stage, in a circle or sing or among friends.

Here's my list...

Laddies Who Fought and Won - by Harry Lauder
That's Not My Colorado - by Katlaughing
Size doesn't Matter - by Bert Hansell
Bathing Angel - by Bert Hansell
Silicone Cindy - by Bert Hansell
Liverpool Judies - traditional
Come to the Bower - by Allen Damron
Plastic Flower Seeds - by Bert Hansell
British Workman's Grave - Music Hall?
While London Sleeps - Music Hall?

Bert.

I prefer to avoid singing but sometimes I end up doing somthing. I guess that my most recent 10 are:

Dead Dog Scrumpy,
The Sick Note,
Johnny Jump Up,
The Wild Rover,
The Black Velvet Band,
The Fields of Athenry,
Something with a chorus that starts 'I've a fine felt hat and a strong pair of brogues',
The Leaving of Liverpool,
I'll Tell My Ma,
Sam Hall.

My last two public appearances were a song circle and a performance where I was billed as a blues singer. Some songs I performed:

Baby, Please Don't Go - Trad.
Run All the Way (a modern civil war tune) - ?
To Sing the Blues - Himler & Kennedy
When Your Man Gets Busted - ?
Good Mornin' Blues - Huddie Ledbetter
You Don't Even Care - Tim Wallace
Airplane Blues - Lightnin' Hopkins
When She Wants Good Lovin' - Leiber & Stoller
Stop Doin' So Well - Christina Olsen
Come Back Baby - Blind Boy Fuller (?)
Go Down Ol' Hannah - trad.

Well, we had an Elvis tape in the car on the way back from the jazz on Saturday so Ole Shep and Hound Dog were the last 2. At the concert I "joined in" (safely 50 yards back from the bands) with Peoria,
Margie,
Girls go crazy about th way I walk,
Bourbon St,
Down by the Riverside [is that one folk?),
John Brown's Body,
Just a Gigolo, and
(they were a West Country band) Drink up thee cider.
I think that's 10. All without the aid of Metaxas (but with the aid of a rather nice bottle of blush de Syrah rose) in the open air, hardly any rain and great fireworks later.

This bunch of songs might look more logical if I wasn't trying to learn banjo accompaniment for some of them - I wouldn't recommend this lot together as a set!

Sammy's Bar
Roseville Fair
Fifty Miles Of Elbow Room
Hello In There
A Thousand Miles Away
Swansea Town
Plastic Jesus
Jug Band Music
Ukulele Lady

Hmmm, maybe I'm only singing one long song with no breaks. Perhaps another thread might ask for the longest song title (nothing from Julie Andrews)

Thankyou Bruce, you have just reminded me of Sammy's Bar - a song that I used to love but have not heard in years. Even though I am far more into paying than singing, I am going to have to find the words to this one as I can only remember bits of it.

Likely candidates (can't be absolutely sure they were the LAST, but...)from me:

Roseville Fair / Bill Staines
Arrow / Cheryl Wheeler
Blue Umbrella / John Prine
Matt Hyland / Trad ?
Water is Wide / Trad ?
Slow Down / Kevin Mulvenna (a local s/s friend)
Lying to the Moon / Matraca Berg (via Robin and Linda Willaims)
Circle Game / Joni Mitchell
The Boy With The Moon and Star on his Head / Cat Stevens
(Which just might get to claim that "longest title" Bruce from Bathurst was looking for)

and almost always end with Amazing Grace

Sunday night at the Starry Plough I sang "My Grandfather's Clock"
Two weeks earlier, same place, it was "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye"
My usual solos with the Born Once Gospel Singers in performance are "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy" (A. P. Carter?) and "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" (Dylan) Others in which I sing verses and they join in the chorus in sings at Sally's house are "The Green Green Grass of Home," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," "Sittin' on Top of the World," "Times Are Gettin' Hard"
Songs I'm planning for future Starry Plough performances include Bob Gibson's "Abiline," with my added verses, of course, "Jody and the Kid" by Kris Kristopherson, and maybe Doc Watson's version of "Alberta"

