... with a ****ing garbage truck slamming tips around at 05:15. This happens every Monday morning and at least two other weekdays, sometimes as early as 04:30. The noise by-law prohibits such an activity from 22:00 to 07:00. And, since today is Saturday, and since I think I was enjoying getting some sleep after a fitful night, I was pissed off.

I bolted out of bed, grabbed my keys and stomped to the front door which I flung open with vigour. I listened for the offending vehicle and saw it pass my view briefly in the parking lot of the Community College. In a flash, I locked the door knob by hand and proceeded, in nightclothes and slippers, to my truck.

I drove into the parking lot and waited as I knew the garbage truck had gone to the rear of the college. It reappeared shortly and I was able to see a Miller company garbage truck. My ward councillor had told me he would have to know the name of the company before he could do anything about the complaint I lodged some time ago.

I returned home, still miffed. I unlocked the rear door knob and attempted to enter my house. The deadbolt was locked. The key was in my wallet. I do not carry a key for the front door knob. I had to pee. Then I had to pee REAL bad.

After peeing in the least "viewable place" in my back yard, muttering all the while, I got a step ladder and set it up as quietly as possible for breaking into my house via a living room window.

I heard a big bang at the end of my cul-de-sac. I quickly walked in that direction and saw a FERO garbage truck behind the abutting strip mall and returned to my break-in.

I pushed in the screen insert on its bottom edge and it fell easily. I cranked the casement window open as far as it would go and pushed a rocking chair to one side. With one leg in the window I had to sit on the frame (casement window... ouch) in order to spin the rocker and position it so I could get my foot firmly planted, albeit a tad precariously due to the inherent design of the rocker. On the second try, I managed to keep the rocker steady enough to break all the way in. Thankfully, the screen insert was no worse for the wear.

Before the ladder was stowed, I hid extra keys in a roof truss joint in Mum's garage.

So, how's your day so far?

Gawdamighty, talk about a definitive case of making someone ashamed because he can't help laughing at someone else's misfortune. I really do hope your day doesn't go downhill from there!

But what happens if the garage is locked, too, gnu?:-)

I remember following my daughter out to my car in the garage on a very cold, very snowy and windy day in Wyoming...think blowing and drifting snow, about 15-20 degrees Farenheit with a windchill of who knows how much below zero. I was in my pjs with a robe on and my Birkenstock sandals, no socks. I'd pulled the door into the house behind me so the cats wouldn't get out and to keep the cold from getting in. She drove off, waving goodbye. My Rog was already at work. I went to go inside, but when I tried to turn the knob it was locked! So was the front door. All I could do was stand there in the front of the garage and holler for help. I had no hidden keys and no other vehicle.

After about ten cold minutes, a neighbour going to work heard me, came over and brought me his BIG slippers and a blanket, then went off to call my Rog to come let me in. It was cold and scary, plus I was on oxygen, so rather tethered to the spot! Anyway, it turned out okay as they reached Rog (a small miracle in itself because he was so often out and about out of cellphone range at transmitters and such) and he came to my rescue. I did have a key in the garage after that and the garage did not have a lock, so it never happened again. Well, except for the time I had to crawl through my daughter's bedroom's basement window and drop down about four feet to her bed, but that was before the snowy day mishap.:-)

Hope your day improves, darlin'!

Never lock the garage. That's just more damage to repair.

One day last week my day started with the most hideous noise from the construction across the lane site behind my building. Maybe they were cutting concrete???? or metal or just making noise to wake everyone who was not awake (7.50 on a weekday - big noises aren't supposed to start until after 8)

It was such an ear splitting noise that I had to jump out of bed - no quiet even breaths to start the day - no stretches - nuffin' but a frantic scramble to get as far away from the noise as I could. Which is not very far in a 4 room apartment.

My building backs on to a laneway where residential & commercial garbage trucks rumble past every day. I'm about 30 feet from the laneway which also gets lots of large delivery trucks for the supermarket & shops, & trucks for the construction site, but they don't usually disturb me, even the glass recycling truck with the crash of a zillion bottles tipped into the truck rarely wakes me.

But this was different -

Of course, if you have valuables in the garage you should lock it but take proper security measures.

So, what was it, Sandra? Jackhammer?

It wasn't a jackhammer, Ebbie, because some (fool) in the next building started renovating his bathroom & kitchen a few days later & THAT was a jackhammer.

