It's a far more stressful city to live in than it used to be, that's for sure. That's why so many people have moved out to places like Newmarket, Barrie, Orillia, and other smaller cities and towns.

Come to Orillia! It'll thrillya....chillya...and fulfillya....

and then finally......killya! ;-)

i have to say that tronna is the nastiest, bitterest, meanest place i've ever been.

am i ever glad i moved to new brunswick.

worst gossip i've ever experienced. people have a need to destroy and smear those they dislike--and they can dislike for next to nothing. i had to sue people three times for slander or libel, something i never had to do anywhere before. it made me some cash but who on gods green earth prefers to lie and pay out thousands of bucks to telling the truth and eating a little humble pie--trontonians

Toronto is a big, modern city, and as such, is populated by the full panoply of human types. Those who go there to visit or live will have various sorts of experiences: some will have a wonderful time; some will have a terrible time. Do bear in mind, however, that most of the people you encounter there will probably be products of places other than Toronto - that is, of those places that produce such superior specimens of humanity ....

Bottom line is human beings ain't constructed for big city living.

I grew up in London, and I couldn't get out fast enough. I reckon the scorch marks on the road East are probably still there.

I go back there about twice a year, usually taking my grandkids to see the sights.

Left to myself, I would never bother with the place.

Subject: RE: BS: Tronna sucks.
From: Little Hawk

I think it would have been a very good idea if society had originally been organized around a couple of simple regulations regarding urban development:

1. No city shall be allowed to exceed 100,000 inhabitants within its given metropolitan area...which must then be bounded by a given area of rural land....agricultural or natural. In other words, don't allow cities bigger than 100,000 people.

2. Every metropolitan area must set aside 1/3 of its land for green areas...meaning parks, forests, and open land.

This would, of course, interfere with the desires of the business community to make every last dollar they can out of a place...but I'm envisioning a society where things aren't done for the money, they're done to secure the most desirable end result in terms of the general quality of life for everyone involved.

It would be nice, wouldn't it? ;-)

I only go to Toronto when absolutely necessary, although I loved the place back in the late 60s to mid-70s when I was in my 20s. Most of the young people from this small town go to Toronto shortly after finishing high school, because that's where the jobs and opportunities are.

****

Now I'm trying to imagine how one person can possibly get into situations where they must sue other people for slander or libel...on three separate occasions????? Good lord. I have never even considered suing anyone for anything. I had a father who wasted his time and money suing a variety of other people over various business disagreements he had with them...and WHAT a waste of time and money it all was! The lawyers got rich. Everybody else lost out. My father got into those situations because he was consumed with the idea that he was 100% RIGHT and others were 100% WRONG (not to mention just downright awful and evil people who really deserved punishment) and those others must PAY DEARLY for being so wrong as to not see things his way. ;-) Lawyers love people who think that way. It's their bread and butter. They drink the blood of such people. Having seen the utter folly of that punitive and revenge-seeking approach to life, I very much doubt I will ever spend my time and money suing anyone over anything.

And I don't think it has anything to do with Toronto. It has to do with a state of mind.

apparantly i wasn't signed in--i compare to other cities and i travelled a lot . i've never run into the cliqueishness and even cultishness anywere else as bad as tronna. its safe and there is a lot to do, but man that need to hate based on percieved class and cool is un rivaled anywhere i've been. and i've lived in calgary and new york .

montral is way more laid back, as is san fran and vancouver. you can make a living from music in tronna but after a while one starts to wonder if its worth it.

the busking was great, but the ontario born buskers almost to a man expected special treatment and had an additude of entitlement in all things. i used to try to negotiate with them but man they think they are holyier than any one. the immigrants are musc easier to get along with.

and as i said i was gobsmaked by the people who posted on the internet false allegations of mental illness and criminality. they really thopught i was picking on them unfairly taking them to court and forcing them to print retractions and pay damages--i really have never met people that snobish combined with cliqueish before.

i have had people not like me before but they normally ignore me, but a decade campaign of slander(in one case) the sense of "specialness and entitlement " is unparralleled .

it was fun getting to court where they were horrified to discover that their native ontario birth didn't count for a thing. i think this is the back lash vote for harris and now rob ford. the locall born used to have huge advantages. virtually guaranteed the big jobs on bay street, but now you need to get degrees with good marks and from the top institutions and there are people from all over competing.

so yeah i wouldn't live there again unless i was totally broke with no other options

I agree that the Toronto music scene is cold, cliqueish, and very pretentious, but I haven't really bothered to deal with it much at all, so it hasn't had much effect on me.