Can't be sure, but the list is approximately:

No Matter How She Done It — Tampa Red/Georgia Tom
Weeping Willow — Cephus & Wiggins (written by the latter)
Baby, I Want You To Know — Bo Carter
Nobody Knows Y ou When You're Down And Out — Jimmie Cox
Cannonball — Trad? Carters?
How Long — Broonzy
In The Evenin' — also Broonzy, I think
Sportin' Life Blues — ????
Where Were You, Baby? — Josh White
Candy Man — John Hurt

I may have mixed in some other ones, but this is a pretty typical lineup for me, along with some other ragtime tunes and the odd Dylan, Tom Rush or Willie Nelson song and a few civil war ditties.

and, of course, "Glory, Glory Psychotherapy"

in the folkish vein Monday night as part of my performance.

Presently, I'm learning "Seven Bridges Road," "So Lonesome I Cry," and "How Will I Ever Be Simple Again"(Richard Thompson).

And I need to learn three new and wonderful bluegrass songs within two weeks for a contest that's coming up. Any suggestions? (I have a good range, and can sing way high up there...)

The last couple of times Bill let me go out for an evening, we went to folkie parties. Here's what I remember of what I sang, in no particular order:

The Vacant Chair (Civil War song) ... All the Cowhands wanta Marry Harriet -- (A Western swing song from the 40's); I didn't start it, but I was the only one there who knew all the words ... Run Come See, Jerusalem ... I Dream of Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair (Steven Foster) ... "Carly's Song," a friendship song by Carly Gewirz ... Children of the Heavenly Father, translation of a Scandinavian hymn ... Have been practicing The Night Visiting Song (trad), Sheath and Knife (Childe), Put on Your Old Grey Bonnet (pop song from the 20's), Beautiful Ohio (pop song from the 20's), John Peel, -- a real gemisch.

Wyo, do you do Hard Times Come Again No More? Another one I like for a woman with a good voice and good range is The Lover's Return, an A. P. Carter song using the tune of Just a Closer Walk With Thee. John Prine's Paradise is another good one--I've heard it sung only by men, but there's no reason it shouldn't be sung by a woman. A lovely song on the same theme--but with not enough verses--is Aragon Mill. Every Night When the Sun Goes In is a great bluesy woman's song. --seed

I've posted one of his songs to the DT, but have been reluctant to post more since I know he copyrights them, and haven't had a chance to ask him how he'd feel about it. For my money, Tim Wallace and Mark Graham are the funniest songwriters in the 'folk' community going these days (apologies to Lou and Peter Berryman, who have some gems).

In fact, the last songs I've been singing are

Wow!, what a crew! As I recall songs included: Isle of Haute Lullaby, Stewball, Sammy's Bar, The Loss of the Rupert Bay, Where Have All the Flowers Gone, Night Rider's Lament, The Unicorn, The Final Trawl, Goodbye, Fare You Well, and I accompanied Jeri & her fiddle on some of her original songs and others like Whisky Before Breakfast, and Ashoken Farewell. I've come too far from where I started from.

Nobody told that the road would be easy

I don't believe he brought me this far to leave me.

2. Logie O'Buchan - trad., as sung by Cilla Fisher

4. Canaday-I-O - trad.; AKA "The Wearing of the Blue", a transvestite ballad a la Nic Jones
5. Maid of Cabra West - trad.; from Frank Harte
6. Whaur' Will We Gang? - A. Mitchell; a fine song about the death of the fishing trade
7. When This Old Hat Was New - trad.; my husband's song, I sing harmony all through
8. The Outside Track - Lawson/Hallom; I've added Lawson's first verse back to the song
9. Lonely Waterloo - trad./Sproule

Here goes Roger
THE FOLKIE
Oh I am a folk musician tho' my songs are seldom sold, 'cause I masacre the music with three feet of spanish chipboard and a capo..
I do requests, just the ones that have three chords in them and disregard the rest
Seeking free beer and expenses I come looking for a job.
but, I never get no offers, just a come-on from some groupie in Lower Sackville..

