Folk Singers who Have Died

17 Oct 10 - 02:10 AM (#3008848)
Subject: Folk Singers who Have Died
From: GUEST,Guest - Lindy

I'm trying to come up with a list of well known or fairly well known folk singers that I can think of who have passed away. For the purpose of this thread I am only looking for artists who were primarily involved with folk or considered a folk singer although they may have played other music during their career.

1). Sandy Denny
2). Tim Hart
3). Jim Croce
4). Kate Wolf
5). Mary Travers (of Peter, Paul & Mary)
6). Stan Rogers
7). Mimi Farina-Baez (Joan Baez's younger sister)
8). John Denver
9). Dan Fogelberg
10).Odetta
11).Kate McGarrigle
12).Eva Cassidy
13).John Martyn
14).John Stewart
15).Harry Chapin

These are 15 names that came to mind right away but I know there are more folkies that have left us.

What is Mr Smith doing killing off Pete Seeger [note spelling], please?

Amos's question is of course a most pertinent one. Dealing only with people I have met, let's take as an example Harry Cox. If he wasn't dead, he would be 125 years old. Peter Bellamy, on the other hand, would only be 66, Sandy Denny 63, &c. But Alex Campbell 85. So where did OP envisage the parameters being set?

Has Isla Cameron been mentioned? Or Dominic Behan?

CLICKY.

Scroll down. Great pictures of Stan in action, most taken by Sally Ashford. One photo is a street scene (a bit fuzzy), including Walt Robertson and Merritt Herring, both of whom are no longer with us.

Further down is a photo taken of the "grand finale" of the Seattle Coffeehouse Reunion ("Geezer's Concert") at the 2003 Northwest Folklife Festival.

Not everyone who sang in the coffeehouses during the late 50s and through the 60s were there. Some live in other parts of the country, and some have passed on.

There are some great song fests going on Somewhere. . . .

Meantime, living performers get listed, along with some musicians who can't be called folk by any definition. Weird.

Allan s. Thanks for correcting me re. Tom Paley. I had heard many years ago that he had died, but never followed it up--it's great to know he's still alive and performing.

One very obscure deceased folk singer who was an incredible guitarist, songwriter, singer, and entertainer was a fellow named John Antle, who used to play around the Edmonton Folk Club in the early 1970's, and then around Toronto. He also apparently played in folk clubs in San Francisco. Is anybody familiar with him?

Actually, Doc Watson is still alive, though his son and fellow musician Merle Watson died tragically in a farming accident in the mid-1980s.

To this necrology I would add Paul Clayton (d. 1967), and Hoyt Axton (d. 1999).

V distressed to discover from another, just refreshed, thread that an old acquaintance, Adrienne Johnston, has been dead for nearly 30 years, possibly as a consequence of domestic violence. I didn't know her well, only distantly as a critic gets to know a performer generally; but I am oddly sad to find that someone I knew at all has been dead for all this time without my knowing. It is an odd, upsetting feeling, as I am sure will be understood.

My wife died on operating theatre table for two minutes. Then they revived her. You could start another thread or two. Folksingers who died permanently. Folksingers who died temporarily. Folksingers who sing choruses that nobody joins in, and usually die on their arse.

This is a thread, whose title only tells part of the story.

And several names on the list were bogus or jokes.

Miskin Man,
Thanks for doing the alphabetized list. But I don't see Kate Wolf's name on it, or Stan Rogers's either.

I'd also add Jill Jackson Miller, who co-wrote "Let There Be Peace On Earth" with Sy Miller, whom she later married. Not sure if they're considered "folk," but I guess it depends on how broadly you define "folk."

I would also add Miriam Makeba to the list.

I was always under the impression that Old Man Mose was a name from a song title. (I remember that Louis Armstrong, Betty Hutton, and Manhattan Transfer - among others - recorded it.)

And somehow, both Big Lists managed to omit Woody Guthrie! (Though he was mentioned in an earlier post in this thread.)

I was going to include Woody and even Hank Williams (yes, he's thought of as "country," but an awful lot of folk singers do his songs all the time). Woody would've been almost 99 if he were alive, though, but Hank would be just 87, so maybe I should have included him.

