John Sebastian did a record some years ago with a group of folks, and it had a lot of new tunes. The record was done 'compilation style' with various writers and players contributing to the mix. There was a great song on this record, about a hangover, it started out soemthing like,

" I woke up early with the mornin' blues, I had an ache in my head that I wished I'd used ..." Does his song ring a bell with anyone?? I have searched for it, but cannot remember who wrote it, who else was on the album, or any of the iportant search criteria.

Also - the record had another great song ... I remember a great line,

"somebody said it was only, swingin' the world by the tail, skippin' over the white clouds, killin' the blues .."

Anyone remember this one? Lyrics? Who wrote it? Where can i find the recording?

From: Nathan in Texas

Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band did it. Evidently they got it from the singing of Uncle Dave Macon. His version follows:

14. I'VE GOT THE MOURNING BLUES Vo 5095

Been in business and I been in love.
I used to fly high like a turtledove.
Had the blues many a time,
Just a woman on a poor man's mind.

CHO: I got the mourning blues, oh, so bad!
Honey, come and kiss me. They're the worst I've ever had.

Ashes to ashes and it’s dust to dust,
Show me a woman that a man can trust.
Nickel's worth of grease and a dime's worth of lard,
I would buy them all but the times is so hard. CHO.

There ain't no use of me a-working so hard,
For I got a woman in the white folks’ yard.
She brings me meat and she brings me pie.
Me eats some of everything the white folks buy. CHO.

She brings me chicken and she brings me cake.
You just ought to see me lick that plate.
A big honey biscuit and a mutton chop
Will make a nigger's lips go flippy-flop. CHO.

Lassus a fellow right over there,
He's got blue eyes and he's got black hair.
Talking to his sweetheart, she looks so neat,
She calls him honey, and he calls her sweet. CHO.

There stands a feller right over yonder,
He looks just like he wants to ponder.
Look at that hair all around his mouth,
Like he swallered a mule and left the tail a-hanging out. CHO.

KILLING THE BLUES - Roly Salley

Leaves were falling, just like embers, colors red and gold
They set us on fire burning just like moonbeams in our eyes

Chorus:
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
Now I am guilty of something
I hope you never do
Because there is nothing any sadder
Than losing yourself in love.

Chorus:
And then you've asked me just to leave you
To set out on my own and get what I needed
You want me to find what I've already had.

Chorus: X2

The chord progression is: E Esus4 E Esus4 E E7 Asus2, E E sus4 B7 E A

Probably easier to read than above. Just scroll down to Shawn Colvin #1 Killing The Blues.

Hope this helps. Res

These lyrics are a little more complete.

KILLING THE BLUES

Leaves were falling, just like embers
In colors red and gold they set us on fire
Burning just like a moonbeam in our eyes
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
Now I'm guilty of something
I hope you never do because there is nothing
Sadder than losing, yourself in love
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
Now you ask me, just to leave you
To go out on my own
And get what I need to
You want me to find what I've already had
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues

Joe that's a differen song

Traditonal arrangement by
Auldridge, Gaudreau, Coleman and Klein
© 1993 AGCK Music/ Mountainside Music (BMI)

Well I woke up early with those morning blues
Had an aching head that I wished I could lose
And I looked in the mirror, nearly died of fright
Those morning blues, ten times worse than last night

I got the morning blues
Hurt so bad
Honey come and love me
They're the worst I ever had

Well, a nickel's worth of grease
And a dime's worth of lard
I would buy more but the times is too hard
And I don't see why I have to work so hard
I can live off the chickens in my neighbor's yard

I got the morning blues
Hurt so bad
Honey come and love me
They're the worst I ever had

Well I've been in the army and I've been in love
I used to fly high like a turtle dove
And I've had these blues for just the longest time
It's just some boy on this poor girl's mind

I got the morning blues
Hurt so bad
Honey come and love me
They're the worst I ever had

I got the morning blues
Hurt so bad
Honey come and love me
They're the worst I ever had

As sung by Linda Ronstadt

I like Kevin Holland's idea for a "Student Blues". It would begin "Woke up this afternoon..."

Martin Mull got there, circa 1973:

I woke up this afternoon, and I saw both cars were gone.
I woke up this afternoon, and I saw both cars were gone.
I felt so low down deep inside, I threw my drink across the lawn.
