Good stuff Dick. These'd be great to hear live in a nice wee pub somewhere sipping a good stout and a strong whisky.

Note the lack of e in whisky, which was purely intentional.

What I could hear was great! The volume was so low I will have to try again when the AC and floor fan are off.

I liked your songs, Dick.

If it gets enough exposure, I think there is a good chance that Farewell to Humber and Dogger could get picked up on this side of England.

Perhaps I should add it to my list of songs to learn.

Nice songs, Dick, but I have to admit a slight puzzlement about the "Fisher Lads of Donegal".

Did the Donegal fishermen really sail all the way to New Zealand just to catch fish ? I mean, which fish were they trying to catch, and who was buying ?

Why didn't they just take the cod in the Atlantic, on their doorstep ? And how did they keep the fish fresh if they were away for three months? Salted in a barrel ?

I am assuming the song is referring to days gone by ...

This isn't a whaling song, is it ?

no its a modern song about what is happening now, check out killybegs website, its to do with quotas and fishing restrictions
".Four Killybegs -based trawlers are applaying for licences to fish in the Southern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile. The owners of the vessels say they are being forced to make the14,000 mile round trip through the Panma Canal because EU regulations have cut the number of days the can fish in the North Atlantic and North Sea.

Martin Howley one of the trawler owners said his boat - Atlantic Challenge - could fish his nets 200 miles west of the Cilean-Peruvizn border but could travel as far west as New Zealand. Martin said "We talk about Ireland being in a recession, but fishing has been in a recession for over five years now," he said. "There are still lots of negotiations to do. We hope to leave in June. It would take us a month to get there. It would take us a month to gt there. We'd like to fish for almost three months. We would probably said with half a crew and chnage crews when we get there If we are to survive we have to go out and fight for it."quote

I am not suggesting that this has been done consciously, but the tune of Farewell To The Humber and Dogger is very similar to the melody of a song that I really dislike called Thank God We're Surrounded By Water.

Do you say that you are using a traditional tune in your introduction, Dick? The level is so low on my player when you are speaking that I can hardly make out what you are saying.

Several websites that I have visited have Thank God We're Surrounded By Water tune and words composed by Dominic Behan (which I think is likely). The song seems to be popular in Newfoundland to slightly adapted words and the whole is credited to one Dick Nolan (which I think is unlikely).

in my introduction, i state that the tune is the limerick rake[tune traditional], which i am very sure is long before thank god we are surrounded by water.dominic probably used the tune too, as did MacColl.
i too dislike than god song imo, a negative insular song.
so it uses the limerick rake tune.

that should read , i dislike thank god we are surrounded by water, but the tune is not that but the Limerick rake.with an addition in the chorus

jack campin[ a scottish expert] had this to sayin another thread.

I first came across the title "The Limerick Rake" listed as the tune for "Too Many Daves", the song with words by Dr Seuss that was included on one of Anne Feeney's early recordings. (I think it might have been D.C. Fitzgerald's idea to put the tune and words together).

But as far as I was concerned I already knew the tune - it was "The Rakes of Kildare". Maybe a few notes different but not so anyone would notice.

Do people think of them as being two different tunes?
not sure what you are driving at, Vic , but I dont reckon i owe Dominc Behan any royalties

What a coincidence! I decided to spend this evening trying to catch up with the huge pile of albums that I have been asked to review when what should be coming out of my speakers but.... The Rakes of Kildare! Much faster, of course, played as a jig by a band, but still the A part is recognisably the tune used by Dominic and Dick. The B part starts to go in different directions but it is still basically the same tune.

ok, Vic, but as far as i am concerned it is the tune the limerick rake, which is a song i quite like, and this makes me feel good about the tune.
i prefer not to think of it as the sea between us because i dont like that particular song.

That is exactly what I did last Saturday, in Levis bar Ballydehob, at the singers club.

Very nice work Dick. Have you got a mate that plays the fiddle? I think it would fill out the sound a bit. That finger picked guitar is very quiet. That's how i ended up putting mine through an amp for videos. Still wasn't very good - it sounded louder than the voice then. I thought Ireland was full of fiddle players.

Anyway well done!

thanks Al, yes I have a partner who plays the fiddle, Thanks for your comments , point taken ,although voice should be louder than backing, I will bear your comment in mind .
