The Village Music Project (steered by John Adams & Chris Partington) gathers the handwritten tune books of country dance musicians from the 17th. century onwards & publishes them on the internet so that today's musicians can bring many beautiful but neglected tunes back to active life. The books often contain songs, hymns, psalms, military & classical music as well. Some music will be available in advance & there will be a chance to inspect original manuscripts held in Barbican House, Lewes Castle.

This is a Lewes Folk Festival event.

In the evening, choose from the following:

We still have places for this, and for other Lewes Festival events, but they are going fast.

We've got a few places left, and some unusual instruments already on the list: lute, flute, clarinet, trombone and Souzaphone. The Souzaphone made its debut in the Lewes Favourites tunes practice session last night; unfortunately we couldn't get a photo of it with the Angel of Death.

Those interested in VMP may wish to check out Boldwood, whose debut album 'Feet, Don't Fail Me Now' included many neglected tunes from 17th and 18th century manuscripts. The band is busy rehearsing material for the next album with new line-up of Becky Price (accordion), Matthew Coatsworth (fiddle/viola) and Miranda Rutter (fiddle/viola). You can find the debut album on Spotify, and new tunes on Myspace

Bryan TheSnail Creer has just persuaded the Sussex Archaeological Society to let workshop participants look at the Sussex music manuscripts they hold; they are nervous of letting them go off their own premises in the Barbican House, but it's only about five minutes' walk from the Elephant through the beautiful heart of Lewes. The weather forecast is good.

We can look at the books between 12.30 and 2.30 (our lunch break is 12.30 - 1. 30).
