G'day Fooles ...

I probably have a few photos of Ali Mills singing this - at this year's National Folk Festival, Canberra, Easter 2010.

I won't try linking them - as I gave Ali an undertaking not to allow use or distribution of images of her performing without running them past her for clearance ... and the photos don't have a soundtrack!

Ted Egan - now that he's back on the 'folk scene' ... after five years as "Administrator" of the Northern Territory (essentially "Governor" - except that it's a Territory, not a State ...) has also been instrumental in getting Ali onto the "Folk Scene" stages ... although she, and her family, have always been performers of a broad spectrum of Northern Territory traditions.

Regards,

Bob

Regard(les)s,

Bob

Bob

I'm not sure that I would dare attempt this in the dialect...

I'd love to see what she wold do with our Official National Anthem ... that 'Girt by Sea' bit would be interesting!

Love it at the end of the link where she says, in what sounds like perfect Received Pronunciation: "yes, that was real, real kriol"

Interestingly close to 'Creole' too.... :-)

That was what struck me, too...what she said at the end and the similarity to "Creole."

Well it is A creole. "Kriol" just being the kriol way of spelling creole. Not sure of the difference between a creole and a pidgin. I think a creole can develop out of a pidgin rather than vice versa.

A creole language, or simply a creole, is a stable language that has originated from a pidgin language that has been nativized (that is, acquired by children). The vocabulary of a creole language consists of cognates from the parent languages, though there are often clear phonetic and semantic shifts. On the other hand, the grammar often has original features but may differ substantially from those of the parent languages. Most often, the vocabulary comes from the dominant group and the grammar from the subordinate group, where such stratification exits. (Wikipedia)

I love the way Ali Mills performs this and I am so grateful for the lyrics. I've
been teaching the variant from the movie the Coca Cola Kid for decades, but this
is the coolest version of the old standby I've heard so I will teach my students the
chorus in Kriol and hopefully the second verse if we can master the chorus. The sheep bleating is delightful. Thank you so much for posting,
