Haha, ya'll...

Tghis goes back to my anti-war (vietnam) days when a bunch of us organized a "Puppy Burn"... Got about 1000 really heated up jocks to come out and then we tolt 'um that there weren't no puppy but that we did want to talk with 'um about the situation in Vietnam... It worked then and seems to be workin' now...

I loves all God's creatures... Especially little kitties an' puppies...

OK, Bobert, I was gonna post that this shenanigan isn't a new idea - that someone did this stunt back in the Viet Nam era to draw media attention to the fact that we were burning thousands of innocent (human) creatures. But I see you're owning up to that.
Didn't know you were part of the earlier plot, but it doesn't surprise me.

Yeah, if someone like TJ (appropriate initials, don't ya think?) in Gainesville can get international media attention for making an outrageous threat, it's good to know that sometimes people can do something very positive via the same tactic.

It's just about 55 years now, since I first heard about the blond....

...who fell asleep on the beach in her bikini. When she woke up to find her top missing, she crossed her arms over her bust and raced for the water. She passed a little boy, who shouted after her: "Lady, if you're going to drown those puppies, can I have the one with the brown nose?".

Speaking of hairless puppies - we were, won't we? - at my local humane shelter for the last several weeks is a pitiful thing going on.

There are two Chinese Crested dogs there: 1 1/2 years and 2 years old, in the prime of health. However, the male needs surgery for both luxating patellae immediately and the female needs one knee done- will probably have to have the other done in the foreseeable future.

I would have taken them both- one of them is so ugly she is cute - but there is no way I could justify the cost of the surgeries involved. I talked with my vet and he said that if he can do both knees at the same time, he thinks he can do the surgery for $3000. That's just for the one dog.

Anybody up for them? I think it is a shame that these delicate little dogs are being held in a concrete cage- and may have no way out except by euthanasia.

Doesn't it say it should be handed back to the King on discharge, Bobert?

When my dad died, I found his "driving licence" in his papers. A slip of paper that said basically that he'd managed to get the army lorry across the parade ground without hitting the Sar'nt major on the way so was fit to drive upon the Kings' Highways... the only ting resembling a driving test he ever took.

Ebbie - it's a sad story and one repeated many many times across the world. People get a pet and then discover just how much keeping that pet healthy is going to cost, so ditch the animal. One of my cats, Max, was run over when he was a kitten, taken to the vets, who was told to 'dispose of him', when his owners were informed as to how much his hip operation would cost. Luckily the practice nurse took pity on him, got him sorted and he lived 11 years with her and another 4 or 5 with me when she emigrated.

I am not a fan of genetically altered animals, the Chinese Crested and your Mexican 'airless being two of my least favourites, but I hate to see any animal suffer... I hope they find a sympathetic home soon.

So far as I know, the Chinese Crested is not 'altered'. From what I have read, rather than Chinese it is African. It got called Chinese only because Chinese traders procured them there.

The Shelter was told by the owners that they were moving south and couldn't take the dogs with them.

My hunch is that they came to the decision after learning how much it would cost to fix the problem. The good thing about the problem is that it tends to be a one-time thing- usually the surgeon opens up the knee and abrades the bone to make it deeper. Recovery time, however, is a protracted affair; we're talking about several months here.

Knowing nothing of the problem I was hoping that the surgery might be less invasive/costly than the ACL fix - which I have had done, and it cost just under $1500 - but instead it is much more serious. The vet said that the breeds whose hind legs tend to be bowed are the ones who have the problem.

Bobert, sorry for hijacking your puppy burn project (I keep seeing 'Puppy BARN')