I wouldn't want to live there either.

If I was going to seek a viable career in music, I wouldn't do it in Toronto. I wouldn't do it in Canada. Where I would do it is in Europe or Asia.

So, what happens when you sue a person for slander? What is it that you try to get from them?

Um - when was this? I've met probably thousands of people, of all ages, born and raised in Ontario, and of those thousands, maybe three or four had what someone might imagine were "big jobs on bay street". And as far as I could see, they had worked pretty hard to get those jobs, and were working damn hard to keep them. Or to climb up the corporate ladder. Same thing, maybe; I wouldn't know.

BTW... I mentioned the 401... for those who don't know, I quote from Wikipedia : "The segment of Highway 401 passing through Toronto is the busiest highway in North America, and one of the widest and busiest in the world."

No shit. I am an early riser (and a Transportation Engineer) and I pulled a chair to the window of that hotel room and drank tea and watched the 401 traffic in awe from 5AM to 7AM three mornings. It was absolutely unreal. Around 6 AM, 5 inbound lanes were busy and I don't think ANY vehicle was driving less than 140kph. The guy that drove me in from the airport had the limo van at 160 most of the way and he was changing lanes constantly. Never again if I can help it.

Even the main streets... while on course, an Indian lad I made friends with took us out one eve to pick up, yes, of course, Indian grub. He decided a shortcut was the way to go. It involved making a u-turn from the inside lane to the opposite outside lane FOUR lanes away in 70kph traffic. Didn't tell the three country bumpkins from New Brunswick he was gonna do it.

I said, "Jaysus H. Murphy man! I ain't THAT fuckin hungry. Did you used to drive rally?" He laughed and replied, "No, but I drove taxi in Bombay and Nairobi and Rome so this is a minor thing for me." When we got to the restaurant, while waiting for the takeout, I had a few ales in the parking lot and enjoyed the rest of the drive back to the hotel.

Yeah, I turned down that big offer. I just couldn't handle the idea of wearing a suit and tie 5 days a week, attending coporate strategy sessions, dealing with flow charts, saying things like "Let's run it up the flagpole and see who salutes." or "Who dropped the ball on this one?"

I start shaking all over and hyperventilating, just thinking about it.

LH... big offer... I worked for a large company that started playing the "downsizing game" by offering "packages" for ees who would leave before the next round of cuts wherein nobody would get near the deals offered. I asked for a package. They said no and offered me a "big offer" at a position in another city. Nope. I took my suit and tie off and wore $20 work pants, $12 work shirts and old huntin boots to work. I was told I did not meet dress code for management and I may be fired.

I told them that their refusal was why I took off my "management clothes"... I was saving them for my next job after the cuts. I think the bastards still don't understand to this day my protest of their inhumane treatment of their ees... or perhaps they were the ruthless, ignorant pricks they were and knew what I was doing.

They did give me the severance package after a while and I was happy to get out and start my own business and remain a good ol boy in a backwater town. Nowadays, I kinda wonder if I shoulda went on accounta business is near a crawl, but I just thought continuing to work for sharks in a concrete jungle would suck.

Toronto should stop trying to win the Stanley Cup, because there are simply too many teams now and the odds are too long of becoming the winner. It's unrealistic to even try.

Instead, Toronto should send some well-trained agents to steal the Stanley Cup, bring it back to Toronto, and then refuse to give it up unless paid some enormous ransom by the rest of the League. The League would probably refuse to pay, so Toronto could just keep the Cup for good after that, eh?

