Awwwwwwwwww...

Start him in squash early (convince the younguns, that is)... it is the most physically demanding sport on earth save warfare.

I wish my knees had held up... I was awesome on the court... every day and 4 to 5 hours in a row at least once a week back in the day. Maybe that's why my knees went. Perhaps I should have ATE more squash.

In any case, that is one cute squasher... HEY... squash recipes anyone? My bro used to do his in the nuke... simple stuff and it was deeelicious.

I never played Squash, but I did play handball (I know Spaw is going to run with this one) Man your hands hurt smacking that thing ... For those who know know it is really is a sport where you hit a little very hard ball against the wall ... you have a very thin leather glove ...

I also love squash. I take an acorn squash, cut it down the middle, scoop out the seeds and place both halves cut-side down on a greased foiled baking sheet. I used olive oil for this. Nothing else. Bake it at 425o for an hour and 15 minutes. It caramelizes the edges and the whole thing is wonderful just like that, scooped out of the skin with a spoon.

I just did that squash thing for supper. After baking it, I flipped it over and added a mixture of maple syrup, cinnamon, butter and nutmeg to pour into the cavity.
Delish!

Yes, I was pretty keen on squash and fives (Eton fives, not Rugby fives) when younger but my ankles were more of a problem than knees.

Nowadays it's more a "dilute to taste" orange flavoured drink. I never did quite see what there was to like about those funny mini-pumpkin things that mostly taste of nothing. What's that US folk song?

"Never marry a teacher
And here's the reason why
She blows her nose on cornbread
And calls it pumpkin pie".

I volunteer at the local food bank. We have those really huge blu-ish grayish Hubbard Squash to give away but hard to find takers-they look a bit gnarly, it's true, but they are most delicious when cut in half, scooped out and baked in the oven for a while-good thing for a northwest thanksgiving table along with a big salmon and other local yummies.

Seth,
Maybe the people you're offering the squash to don't have ovens?

Dan,
Dom is adorable! He's grown so fast. He must be almost 6 months old now?

We are starting to get more squashes in our supermarkets in the UK. The only one I have tried so far is the butternut squash which has a lovely buttery flavour I like it a lot. I would be interested to hear of anymore varieties and how to cook them. I have been baking the butternut squash in the oven without anything else just a bit of oil but will try cinnamon next time maybe as a Christmas vegetable sounds delicious.

Hubbard squash is among my favorites. I think what is daunting about them, besides the usually gray-green color and the warty skin, is the size. Most are huge! Just one could feed a family of four for at least a couple of days if they ate nothing else. For those who have never seen one, picture an ugly (American) football about a foot and a half long to two feet long and eight or ten inches in diameter. I never weighed one but guess at ten pounds for an average. They simply look too big to eat. But once you get past that notion, you are in for a treat. Delicious! I used to make a cream soup with Hubbard squash, cream, salt, pepper, and maybe a dash of cayenne and/or nutmeg all blended together. Just great!

Zucchini is good fried, breaded or unbreaded. Quarter inch slices work best. Yellow squash is good that way too. A sweet desert bread made from zucchini is delicious but I've never actually baked any myself. Acorn squash is delicious prepared the way it is described above. I put honey on it. Spaghetti squash is a great lower carb alternative to actual spaghetti. Bake it in the oven and then tease out the strands with a fork. Looks much like thin gauge spaghetti and can be served with a tomato sauce. Of course the best use of squash is pumpkin pie spiced with nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon and lots of ground clove. A friend of mine makes pies out of other types of squash as well. Squash is a wonderful vegetable with many varieties and great versatility. Very nutricious. The "Three Sisters" of Native American agriculture were squash, maize(corn) and beans, all planted together. As the cornstalks grew, the bean vines used them as a stake and the squash vines spread out along the ground. I've heard it said that this method kept the soil from wearing out because what one plant depleted from the earth the others replenished.

Butternut squash, red-pepper and onion soup with a scattering of chilli flakes in there. Delicious.

I find squash sweet enough without adding additional sweetener. I grow butternut squash and my most common method of preparation is to peel and cut it into chunks of about 11/2 inch, toss in EVOO, sprinkle with salt and pepper and roast in a hot (475°F) convection oven 'till slightly browned. If I'm roasting a chicken or turkey I just put the chunks on the rack aside the bird.
