It seems that a lots of chaps seem to have a bit of a thing when they hit their mid forties, and feel the need to go out and buy something that gives them that little bit of rebelion, freedom, devil may care....................

Model T, Tri Chevy, E Type, Austin Healy Mk 111, Tr6, Aston DB6, Porche 911 1973 Carerra 2.3 RS.............Or the ultimate iron fist in a velvet glove...............In purple!
Bently

Even with a turbo the size of a dustbin, I think W.O. Would be pleased! All this for less than a middle of the range BMW 3 series, keep the milage under 5k a year and even the services are cheaper!

So what would be your crisis car?

Mines that big bad Bently Turbo R......................

Wouldn't that hurt your street cred as a folksinger? You can't sing the blues and drive home in a Bentley unless you're BB King.

Really boring looking 20 year old 7 series Volvo - er - with a B234F+T engine (translation, a custom built hybrid of the twin-cam and turbocharged engines). On youtube you can find some examples of Swedes who have got them out to very silly powers and speeds, one of over 530 BHP, an engine running on a stand with the exhaust pipes glowing allegedly turning out about 1,000bhp (!) and two kids in their homebrew with the speedo needle pointing vertically downwards which would translate to about 170mph, apparently on public roads!!

ALthough I'd also like a series 7 or series 9 Jag, or a 3.8 Mark II, or a D-type replica.

I have ridden in a Bentley Mulsanne turbo (not the full 400 bhp jobbie linked to above) and was underwhelmed. Not as much sheer grunt as I would have expected and the redline was a mere 4,500 revs.

Well I've hit my mid-60s, and my car - the most comfortable car I've ever owned - in immaculate condition, large, powerful, 23 years old, head-turning, sexy (hah!), silver, leather seats, thirsty, turbocharged - is my 1987 Volvo 240 GLT Estate...

Women don't throw their clothes at me when I drive past - they add an extra layer.

It's an old warhorse but it's only done 90,000 miles in 23 years and the 2.3 litre engine can pull 5 musicians and a ton of gear. Oh, and on a good day, I can get over 20mpg.

Now getting a new guitar or concertina is a much more sensible way of dealing with a middle age crisis. Or most crises.

I had my middle age crisis car - a bright yellow Fiat Punto GT that could do up to 120 mph. It was great fun flooring it when the guy alongside sat revving up and grinning at the middle aged lady in the little car.

I loved that car but changed to a Citroen four door saloon when the grandbabies came along.

Mine was a Jeep Wrangler. They looked so cool, and Wrangler owners wave to each other on the road, so it seems like you're joining a club that doesn't have any specific rules as to membership, except for the car. It lasted me 10 years and 200,000 miles, but in the end, with repairs, I think I paid twice what it originally cost, and in the end, had so many things wrong with it that my mechanic couldn't fix that I had to replace it. I don't recommend Wranglers, regardless of how much fun they are to drive.

Man, ya'll don't know how to have no mid-life crisis!!! Ya'll listen up... Part og havin' one isn't gettin' some stuffy-ass Volvo, Bentley (which BTW, are junk) or ugly Citroens... Not a head-turner in the bunch... I mean, let's get real here... Accordin' to the MidLife Crisis Handbook ya' gotta have somethin' with some flair... You know, style... Like a nice Posrsche Carrara... 'Er a AC Cobra (kit car, of course)... 'Er even a tricked out 48 Chevu Fleetwood...

But no more talk of old man's car's please...

I bought a Toyota Paseo in 92 and drove it until last year when I got a Prius. 17 years and almost 300,000 miles. For me, a midlife crisis is paying $4 a gallon for gas again. Now, I'm better prepared. So drive your gas guzzlers and impress the ladies. You won't have the money to take them anywhere but you sure got a nice car. To me, a gas economic car is the way to go. Those who think having some monster that goes from 0-60 in 3 seconds is macho and liberating are stupid fools. Wake up. The only gas-saver I won't buy is a smart car. I want something that won't send me through the windshield if I collide with some kid on his tricycle.

I wouldn't want one of these, but my Rog's friend drove up from AZ just to talk to the folks who custom-build Flying Miatas. I didn't see any up close and he didn't buy one, but it sure looks as though these folks have fun with their expensive cars! And, they are just up the road a ways from us.:-)

A long time ago, I stood right next to a 1934 Cord and fell in love. I cannot find a good picture of one from that year, but this one isn't too bad: clickety.