My neighbour identified the renovator - upstairs next door, across the little courtyard - & also commented unfavourably upon the noise in the construction site, but he didn't say what made it.

Another of Life's Little Mysteries (a very noisy one in this case)

Hope the day went uphill from there, Gnu.

Reminds me of a winter morning a number of years ago. I awoke at my usual time with my usual hangover at that time of my life. Jumped in the tiled shower to let the hot water beat me into semi-consciousness while the coffee perked. Every piece of tile let loose, seemingly at once, and rained down on me. Staggered out of the shower. Shortly stepped out onto the back stoop to take out a bag of garbage. It was bitter cold and the stoop was icy. Feet slipped out from under me. I levitated into a horizontal position and landed flat on my back, the wind knocked out of me. Saw stars. Once I could breathe again and ascertain no bones were broken, I crawled back into the house and finished getting ready for work. Stepped back out onto the rear stoop in order to wheel the trash out to the road for pick-up, completely forgetting about the ice. Repeated the levitation maneuver, complete with no wind and flickering stars. Crawled back up the steps, into the house, and then into bed. Set alarm for 8:00 am, when I called work and told them it was best for all concerned that I not get out of bed again that day.

I got up full of germs and anti biotics, fired up the antique car, met up with a dozen other old car nuts, went to a nursing home to show them the past which they all loved.
Got to looking around at those old folks in wheel chairs and walkers (Zimmer frames to the Brits), and realized, my problems are temporary, theirs are fatal.
Nothing like a bit of reality to get your attention.

My lodger knocked on my bedroom door at 0700 am. "Richard, I'm sorry (why, it wasn't his fault?) but there's a flood".

Damn right.   Not in the house, but two inches in the laundry room and a foot in my garage - which housed one of my PA rigs, some vintage Tannoy HiFi speakers, lots of other stuff and lodger's toy radio control cars (they run on compression ignition tiny motors and the fuel is HEAVY on methanol) and the gallon of such fuel - oh, and a junction box carrying 240V single phase mains to various places, one foot off the floor. Water had been washing in and out of the junction box most of the night. The trip had not tripped - it damn well should have done, it was an ELCB - so the fluctuations had fried the mother boards on two computers in the house and my office (full -size) photocopier.

At least I'd put wellington boots on before going to investigate, and when I reached in an unthinkingly hit the light switch there was NOT a big bang (yes, the power was still on so I guess the water was probably "live" - don't tell me it's impossible, I was in there) but the lights clearly showed the film of the toy car fuel on the top of the water.

Fortunately the insurance paid out (I think they were impressed when I told them I could fix a 1.5 kilowatt folded horn PA low frequency speaker the replacement price of which was GBP 7,000) but I still shiver a bit when I think what could have happened if I had: -

(a) stepped into the water in bare feet; or
(b) caused a spark by turning on the light.

The bleeding police had been in the street at 2 am and decided not to walk to my door to warn me as crossing the flood would have been too dangerous! Oh, nor did they 'phone me although everyone in the village knows my name and my number is in the book.

Incompetence is far too common Richard. At least 50% of people are below average intelligence. Add various other factors and chance and, well, there it is.

Arriving late to the thread but must say I (we and company)had a great day. Helped launch my brother's first c/d Friday evening with great success. Followed by getting to bed around 3 in the morning. Wonderful time and feeling great.

Gnu. When I first read where you hid your key I knew almost to the spot and was going to comment on it before Alice picked up on your slip. Oops!! not that kind of slip.
I sure can visualize you trying to get in.
Oh! and promise me this.........If you win the jackpot, get a very nice bottle of scotch and give me a call. I'll hope in my country Cadillac and be there in 10 hours. lets make it 8 .

My day started with the cat swatting my nose with his claws out. Fortunately, things have improved since then.

The day I locked myself out of the house while putting out the garbage was a classic of the genre. Of course, I was wearing a thin cotton nightie and Birkenstock sandals with bare feet. Of course, it was a week night in mid-November. I didn't know the neighbours, either -- and I don't recommend this as a way to get acquainted.

Fortunately, my brother had a key and came right over to rescue me. That was close one of the longest half hours of my life.

Cat... blood. I trained all three with a rather awful method. I grabbed them by the scruff, wiped the blood on my fingers, did that "open the mouth manouver", wiped my blood on their tongues, and slapped them. Not hard, but hard enough they learned not to scratch.

Awful, but it works.
