Then I googled and found these additional lyrics at a blog belonging to the Midlife Gals: REDBONE HOUND Rodney Dillard Fogeye, Piefoot, Redbone, Dragalong, Coof, all night you can still hear his song. Runnin' with the moon on a black-faced riverbank, Flatfoot and Fickly with a coon on the run. CHORUS: Redbone hound, come and get your belly up, Lyin' on your tail all day long. The mist is a-risin' in the Cripple Creek Holler. Gonna run till the dew on the grass meets the sun. Old Fogeye been rackin' through the bean field, Diggin' up the corn seed, he can't do more. Uncle Jack says he's goin' for his shotgun. Gonna nail his hide on the chicken-house door! [I assume all the strange words in this song are names of dogs. Fogeye is the name of the coon, Piefoot is probably the lead dog. Flatfoot may refer to the way a big hound runs, kind of like a bear, flopping their big feet out flatfooted. Fickly may refer to dogs being trained to only chase coons. |

Which means running fast as you can after your coon dogs....I gather none of yall have ever gone coon huntin', have you? When I was growing up many years ago, there was a saying we all said when someone was running as hard as they could...flat-footin' fifty...which refered to 50 mph. |

Redbone Coonhound dogs originated in the Southern United States, and derive from foxhounds brought by immigrants from Scotland. • Also, a coon hunting friend of mine clarified the first two words; he believes they are: “Fogeye” [a southern slang term for raccoons, how their eyes shine in trees at night] and “piefoot” [more slang describing the shape of raccoon hind feet tracks]. Interesting points to consider. Loved your “flat-footin’ fifty” explanation. I have heard “flat-footing’ it” often refer to running, so adding “50” makes sense . . . runnin’ FAST! |