When we take to the road and make one of our periodic pilgrimages to Ontario's Banana Belt, we always, without fail, skirt Toronto on the 407 toll road. It's not cheap, and it's worth every nickel.

I think it was the 45-minute traffic jam on the westbound side near Milton during the summer of 2001. There we sat in a 1986 VW Golf without air-conditioning, and the temperature was 35 degrees Celsius with no breeze. After that, I considered the 407 cheap at twice the price.

Nova Scotia has no agreement with the toll collectors allowing them to access vehicle registration data, so they can take my picture and kiss my ass at the same time! I hate road tolls with a passion and governments entering P3 agreements only do so to grease the pockets of their corporate friends!

"What's your IQ?"
The guy says, "168."

The robot then proceeds to talk about physics, space exploration and medical technology.

The guy leaves, but he is curious, so he goes back into the bar.
The robot bartender says, "What will you have?"
The guy says, "Martini".

Again, the robot makes a great martini, gives it to the man and says,
"What's your IQ?"
The guy says, "100."

The robot then starts to talk about Nascar, Budweiser and John Deere tractors.

The guy leaves, but finds it very interesting, so he thinks he will try it one more time.
He goes back into the bar.
The robot says, "What will you have?"
The guy says, "Martini",

The robot brings him another great martini.
The robot then says, "What's your IQ?"
The guy says, "Uh, about 50."

The robot leans in real close and says, "So.. you gonna cheer for the Leafs again this year?"

I was just idly reacting to one of my pet peeves, guys. I've been bugged for years and years by all kinds of people mispelling the word "loser" as "looser" or "losing" as "loosing". It's a very common error for some reason, typically seen scrawled on bathroom walls in the restaurants around here where some local loser is trying to call someone else he knows a loser.... ;-) That's why I always have Shane spell it "looser", because I KNOW that's what Shane would do. There's no way Shane would ever spell that word correctly!

At any rate, I have PM'd Beer and apologized for appearing to jump on him about it. It was just me doing my usual kneejerk reaction to a pet peeve of my own, and it really has nothing to do with Beer at all.

Jay Leno said, in his monologue about the Rob Ford crack video, something like, "Well, can you blame him? There's not much else to do in Toronto."
If Jay can't find anything to do in Toronto, he's not looking very hard. There are great jazz, blues, country, folk and rock venues in Toronto. There are professional sports teams. There are theatres large and small. Stores that sell almost anything. I have never lived there, but have seen shows from "The Mouse Trap" to "Hank Williams, The Show He Never Gave" to "Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable". I've seen performers like Misissippi John Hurt, Dizzy Gillespie, Paul McCartney, The Greenbriar Boys, Gord Lightfoot, Rev Gary Davis, Pete Seeger, Oscar Peterson, Muddy Waters, Jim Hall, John Renbourne, The Watersons & Martin Carthy, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks... plus many great local performers.
I love living in a small town where I can walk to any place I want to go, but it's nice to be within a short drive to Toronto for the attractions of a big city.

Hi, LH.

When you stop to think about it, the spelling of 'lose' doesn't make sense. Look at the following words:

hose
rose
nose
chose
Mose
prose
those
lose

Which word does not belong? 'Lose,' of course. It has a long u sound when it ought to have a long o sound. No wonder, when we are typing away and are concentrating on what to say, that we forget how to spell the odd word 'lose.'

I've even done it myself!

The sensible phonetic way to spell "lose" would be "looz".

The we have "loose", as in "loose screw". I think the most sensible way to spell that phonetically would be "loos" and not bother with the "e" on the end, since there's no real reason to have an "e" there.

Let's say wee speld evreething in a totalee lojikul way, laik in this sentens. Wood that bee the way too go? Or wood it coz peepul too get even mor cunfyoosed?

I recall an English teacher asking us how we would pronounce "photi".
He asked us to try it with "ph" pronounced as in "phone", "o" pronounced as in "women" and "ti" pronounced as in "motion".