I do declare. I've had problems with my sex life since I fell and sprained my wrist,
and, my other songs are just as bad as this.
refrain la la la etc.

On the stage I stand so bravely for a folkie is my trade
and I carry the reminder, of every gig I ever played
like at the legion,
I fled in fear, with the imprint of a Moosehead bottle stamped behind my ear,
and a voice that yelled "Dont play that shit in here!!"
la la la etc

Oh, I've sung the folk tradition with my finger behind my ear,
'cause half the stuff I'm singing, I just cant bear to hear
but, I'm an artist.. bar after bar,
to the rhythm of a beat up old 5 string K-Tel guitar.
la la la

In St. Peter's town one night I clean forgot the second verse,
so, I sang the 27th... twice as loud.. and in reverse..
and no one noticed...
I took a bow, and, a long look at my wrist watch made some faces at the growd.
la la la

I've got my act together now, I've got it figured out,
dropping hairballs of string rosin, mainlining on Stout,
and having hangups,
pick up my guitar in vain, but, they're leaving, they are leaving,
and the Folkie still remains in this cruddy bar to sing one last refrain..
la la la

"Most recent"?? I'm not sure. They would all be songs sung in Paltalk rooms, and I don't keep track of what I sing there. Ten of the songs sung very recently there would be something like this, in no particular order:

I've Got No Use for the Women
Lincolnshire Poacher (It's my delight on a shiny night, in the season       of the year)
Three Jolly Rogues of Lynn
The Frozen Logger
Eggs and Marrowbone
Bird in a Gilded Cage
The Zebra Dun
The Cherry Tree Carol
The Great American Bum
Don't Go in Them Lions' Cage Tonight

Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out
The Wraggle Taggle Gypsies
Compliments Returned
Dat Du Meen Leevsten Bist (a night-visiting song in Plattdeutsch !)

My group has a weekly 90-minute gig, strictly instrumental.
We try to vary what we play, but most weeks, sometime in the evening, you're likely to hear:

Redwing
Westphalia Waltz
Wayfaring Stranger
Stone's Rag
Joe Turner Blues

I'll stop the instrumental list there, so I can mention five I'm most likely to sing on those rare occasions I'm asked:

Corinna, Corinna
I'll Fly Away
Life's Railway to Heaven
This World is not My Home
Rivers of Texas (Down By the Brazos)

Also, for those who might be interested, two of the songs attributed in postings above to the Carter Family, "Jimmie Brown the Newsboy," and "You've Been A Friend to Me," were written by W. S. Hays, a tidbit I discovered while researching another current thread "The Lily of the Valley."

I'm guessing that Shelves of Herring is a parody of Bonnie Shoals of Herring and is about jars of rollmops on a grocery shelf.

Definitely. Shelves of Herring is a parody of Shoals of Herring. I heard the late John Dwyer (here and here) sing it many times. Pretty hilarious.

Shelves of Herring [Frederic Schroers of Portland, Oregon]

It was a fine and a pleasant day,
In a supermarket I was faring,
And I walked for miles
Up and down the aisles,
As I hunted for the shelves of herring.

Shopping trolleys few
And the lines were long,
And the people, sure they took some bearing.
There was little kindness And the kids were many,
As I hunted for the shelves of herring.

O I took my catch to a ten-item line,
And at me the cashier sure was swearing;
For I'd a hundred cans of the silver darlings
That I'd taken from the shelves of herring!

Now for six long months I've been eating fish,
And my house it sure could use an airing!
And now I know, never again I'll go
For to hunt the shelves for tins of herring!

Ca' them where the burnie roes

Will you come doon the water side

And no body to see me.

Ca' the Yowes...