In 1999, I was 51, single for seven years, and not having much luck with my love life. So, I bought a red, two-door 1999 Honda Civic. I think it reminded me of a very attractive woman who drove a similar car....but I didn't get to first base with her.
Three years later, I fell in love with a woman with a child, dogs, cats, and a Volvo station wagon; got married; and settled down. As with most of my cars, the hot little Honda ended up in the hands of a teenager - my stepson. But this is the first car I've given to a teenager, that hasn't been trashed in six months.

-Joe Offer, who never was comfortable having a middle-age crisis-

....but sometimes I wonder what happened to the very attractive woman with the red Civic...I never even got up the courage to ask her out.....

Okay, we have Amos and Kat who are ready for the mid-life crisis... Hondas, as Joe found out, won't get you to first base...

BTW, Kat... The Miatas aren't really all that expensive... You can find a nice used one for less than $5000...

The '34 Cord??? Different story... But a real classic raodster...

We're talkin' midlife crisis here... Not tricked out drag cars...

Google up '34 Cord here... That is what we are talkin' about here... Not 11 second drag cars... Mid life crisises is about womenz and they don't want to ride nowhere in a tricked out Volvo drag car... Or any Volvo, for that matter...

Now here's a few more hot cars for the mid life crisisers:

The new Dodge Charger is hot...

The new Camaro is hot...

The new Mustangs are hot...

These are babe's cars... You wnata a mid life crisis then keep the heck away from Volvos, no matter how fast or slow they are...

Here's a mid life crisis song. 'Sposed to be a husband wife duet. Wife's part indented.

I wanna have a mid life crisis
but if the truth be told

You can't have a mid life crisis
        Darling You're too old

I wanna drive a bright red sports car
with a pretty young blond for a date
I wanna have a mid life crisis

You've left it a bit too late
You coulda had a crisis at Forty
        or even at Fifty Five
If you'd wanted a mid life crisis
You should have done it while you're still alive

I want a pick up truck with monster wheels
I want to be stacked up with sex appeal
I want tattoos on my arms and chest
A Harley and a black leather vest
I want to let my hair grow long
I want to get to Nashville with this song
I want a Cowboy hat and belt and boots
I want a hand tailored white silk suit

I wanna have a mid life crisis
but if the truth be told

You can't have a mid life crisis
        Darling You're too old

I wanna drive a bright red sports car
with a pretty young blond for a date
I wanna have a mid life crisis

You've left it a bit too late
You coulda had a crisis at Forty
        or even at Fifty Five
If you'd wanted a mid life crisis
You should have done it while you're still alive

I wanna drive a bright red sports car
with a pretty young blond for a date

        Spoken:
        Enough about the blond,
get your saggy butt off of that couch
        and take out the garbage.

Spoken:

Ok. Ok. But how about a sports car?
What do you think about an Aston Martin?

I did it!
Earlier this year I swapped my sensible automatic family car for a Mazda Cabriolet - a little sports car.
It's a 1989, is rather well used and it's a manual but it looks like this!
It seems as if they're only available in Japan or NZ unless you import them yourself.
I really enjoyed driving it to work and around town but since I had the health change and 2 ops a couple of months ago, I can't change gears with that arm!!!
So I've had to use Mitch's old automatic Toyota and leave the Mazda for him.
Maybe in the summer.........

Sure I wanted the Nissan ZX but with 2 kids and driving less than 3K a year, I got an ol Caddy.
Having a cartoonists bent, I removed the Cadillac emblems and lettering and replaced it a chrome front hood Peace sign that makes it look Mercedesesque. With the remaining chrome letters from the park Ave and the deville, the back of the car now reads "keep parked"

The carbon footprint of the used car will be less than buying a new Prius since the energy of manufacture will not be exceeded by the caddy's fuel usage for the next 8-10 years.

When my ex-husband went through his mid-life crisis he got it into his head that he must have a Land Rover like a real lord of the manor. Don't get me wrong I liked it too it had a thermometer and nifty guage to check sea level, but to use only in the middle of the city centre of Bristol? I am just relieved he didn't get a Gun dog to set the look. On the other hand it might have been better company!

"Gave that up for sanity..." Is that a religious festival? I've heard of 'giving things up for Lent.'

Good idea, though, a Festival of Sanity. Providing it's MY sanity.