I started reading this thread because I'm still reeling from 2009 when we lost a LOT of folk singers. Already mentioned were Sandy Paton, Mike Seeger & Mary Travers who all died last year.
I did not see the names of Bess Lomax Hawes, Richie Schulberg, Mary LaMarca, Susan Contento (in NYC)who died last year.
I'm also going to drift from the thread's focus to share my pleasure that three singers who seemed desperately ill in December 2009 are still with us, Jean Ritchie, Jerry Epstein, & Ray Fisher.

Coulda sworn Frank Proffitt was on the list. I know he was at one time. DK about Tom Paley's current viability status, but he was mentioned by someone.
I'll probably update the list when we get another couple dozen names to add. (I hope that won't be many who recently join those ranks.)

And James Copper whom someone else listed would have been 175. And I doubt if John England would have been a lot younger. So why exclude The Boi Harry?

And with that, I'd like to mention Elizabeth Knepp (or Knipp). Would be pushing 400 by my reckoning.

There are hundreds of "Obit" threads in the forum that may be for folk singers (folk musicians), but there are too many to sort through at once.
Here, for starters, are a few for people whom I don't think have been added to our list yet and who, as far as I know, may fit the category to some degree:

Alright, I'll pick just one more out, even though she would be well over age. Cecilia Costello is now dead. I point that out because once before in her lifetime she was reported dead in the local paper. A neighbour came round, knocked on the door, and when Cecilia opened it, asked the classic question: Mrs Costello, you're not really dead, are you?

Please include Win Stracke and Archie Green in this list. They were both important.

I think that this thread is motivated by the fact that we lost one of the greatest of all,
Doc Watson, recently.

This mass obituary emphasizes that it's important to keep the tradition of folk music
alive in whatever way we can since many of the former carriers of the tradition have passed.

Is John Herald still alive? Or John Stewart with the KT?

Pete Seeger is ninety-two strong and as Springsteen has said, he has "outlived the bastards" such as McCarthy and his detractors. America's "tuning fork" is still resonant.

It has been fascinating reading this thread. Some thought it was a farce and didn't take it seriously. Those of us who were folkies before the folk music revival happened regard names of the deceased with tremendous interest. After all, they were folks we listened to and some of them in person, and we loved traditional folk music heart and soul. It was our very life. I said once that I would never read the newspaper obituaries (sounded so morbid), but I now do that quite regularly. If I see someone I know (knew), I read the entire obit. The rest of you may realize this when you are old and gray. What surprises me are those reported as gone who were a lot younger than me, I thought.

Astonishing that none of the following have been listed:

Sonny Terry, Roscoe Holcomb, Dock Boggs, Riley Puckett, Tommy Jarrell, Uncle Dave Macon, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Maggie Hammons, Cisco Houston, Big Bill Broonzy, Hobart Smith.

These have all been around in my lifetime, and were all Great.

As Waddon Pete points out, a lot of the musicians listed or not listed here have been mentioned on his In Memoriam page.Sonny Terry, Cisco Houston, and Big Bill Broonzy have been mentioned at least twice on this thread.

I have done more than my share to perpetuate this dreary thread. I declare it to be out of control. Somebody get a stick and kill it.

So, has this entire list been compiled into one master list? I keep scrolling down and down..and down....a long way to go.

If I see a thread that doesn't interest me I find it easy to just not click on it, but go on to something that does catch my interest. No one will find every thread to their liking, but why add a post complaining about how boring you find the thread or try to add fake names that you think are funny.   If it doesn't appeal, move on to something else. Obviously, some folks are interested.

Checked back on this old thread to research something. Feel moved to add one of my favourite quotations, tho it comes from a book which overall I do not greatly care for -- Laurence Sterne's 'Tristram Shandy', 1759-67:

"We had a fat, foolish scullion ... Master Bobby is dead, said Obadiah; he is certainly dead! –– So am not I, said the foolish scullion."

Not so foolish that time, IMO.

And so am not I!

But who is to add since last entry nearly two years ago?

Thank you. Hadn't heard of John Renbourn's death.

Margaret Barry died in 1989 [see wikipedia], John McCormack in 1945, Kirsty MacColl in 2000, so should all have been listed before. Thanks for catching up with these.

It may be worth noting that the "In Memoriam" thread exists to enable Mudcatters to research those folk artists who have died.