Caulf leather shoon upon your feet
And in my arms you'll lie and sleep
And you shall be my dearie

If you but stand by what you said

Nick (9:00 this am):

"Something in the Way She Moves" by James Taylor?

Isn't that a George Harrison song? I doubt that JT would use the same title as a monster hit by a contemporary and a one-time label-mate. (James Taylor was the first non-Beatle to sign with Apple, who released his eponymous first album in 67 or 68.)

Of course, I don't doubt that he'd *cover* it. I'm just surprised that one wouldn't know the origin of that well-known song.

If it *is* a different song, or if I am otherwise out of line, please enlighten.

It is indeed a different song. Taylor wrote it ~1968 and you can find it on the first James Taylor album (along with "Goin to Carolina in My Mind"). That first album was released about a year before the monster Sweet Baby James came out.

You might remember the chorus:

And I feel fine anytime she's around me now
She's around me now just about all the time
And if I'm well you can tell she's been with me now
She's been with me now, quite a long, long time
And I feel fine

Great thread! Nice to see some names I don't always see. (But then, I spend more time on the BS side, so that probably explains it.)

Let The Band Play Dixie, by the late, great Bob Gibson
My Favorite Song--Bob Zentz
Song for a Winter's Night--Gordon Lightfoot
Down the Road--Bill Staines
Marvelous Toy--Tom Paxton
Last Thing On My Mind--Paxton
Dog--Tom Dundee (as heard done by Bryan Bowers)
The Gambler--Kenny Rogers
White Collar Holler--Stan Rogers
Field Behind the Plow--Stan, again

And I have to pick only two songs to play at an upcoming benefit at the College. How can I pick just two? And my list of songs that I'd love to play if only I was given the chance to share them goes easily 25 songs for the bare minimum. What do other folks do?

It is supposed to be "light," so I am leaning, so far, to playing "Folk Song Army" by Tom Lehrer, (each and every one of us...cares) and possibly "Somos El Barco" for that warm and fuzzy folkie sing-along togetherness angle.

By the way, I will repeat my offer: I have all of these songs transcribed (except the last two), and many of them with chords that I will share with anyone who wants them.

Like Alaska Mike, I sing my own. But an exception crept in recently, as I became besotted by the Spiers & Boden version of a gorgeous song:

"Courting too slow" (Trad lyrics, tune by Peter Bellamy)

Excluding my own, other songs that I trot out from time to time:

"Ik zeg adieu" (trad Flemish, c 1645)
"Belle qui tiends ma vie" (French madrigal)
"Come all ye worthy Christian men" (trad hymn)
"The battle of Alma" (trad)
"When you are old and grey" (Tom Lehrer)
"Girl on a train" (Pete Atkin)
"The Flowers and the Wine" (Clive James/Pete Atkin)
"Love on the sands" (Jeremy Taylor)
"Drinking with Rosie" (Richard Digance)

Referring back to the 15th, 6:30 pm:

Thanks for setting me straight on "Something in the Way She Moves," two entirely different songs with the same title. I do indeed remember the James Taylor song after reading the chorus supplied by Guest/Augie. I just wasn't aware of the title.

Now, it looks to me like George Harrison is the one who copped an existing song title from "a contemporary and label-mate"! I'm almost certain that the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album (featuring George's very well-know and often-covered SINTWSM) came out at least a year after that James Taylor album.

Mea culpa!

The Beatles song is actually called "Something", but according to This site
the use of those words in the opening line was no coincidence:

Something

George Harrison

George Harrison got the idea for this song in 1968, after listening to a song by James Taylor, titled, Something In The Way She Moves, and decided to build a song around it. Harrison finished the song, and recorded it in February, April and again in May 1969 during the Abbey Road Sessions.

El Greko:

You can actually sing the bridge to "When You Are Old and Grey," without a cheat sheet? I thought only Tom His Own Self, and I, could, and I only because I learned it when it first came out and I was in Junior High, when I could remember things.