The roadster that f-prince put up and the '57 BelAir both good candidates... Even the Maita...

Actually, I'm kinda a Ford man myself... Think a '51 Ford coupe would be real nice... Of course it would have to have the flathead V-8 with 3-on-the-tree and overdrive, aftermarket AC and tricked paint... Yeah, that's my kinda mid-lifer, fir ya'...

My daughter and son-in law swear by their Porsche 356. Every trip, something has to be worked on (1955 model).
There is a Registry and get-togethers; if one is a member, there are pictures of their car and others at a do in Colorado.
(He is 50, so a qualified midlife crisis)

The 356, is only half a mid-lifer 'cause it ***is*** a Porsche... Carrara??? Different story... Has mid life crisis written all over it but the old bathtub 356's were okay in their day... Not exactly daily drivers these days... Most rusted out and are now gone forever...

Porsche 356 had room for two (closely). A rear drive 2-seater, it was Ferry Porsche's first production sports car and the ancestor of the 911. Of 77000 produced between 1948-1965, almost 50% still survive.
The Registry has 7700 members.
There are 47 member clubs world-wide.

Another club, the 356 Club of California, holds an annual Concour d'Elegance and publishes a magazine devoted to the car.

...have babe, as in woman, appeal...

Right here on page 2 of the Mid-Life Crisis Handbook...

BTW, Bentleys are kinda an old man's car... Same with their cousin, R-Royce... But seein' as I'm closer to the old Man stage of my life and over any temptation to have a mid-life thing I'd like an old Silver Cloud I or II as long as it doesn't have dual headlights... There comes a point wnen a car is so damm pig ugly, its beautiful! The 6R4 is a case in point, 410 BHP (In works trim) from a normally asperated 3.0 V6, 0-60 3 seconds, top speed 120-150 dependant on gearing and tyres, full time 4WD, and as for the sound...........! It sounds like a timber wolf, with its tail caught in a gin trap.

Fast, fun, stylish, and babe appeal..........Look no further! Lola T70b Mk3 The Lola factory is 2 miles from where I work, if you ask nicely and have more than a few spare quid, they still make them to order, and yes you could make it road leagal!

One of the first cars I really grew to appreciate was the SAAB Monte Carlo [1965] I bought and modified to a competitive rallye car [dyno'ed at 150 hp]. Used to blow 'vettes and 911's away--much to their surprise. I did that while working at a SAAB/Citroen dealership in NJ.

During that time, I began to appreciate the Citroen D types [DS--Greek for goddess, ID--French for idea]. I would love to own one again but would happily settle for a new Cit, even with the changes required for Federalization. The D's were true Grand Touring cars and worthy to stack up against any Mercedes of the era.

Lady Hillary owns a 91 Toyota MR2 which is a real head turner and also an 81 Celica GT which we have recently put classic plates on and intend to rent to the movies. Anyone out there know where we can get a sunroof seal for the Celica?

150bhp out of the Saab 3 cylinder 2-stroke? Or out of the Ford V4? The first would be miraculous, and the second more I think than Ford ever got out of a V4 while keeping the cylinder heads attached.

It was a 1500 that had been ported, given a 3/4 race cam, special crankshaft, heavy duty bearings, oversize valves, heavy duty valve springs, lightweight retainers, racing pistons with special bolts, double barrel carb, custom exhaust and balanced to a faretheewell. Oh yeah, we also put the high pressure lube system, steel balance shaft gear and a few other details I have forgotten.

And yes, it surprised the hell out of us, too. Sometimes, you just get it right.

Annoyed the heck out of the State inspectors when the non standard exhaust system had no leaks and no problems other than being loud.

The reason for the upgrade was the fact that I got tired of replacing bad crankshafts and replacing spark plugs when I was changing driving style. The last straw was burning out two of three pistons in Rhode Island on the way to visit friends in Maine. I ended up renting a car to tow the car back to NJ after finishing my vacation.

Oh, yeah, we also had the SAAB factory competition manual as our guide. We read and followed the manual and ordered parts straight from the racing/rallye car catalog. Stuff like the 3/4 race cam came from Jamestown, NY.

(But, Boberdz... Some o' these folks think that a mid life crisis car is one that will turn 12 second quarter miles...)

Well, okee dokee... If that's what ya'll think is a mid life criss then I'm sure yer wives will be very happy to not find that bra behind the seat in the SL...
