01 Sep 99 - 01:00 AM (#110294) Subject: U.K. folk pub suggestions, please From: ddw Hi U.K. Mudcatters I'm leaving Saturday (Sept. 4) for a month in your fair land and I'd love to hear suggestions on folk pubs in your areas. We'll be in the London area for a few days, then heading through the Midlands, up toward Scotland (tho' not likely into it) and Wales, then back down into the Lake District and ultimately back to London. I'm not too interested in festivals or big concert venues, mostly looking for intimate little pubs with good music and friendly people. Maybe even places I could join in the music. I play mostly blues and ragtime, but enjoy other forms as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated. cheers, ddw |

I have not checked the listing this time but in my area, the only entry that might be wrong is the Rhyl Folk Club on a Friday night. I might give it as the Bee which is closed. As far as I understand, it has moved to Costigans which is opposite it. A couple more notes: The Llandudno session on a Thursday night is friendly but very quite - usualy 3 or 4 beginners. The Conwy Session on a Sunday night is chaos and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone at the moment. I get free beer for organising this one but there are times when I wonder whether it is worth it although the holiday season is nearly over so things should settle down a bit. Jon |

There are several ommisions, and it lists at least one (Betws-y-Coed on a Thursday night) that changed venues and nights more than a year ago. I usually check the North West Wales listing in folkwales.org listing for Mick Tems when he notifies us of an uptate in the folk music and I know that he is very keen to ensure the information he supplies is accurate. I wouldthink that his is the most reliable site for all of Wales Jon |

Starts about 8.15pm, very friendly, English & Celtic music, singing, fiddles, melodeons, concertinas, hammered dulcimer, guitars, bouzouki, flutes, whistles, bodhrans etc etc.
also on around that week locally - Hitchin Folk Club, Sun Sep 12th, Isla St Clair - and on the way back down: Sun 26th Sep, Hitchin Folk Club (herts), Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick, & THe Stables, Multon Keynes (Bucks), Battlefield Band; Friday 24th Sep, Mad Nanny Folk Club, Letchworth, Herts - Sun Trap & Tam Lin.

02 Sep 99 - 09:28 PM (#110915) Subject: RE: U.K. folk pub suggestions, please From: Malcolm Douglas The South Riding Folk Network maintains a large (though not guaranteed!) listing of folk clubs and pub sessions in the South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire area in their online directory at: http://welcome.to/srfn If you find yourself in Sheffield, "Fagan's", a pub on Broad Lane near the city centre, is generally a good bet; many of the resident musicians are of a pretty high standard, though it can get crowded. The music is mainly Irish-related, but it's worth mentioning that Keith Hinchliffe, one of the Wednesday night residents, also plays some impressive ragtime guitar. Have a great time!