It's not all true, but too much of it is.

Does practicing in a group-home at work count? I just started learning/re-learning, while following a dream more than 40 years old. So far I've played (with a couple clients listening while I practice) She'll be comin' round the mountain, Bye Bye Love, Down in the valley, Red River Valley,Will the Circle be Unbroken, Silent Night, Jingle Bells (in July)!, Marianne (all the kids love Marianne, siftin'seashells by the sand.), Quinn the Eskimo, This Land is Your Land (I'd like to get the Canadian version), and a toughy I'm just starting to work on, Scarborough Fair. I think that's about it. Whew, Mike

Mike, 'Does practicing in a group-home at work count?' Yes sure, why not.

Dave, you ask 'Why ten?' No reason really. I was trying to get an idea of what people were singing.

Then when people ask 'What is Folk Singing?' they could look at this thread and find out what folk are REALLY singing.

There's an awful lot (most of them) of these songs that individually wouldn't be considered folk music. But as a whole they are what is being sung in the folk world.

Bert, a couple songs I neglected to mention are, Oh, Suzanna, Hey ho, Nobody Home,Go tell Aunt Rhody, Careless Love, and Amazing Grace. At one two of the group homes I work at, we have a music therapist that comes and plays guitar for the clients, though his repertoire is much larger. He adapts each song to fit in a clients name. For instance in singing, "Baby Beluga", he substitutes a clients name and adjusts verses around some quirk in their character. I think that might be part and parcel of the folk process. Thanks, Mike

We had a fifteen minute slot at an "Auden and Folk" concert, songs collected by WH Auden and printed in " The Poets Tongue and "The Oxford Book of Light Verse". We decided to race through six and dispense with introductions. Whilst we stuck to the words printed in the books, everyone else, including Carthy, sang the "time revised" versions. Spanish Ladies was the only song in any of our current set although Lowlands and Let the Toast Pass will probably sneak into the next gig.

Thought a lot of people were in their own "Time Warp". Then saw the first date of this thread was in 1999 and through to '04. Understandable.

So I'll join "Time Warpers Amonymous" if I may.

The list in '99 would have been different.
It changes with the years, the influences and the theme nights.

2006 it's :

"Gretna Green" Tony Philip's. Written for a Blacksmith's theme evening.
"What's The Use Of Wings". John Wright. Wonderful use of words.
"Banks Of The Dee". Trad, via Norma Waterson.
"Claudy Banks". Trad, via Alex Campbell.
"Colin And Pheobe". Trad, via Ed Rennie.
"Carrion Crow". Trad, from Alfred William's "Folksongs Of The Upper Thames"
"Barefoot Dangler. Freebee, from ElGreko's website. Thanks George.
"Dockyard Gate". Trad, via Pete Bellamy.
"Channels". Graham Perry, via Pete Harris. I was a "Lecky" on Union Castle Line for two years so I know the feeling in this one.
"Get Up And Go". Pete Seeger. Pete wrote this when he was 39! He thought he was getting old. Now nearly twice that! Nice one Pete.

And.

Listening to :
Well, just broke up with my lady. So.
"Breathing Space". Brian Bedford, via Artisan. Brilliant stuff! And wonderfull harmony singing. Check it out.

And :
Listening to and Studying :
Steve Tilson's latest Cd. of trad songs "Of Many Hands". Nicely done Steve. Lots of Golden Oldies on here, the tradition moves on.

And :
Preparing for Miskin : - to be sung in, Norwegian!
"The Cruel Sister" Trad, via "Folque". A Norwegian folk rock group, a-la Steeleye.

What an interesting thread..

I never learn more than one or two songs each week. So I'm quite slow at setting them down. And this list will take me well back before Xmas, as I had a good month of snotty oozing which put me off singing altogether.

