How about some British Catter Music?

From: olddude

Well being an old US country boy I am well versed in Cowboy, Hillbilly, and just plain old folk. I freely admit I don't listen or know much British Folk Music. The ones I have heard here on mudcat were really good. Anyone want to post some British Trad or Irish or any other over the pond place. How about some Aussie? etc ... Just trying to open my ears up to some new stuff that I don't know very well and don't normally listen to

How about it

What is really fun is I have not heard even one of these songs before. Great music and some fine performance. you people gotta stop hiding. It is really nice to hear this and see the performances. Many people don't post because they are afraid someone is going to think they are just doing the self promotion of some other silly nonsense. They forget that many people here would love to listen. Like most of us we get caught up in our own flavor of music and forget to branch out. If we play the blues we tend to listen to mostly blues, likewise with Western or Appalachian ... I have been trying to branch out in my listening and realize how much great music I missed. Keep them coming. For some folks this is the first time I heard you play and I have been delighted at what I am hearing.

Old Dude - you are too kind. I always think Somewhere in America is the best track, although I do like the guitar solo in The Lady Came from Baltimore. And if that sounds conceited it isn't meant to be - I'm just the voice and accompanying guitar. My son Philip played the bass, mandolin, keyboards, electric guitar and 'strings.'

"When Fishes Fly" a lovely song and excellently performed by Mary Humphreys and Anahata.

I heard it sung this summer by a 14 year old girl who sang it with an assurance and maturity which belied her years. Absolutely wonderful, it brought a lump to my throat. To hear someone of her age singing a traditional folk song and singing it so well was magical.

Olddude, I take your point about the worries we have about self promotion - "vanity publishing" as it is sometimes referred to. I think it is something in the British Character. I was brought up on the view that you should not be too "forward" but let your actions speak for you. I am also the worlds worst salesman.

So, gritting my teeth, here is a link to my You Tube channel. I've already posted some of the more recent stuff earlier in the thread.

Wav
"The "wondrous cross" is a lovely song.   I think you do a fine job when you play the recorder as I cannot play a note on one and envy anyone that can play anything on one of them. Just as a gentle suggestion, maybe a little work on your phrasing with the vocals. You drop a bit here and there ok. Sometime it is just simple timing .. I think it could make the songs much stronger. These are just simple suggestions as I am no expert by any means. I appreciate you putting your music out there. Thank you as I have not heard any of these songs before

Johnny Cope

Johnny Cope is possibly better known as a song written in 1745 celebrating the defeat of the Government forces under Gen. Sir John Cope by the Jacobite Army of Bonny Prince Charlie at the battle of Prestonpans.

The tune has also been widely used a basis for sets of fiddle variations in Scotland and the North of England and there are several manuscripts with such sets of variations. It has also made its way to Ireland where it is played as a six strain hornpipe.

My own effort, played on Tenor Recorder, is based on a four strain set from a Manuscript from Co. Durham dated about 1850 to which I have added two variations of my own to make a six strain set.

Namely Mr & Mrs Sooz (Stitherum), Backwoodsman, Boston Bass (Akmeds Camel), Oaklet (Cara) GoldenGob (Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher), Wacko Jacko (Ploughmens Bunch), Big Al Whittle, Rockhen (Helian Keys).

Some of the other artist's are

WinterWilson
Gwenda & Terry Cater
Mike Wray
Paul Dickinson & Angela King
The Pete Wray Band
Dave & Julie Evardson
Monkey's Orphan

Sorry about people who didn't get on the edition. However many thanks to all the artist's who are on this CD.

I hope mudcatters will support this excellent charity.

Please Post on here if you want to pre order a CD. People in other countries will be able to purchase the CD but P&P will be diffeernt.

We hope to have CD's available at most of the folkclubs in Lincolnshire, so if you go to any of them, you can save P&P, by purchasing at the club.

You can also come to the special event at Faldingworth on July 3rd 2011 and buy the CD. http://www.yellowbellies.me.uk/

Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music?

Nice playing Jon and good choice of tunes.

I had problems when I started recording myself, but as time goes on I am getting less nervous and am able to get things right with fewer "takes".

I find if I don't get it right after the first two or three times, I usually get worse and worse. Then I find it best to pack up and try again some other time or record something else. It also helps to be comfortable with your material and be prepared to record at a slightly slower tempo on quick tunes as I find I am then less prone to mistakes.

13 Jun 11 - 05:44 PM (#3170108)
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music?
From: GUEST,Jon

Thanks for the advice. I've certainly noticed things getting worse and worse...

When I have a go, I do try to pick on what I think are my safest tunes and generally go for fewer notes than I'd perhaps attempt if in a session - although that can depend on mood, how fast a tune is going, whether (rarely) I've wound up leading the tune, etc.

Here are some songs I've sung; mostly but not exclusively traditional. (To be precise, one each by MacColl, Peter Bellamy, Lal & Mike Waterson and, er, me - the rest are all trad.)

I'll second Richard's plug for his Liverpool folk songs site - a terrific resource and some fine singing.

One other thing I thought of. I find having dots/words in front of me when I am recording helps. It removes one more stress factor. After all, no one need know.

Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music?

I can imagine that being helpful for some but I'm afraid I'm not a sight reader. (stumbling block when I've tried is timing. I seem unable to put say knowing one note is twice as long as another into practice).

Banks of the Sweet Primroses

Faster than usually sung, and with a bit of a different tune from the one considered "standard" but that's the way I learned it!

Here's 52 Folk Songs: my folk-song-a-week site, now in its 11th week. I've been putting up more than one song a week, so there are currently 27 songs up there, 17 of them traditional.

For the first six weeks I just recorded myself singing unaccompanied. Since then I've got more into accompaniment, using the magic of multitracking: five of the last thirteen songs have been accompanied in one way or another (flute, whistle, reed organ), while the latest song to appear features me duetting with myself.
