I freely admit I don't listen or know much British Folk Music. The ones I have heard here on mudcat were really good. Anyone want to post some British Trad or Irish or any other over the pond place. Great music and some fine performance. you people gotta stop hiding. It is really nice to hear this and see the performances. Many people don't post because they are afraid someone is going to think they are just doing the self promotion of some other silly nonsense. They forget that many people here would love to listen. Like most of us we get caught up in our own flavor of music and forget to branch out. If we play the blues we tend to listen to mostly blues, likewise with Western or Appalachian ... I have been trying to branch out in my listening and realize how much great music I missed. Keep them coming. For some folks this is the first time I heard you play and I have been delighted at what I am hearing. |

I heard it sung this summer by a 14 year old girl who sang it with an assurance and maturity which belied her years. Absolutely wonderful, it brought a lump to my throat. To hear someone of her age singing a traditional folk song and singing it so well was magical. Olddude, I take your point about the worries we have about self promotion - "vanity publishing" as it is sometimes referred to. I think it is something in the British Character. I was brought up on the view that you should not be too "forward" but let your actions speak for you. I am also the worlds worst salesman. I think you do a fine job when you play the recorder as I cannot play a note on one and envy anyone that can play anything on one of them. Just as a gentle suggestion, maybe a little work on your phrasing with the vocals. You drop a bit here and there ok. Sometime it is just simple timing .. I think it could make the songs much stronger. These are just simple suggestions as I am no expert by any means. I appreciate you putting your music out there. From: Tootler Johnny Cope Johnny Cope is possibly better known as a song written in 1745 celebrating the defeat of the Government forces under Gen. Sir John Cope by the Jacobite Army of Bonny Prince Charlie at the battle of Prestonpans. The tune has also been widely used a basis for sets of fiddle variations in Scotland and the North of England and there are several manuscripts with such sets of variations. It has also made its way to Ireland where it is played as a six strain hornpipe. My own effort, played on Tenor Recorder, is based on a four strain set from a Manuscript from Co. Durham dated about 1850 to which I have added two variations of my own to make a six strain set. |

I had problems when I started recording myself, but as time goes on I am getting less nervous and am able to get things right with fewer "takes". I find if I don't get it right after the first two or three times, I usually get worse and worse. Then I find it best to pack up and try again some other time or record something else. It also helps to be comfortable with your material and be prepared to record at a slightly slower tempo on quick tunes as I find I am then less prone to mistakes. |

Since then I've got more into accompaniment, using the magic of multitracking: five of the last thirteen songs have been accompanied in one way or another (flute, whistle, reed organ), while the latest song to appear features me duetting with myself. |