Death and the Lady
John Barleycorn
Gay Green Gown (Graham and Eileen Pratt)
Go Into a Hare (Allansford Pursuit)
The Unquiet Grave
Bushes and Briars
A Begging I Will Go
The Great Silkie
The Twa Corbies
Ar Eirinn Ni Neosfainne Ce Hi

I wonder what my equivalent list will be come the Summer, when hopefully I'll have a greater knowledge base and understanding of traditional folk songs.

Saturday afternoon, Mizchuck and I did a duo at an art studio reception up at Killington. We had to go for 2 1/2 hours, and I had a cold and wasn't functioning well, so she did a lot of lead singing and fiddle tunes. We didn't do some of our standards, since I hate to sing them when no one's really listening to the lyrics, but we had fun dredging up some old stuff that had been neglected. I was so foggy, I can't remember for sure all the leads I did. As near as I recall, I did do these:

Billy Gray (Norman Blake)
Sky Above, the Mud Below, The (Tom Russell)
William Faulkner in Hollywood (Tom Russell)
Fifty Years Ago (Ian Tyson)
Mineral Wells (Tom Russell)
How the Queen of the Gypsies Met Trouble-and-Pain (Lyrics, Nancy Willard; melody my own)
You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive (Darrell Scott)
Yankee Lady (Jesse Winchester)

Finished with medley of Mouth of the Musselshell (Ian Tyson/Tom Russell) and Say Goodbye to Montana (Alex Harvey, Tim Rouillier).

Ten? Some of us dream of doing ten...

I accidentally deleted my handy spreadsheet the other day, but I think my last ten would probably be

Hughie the Graeme
the Scarecrow (Lal Waterson)
Little Musgrave
Horns
This is the ballad of Sir Patrick Spens (P. R.)
Lord Allenwater
Lowlands
Poor old horse
The valiant sailor
The bonny bunch of roses

I think my favourite out of all of those is Horns (Horns! Large horns!) It's about sex and death, it's completely barking mad, it's got a chorus that sounds great in three-part harmony and it's over before anyone knows what's hit them. What, as they say, is not to like?

I play mostly my own songs. But I've built up quite a few covers and traditionals over the past year.

On the 5-string open-back banjo:

Paint It Black – the Rolling Stones
Willie of the Winsbury (trad)
Ballad of the Bollweevil (using Mance Lipscombe's melody, which sounds a bit like Frankie & Johnny and unlike any other 'Bollweevil' I've ever heard)
Dear Prudence (the Beatles)
(the above all lend themselves well to C tuning)
Darling Corey
In The Pines (sort of a hybrid version between Leadbelly's 'Black Girl' and Bill Monroe's version)

On resonator mandolin:

St James Infirmary
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child
Hand Me Down my Walking Cane (with the lyrics changed to excise all the religious stuff and make it exclusively about getting wasted on various different alcoholic beverages)
(all directly inspired by the excellent Dix Bruce "Teach Yourself" book, which I can thoroughly recommend)
Germ Free Adolescents by X-Ray Spex

On acoustic guitar:

Brisk Young Widow (version based on the arrangement in a book of Cecil Sharp transcribed for guitar I found in Brixton library)
Parachute Woman by the Rolling Stones
I Need Somebody by the Stooges
Dum Dum Boys by the Stooges
No-one Knows by Queens of the Stone Age

On charango:

Theme from The Flumps

More than 10. All these songs have the features that either they can be sung walking to the subway, can be sung at a bluegrass/country session, have good choruses people can join in with easily--or a combination of the above.

Except Road to Mandalay, which I just think captures the flavor of its time perfectly. And besides the Bellamy tune is great for climbing hills.

Hey John P see you are into Polska's. Well done.

Went through the list to see what I was doing three years ago

2006 it's :

"Gretna Green" Tony Philip's. Written for a Blacksmith's theme evening.
"What's The Use Of Wings". Brian Bedford.

Here We Come A-wassailing.    Still wishing everyone a Happy New Year.

Plus a couple of Swedish tunes to finish
