Doc Rowe archive on the move

At last, the Doc Rowe Archive has found a decent base – in Whitby. It is being transferred on Wednesday from Burton Street in Sheffield to The Ropery in Whitby where Doc has secured a business unit in what was the Old hitby Work House […appropriate, I hear you say!]
The new facility offers a more realistic space and will enable regular and concentrated work on the collection. Digitisation of one section of the collection has just secured funding and the website is being expanded to include new picture galleries, audio and video clips along with a database of contents.

The move from Burton Street in Sheffield to Whitby is happening this week on Wednesday [ 6th Oct]. Any help will be gratefully accepted – anticipated time at Burton Street, Sheffield will be around 10.30/11.00 or in Whitby at the Ropery, Green Lane at around 3.30. Access at both ends is [happily!] on a level and only a few yards to (or from) the van from (or to) the exit/entrance.
There are, of course, loads of archive boxes of negatives, photographs, tapes, cassettes, videos, journals etc. most are about 12x15x12 so reasonably small and light BUT lots of them…. many hands would make light and speedy work, probably as a chain and any box moving shanties might be applauded!

If you can help in any way you can contact Doc on doc@docrowe.org.uk or phone 07747 687734.

Wish those locations were nearby, I'd be volunteering like a shot! Good news to hear that it is actually happening. :-)

Very many thanks to everyone who came and helped in the move last Wednesday.
It actually happened – thanks especially to sterling work from Allan and John [Aka Whitby pirates] from Neil's Removals, Whitby who really had quite a shock when they saw the amount of boxes, files and cabinets in Sheffield. I think they imagined 'the archive' to be a few cupboards of files and papers. Clearly my initial description of the contents must have sounded a little exaggerated … it wasn't!!

Although we did fill the floor space in the new premises, I've since put up library shelves around the walls and created [just!] enough space for the next load. Yes, needless to say, it's going to take another furniture van load to clear the rest; this comprises mainly video tapes, LPs and cabinets of transparencies.
So, if anyone has an hour to spend on Monday – the same time sequence as last week – we'd be overjoyed to see them as it'll speed things up considerably.
I shall be putting details on the website very soon but, in the meantime, thanks again to those who helped and also the many mails of support and good wishes – they do mean a lot.
Thanks
Doc

Wish I could help Doc. But, it's great to know that you've got a permanent home for such a collection. And in Whitby too! Result!
Congratulations...Hope you're good with a drill and a screwdriver!!
Regards Ralphie

It's really great that you've found a permanent home for the archive, Doc - you're a one-man national treasure.

Well done Doc and sorry we couldn't help physically as we were preparing for Lewes weekend festival.

Folks, the new archive premises is a great step forward but it's going to cost a fair bit more than the premises in Sheffield.

The Doc Rowe Collection Support Group    exists to raise the money to keep the archive housed and to help Doc in his work. We need more sponsors and if you feel able to join us in supporting Doc's work, we'd be very grateful.

Some people join our "Buy Doc A Pint" scheme and donate the price of a pint of beer every month. One off donations help as well, however large or small.

Although Doc is most definitely a National Treasure, he's not yet supported by any branch of the nation's treasury. Long term we are trying to rectify this scandalous neglect but in the meantime your support would be welcome.

Click here for a description of the archive and here to see how to contribute.

A phone call from Doc yesterday confirmed that Straw Bear will be reinstated on the calendar. Phew, we thought we had upset him. His website is really worth a visit. Gan Canny Brian
