Old lady, after lecture on this at planetarium:
"Sir, when did you say it was all going to come to an end?"
Astronomer: "Oh, about 3½ billion years."
Old lady,: "Oh, thank goodness! I thought you said 3½ million years!"

MAY? come to an end? of course it will. Science tells us that the sun will burn itself out in about 4 billion years.
Maybe by then the democrats will be back in power.

gnu, when I read the title of this thread I thought maybe you'd lost your watch.

The notion that the sun burning out is the end of everything is surely a little bit parochial.

Yes, there are trillions of other suns out there, after all.

I once started a What Went Big Bang? thread which ran&ran [sort of]. What I want to ask re this one is, what noise will it make? When it goes Boom or Pfft or Whimper or whatever, where will it all go? What will come after it? And in what sense is the end of stuff [whatever it may be] the end of time?

As Ben Elton remarks in one of his novels, these are the sort of questions that only stupid people ask. So that's me put in my place, Prof Hawking! Eh?

Without an observer, where would the Universe be? ;-)

To extrapolate further from that...without you and me and the rest of us sentient beings here to observe it, everything would cease to be!

Now prove me wrong. ;-D (recent advances in physics do suggest that I might just be right)

Careful! They HATE quantum mechanics in this forum because I was the first to talk about it.

Ah, but you overlook Heisenberg's Uncertainly Principle! By observing it, you've already changed it. Werner always has the last word.

Josep:

You are revealing yourself as an overblown egoist, amigo. There have been multiple discussions about quantum entanglement, wave function, QM. eigenstates and other bizarre aspects of the very tiny (although we had not yet gotten to discussing your prick) in many threads on this forum long before you ever graced us with your august presence.

Did any Mediaeval theologians actually discuss how many angels could dance (or otherwise accommodate themselves) on a pinhead? Even if they didn't, I've often thought that such a question has about as much relevance to anything useful as this kind of speculation by all sorts of astronomers, physicists, and the like, but it keeps them in research grants just as these mediaeval boys were kept in good boiled capons while the peasantry struggled to survive.

♫Time has made a change in the shape of space.
Time had made a change in the Human race.
And although it's something that none will see,
Time will fade and die, you see.....

I think we have to distinguish between the end of "time" and the end of "duration." The last is defined as eternity plus 1, or the period you wait for someone to pay back the fiver they borrowed.

We will know ithat it is the end of time when we hear this:

It's time Gentlemen please
It's time we were no longer here
It's time gentlemen please
I'ts time to drink up your beer
We've had a few stories, some dancing and song
Well hold hands together, as we say so long...
...
Now It's time gentlemen please.
