Thursday 2nd September, 7.30-8.00ish start guest starring Max from Mudcat (if we haven't got him lost on the Underground) and diverse others in the Back Bar (not the Stables Bar as previously) of the Black Lion Pub, Plaistow, E13.

Please come and Meet the Legend!

You're excused Terry!!!

This is an excellent opportunity to meet Max in his Whirlwind tour. We'll be seeing him several times too, but we'll try to get along!

I might even stop in myself if I ever get out of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. Is this a regular session or is much of what happens pre-programed?

The session is one of the 'occasionals' that we have to celebrate visiting folkies, and as such, there is no structure, no programme, only the edict to make music, enjoy yourselves and drink beer* from the bar.

Why does everything happen at once. Max at the Black Lion - Spider John Koerner at the Royal Oak in Lewes... Decisions, decisions...

The blues is everywhere.

Charley Noble, you'll be here too? Hope you can get along to the Black Lion if you're around, we're gathering to meet Max. Where else are you going to be while you're over?

Hil-

I'm still sorting out the schedule and will post details later this week but I arrive in London September 1 and leave September 23.

LTS-

Thanks for posting the directions for finding the Black Lion on the dedicated Black Lion thread. It occurred to me that there might be more than one Black Lion pub in the London area and not being in the right one might be an exciting experience but I'd rather be in the one with the Mudcat gang.

We'll try our best to come along too. Should be able to get a baby sitter but depends on what time I get home from work. Been a while since I met Max at the Getaway.

Session in the back bar Black Lion, Thursday 2nd September, a come-all-ye-and-just-do-it sort of thing kicking off at about 7.30. Pub is near the Plaistow Tube station, on the District Line. Come out of the station, turn right down the hill and keep going straight down the main road past 2 sets of traffic lights. The pub is on the left hand side of the road, almost opposite the Post Office sorting centre (big, nasty, 1950's concrete block) with a pedestrian crossing right outside it. There's parking space and several buses go past it. The pub itself is one of the oldest buildings in the area, painted white, with black trim. PM me for a phone number if you are worried about getting lost.

For those who've been to one of my sessions before - please note, this one is NOT in our usual Stables bar, but in the back bar of the main pub, door is round the side near the archway (you can also get in through the arch, keep going round to the right, first door up some steps). I'm afraid that it was built before wheelchairs were invented but if anyone needs assistance, I'm sure we can find a way!

I'm hoping there'll be a few more musicians there as it's the usual night for a session elsewhere in the area (but in a place that is an arse to get to by train). Manitas is trying to persuade them to come down to the Black Lion instead so we should have some Irish stuff to compensate for not getting Max over to the Emerald Isle.

Liz - I really must get along to see Max on 2nd. It's going to be a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. I'm coming up from Sussex by car - probably bright and early. Any inside info on the parking situation and, perhaps, where to get a bite to eat in the locality?

Will, if you're able to get to Leatherhead before 7pm, we can give you a lift to & from the Black Lion. Might be able to find something to eat & you could stay overnight in Max's room if you like. PM me....

The pub has a car park and there should be plenty of on=road parking nearby. There are a couple of takeaways nearby but not too many sit down restaurants within 10 minutes walk.

This is one of those times when I wish I still lived in Plaistow!.

Unfortunately, a quick trip down from deepest, darkest Lincolnshire is not possible. I've not been in the Black Lion since about 1978. I suddenly feel very old :-).

Have fun!

I hope I can make it (Last time there was when I met Joe Offer, I think)

Incidentally: My great-grandfather, who was German, had a Pork Butchers shop in Plaistow around 1901 (yes, a German Butcher). I must try and find the address somehow.

Having passed Max along to South Wales this afternoon, we are now looking forward to meeting him again at the Black Lion. I've got a few spare Escapade Tshirts, I'll bring them along!

I'm afraid we're going to have to give the Black Lion a pass and hope to see some of the London Mudcatters at Sharp's on September 21st.

We'll be resident in Greenwich and I don't get out of the National Maritime Museum until 5 pm. And I've found that it's not useful to do too much rushing around at the beginning of a major tour.

Give our best to the intrepid energizer Max.

Charley Noble

So we have Liz, Micca, Will Fly, Pavane, MGAS (and Richard?), Catherine Jayne and myself from the forum and several local non-Mudcatters. Anyone else?

So good to see Max again. A nice meet and session and our GURU host at her best looking after Max! We look forward to his return to us tomorrow, oops now today!
I do have a winge about this Pub though £3.40 for Bomadier and I think Max paid £2.60 for a pint of Coke ,prices way above nornal;
Being locked in the loo during drinking up time not a weclome for me!
I guess I can avoid by abcence in future such a shame though.

Alas, those prices are pretty reasonable compared with what you could pay in the middle of London, where a couple of weeks ago I was asked for £3.60 for a pint of beer... Last weekend I was charged £3.30 for less than a pint of ginger beer at the pub in Towersey. Being locked in the loo is not our fault, but we do know a song about it!

Still, a fine chance to have a chat, listen to some music and chill. Sorry I didn't sing anything but after a weekend at Towersey, it's amazing I still have any voice left!

Thanks all for coming, see you again soon!

Thanks to Hils and Richard for making me welcome in deepest Surrey and then driving me up the pub to meet Max and some of the gang. And - do you know - you're all just as I imagined you! It was a lovely evening of music and chat.

And that song we started in the car on the way home - about Richard being locked in the lavatory - will have to be worked on... :-)

What a great session at the Black Lion, thanks so much to Liz & Paul for setting it up and looking after Max so well. Lovely to have it as a proper 'session' and being able to chat with music around us. We enjoyed meeting Will Fly properly as we'd only met briefly once during Seaford Folk Club a while back. And Pavane too, brill!

Apologies for Richard's 'grumps', he's never happy with inflated beer prices, unsurprisingly!

So, Max will be let loose on London today, hope his assignations all go smoothly!

And thanks Micca & MGAS for those kind words - even though I made a complete ****-up of at least one tune. But good to meet everyone (again, in some cases).
