03 Sep 99 - 10:39 AM (#111086) Subject: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: Bert Hi guys, Thanks for putting up with the technical difficulties we had with "feet first"; Max and the Elves are working to get them fixed for next week. However we would like some comments on the content and presentation. We have had one request for more music. Good point j0 77, we'll have more for you next week. What do you like? All of you reporters and broadcasters out there, come back and tell us what we were doing wrong. We need all the help we can get. Thanks Alice, for refreshing the Mudcat song thread. Don't forget gholks there'll be prizes for the songs to open and close the Radio Show. Bert. |
03 Sep 99 - 10:53 AM (#111088) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: Liam's Brother Hi Bert! I was away for the 10 days leading up to Mudcat Radio's debut and I got excited when I found out about it. You were so popular that I couldn't even access Mudcat while you were on the air so there was never a chance to catch you! Had I been successful in logging in, what would I have had to do to hear the program?
All the best,

03 Sep 99 - 11:10 AM (#111091) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: Alice Hi, Bert, I really liked your interview with the Patons, and I also think that hearing music that connects somehow to the Mudcat is a very good part of your broadcast. Whether it is sung in your office/studio, played from a recording, or over the phone, I think that is very interesting to most of us here. I would like to hear some of the songs we have discussed here on the forum as performed by various people. It would be interesting to hear different versions of the same family of tunes for instance. I know there are lots of examples in the last couple of years where we have discussed a song or tune and its roots or many versions. I can think of The Butterfly, for example, as a tune we discussed ... Bruce O. always had good feedback on the origins of tunes. |
03 Sep 99 - 11:13 AM (#111092) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: catspaw49 Guys, I thiught you did great for a first show. I know you'll find it easier as you go along, all the tech screwing around and all has got to be a bit nerve racking...BUT RELAX!!! Hellfire guys, you're not on WNBC or something....YOU ARE JUST TALKING TO FRIENDS!!!! And we'll love it no matter what!!! More music would be nice, but more talk is certainly OK too. You each oughta' do a song like you did. Bert, do some more of your own, here's the chance. And "Blind Waxin' Max" (blues player's names don't have to make sense) can do another blues. I'd try a different Mic setup for it since although the guitar was loud, it wasn't distinct, as were the voices. I'd also STRONGLY suggest using "Singer's Request" for the closing number on the show. Use an original for the opening and perhaps another original to introduce some segment, but "Singer's Request" is one helluva' a nice piece (off a GREAT album too) and it's words are really applicable to all of us, the family and village of Mudcat. I liked the "Best from the Threads" idea Bert...just remember your notes next time. You could include a general rundown of the week's thread "ambiences" since that seems to happen around here. I'm looking forward to the next show...which should be easier if you get some messages and calls. Are we better off sending e-mails or messages during the show? Is chat looking like a go?

03 Sep 99 - 12:11 PM (#111103) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: Max Lets hope next week can go on, on schedule. Apparently we crashed our router, our ISP's router, and their ISP's router. For those that don't know what a router is, it is a very important part of ones connectivity to the internet, and is like a little proprietary computer that maintains the gateway between my network and the rest of the internet. Whenever you hear about major outages or internet traffic jams, its usually routers. So our ISP and theirs, told us not to do this again until they figure out what happened. It can't be our fault though because I was not doing anything unusual or non-standard, so we probably just discovered a weakness or flaw of theirs, no ours. I will keep you all informed. |

03 Sep 99 - 12:42 PM (#111112) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: annamill I just last night had the chance to listen to the archived show and watch Max and Bert, listen to Sandy and Caroline, and listen to Rick's song. I agree that there should be more music. I would like to hear more originals. By that I mean, Mudcatters recorded on tape or digital recordings ;-) I couldn't listen to the whole thing, but I got all of part one and part of part two. I'm going to listen to the whole thing tomorrow. Max kept saying that no one was listening. For myself, I didn't get home from work til 8:30 pm Wed. Maybe that's the problem. Maybe we'd have more catters able to listen if it were later. But then it would conflict with "Voyager". Can't have that. When I finally did hear it, it was fun. I loved hearing Sandy and Caroline's voices again. I loved hearing Bert's song. That was fun. Once again, Wonderful job, Max and elves. Can't wait till the next one. I tried to find Max waxing, but I couldn't. Can anyone tell me where I would find him? HAWD. Love, annap |

03 Sep 99 - 01:43 PM (#111140) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: katlaughing I liked the stream of consciouness/improv/wing it/Onstage (yes, a blatant plug for MAx's real job!) kind of feel. Reminded me so much of Max Headroom! I was laughing with delight. No more apologies about professionalism and such....the way it was made it so much more like we were just sitting around the kitchen listening, singing, and talking....lovely. More lighting would help with the video; your faces were pretty much in the dark, except when you moved into more light. Rog, the broadcast engineer says (and I paraphrase 'cause I can't remember the jargon) more specific/directional??? mics would be better, pick up less outside noise, as you already mentioned when waxing, Max. I'd love to hear you both do more live music, but REALLY enjoyed the samples from the CDs you played, too. I agree with Alice about hearing things relevant to what we've been discussing and hearing other Mudders. Of course,, that'll depend on us honouring your request for material, eh, Max:-)? I loved having the video, too! It was so fun to see where the Mudcat "lives" and to see you guys "in action". The interview was great and I'd like to hear more of them, too. I also liked the way you explained more about the non-profit status, Max, the Foundation and all. I don't think an hour is going to be long enough for very long. Rog and I have both been in broadcast for upteen years and we both have good eyes and ears for this kind of thing. We think you've got a great concept/program and that it has fantastic potential. As I said before, it would be so cool, down the techie road, if we could do live feeds from various places full of Mudders. Eventually, why not expand and add another show, which would be talk/phone in? There is a good example of this on the AIROS site. You ALL did really, really well. Max, your voice was born for broadcast and you are really good at winging it, as well as you, Bert. Don't lose that by being too organised or "professional".*g* The only other thing is letting us know what the best way is to send you messages during the show: email, telephone, or in a thread? I know when you were Waxing On, Max, you could tell who of us was on and directed your comments, (thanks for telling me to go to bed!) to us, so I figure there is some way for you to see what we're writing, too. For those of you who asked, you can't find Max Waxes On, except when he is doing it live, as it is not archived. It was great, a real stream of consciousness kinda thing, or.....was that the Black & Tan talking?? Loved hearing you pick and sing. Remember YOU WERE THERE! The birth of Mudder Radio! May our children's children remark upon that day, with a roll call of ancestral web-pioneers: the listeners, pickers, programmers, hosts, etc....a truly blessed and unique confluence of great minds, hearts, and spirit! luvyaKatinaweoftheweb&itsreach&immediacy |
03 Sep 99 - 02:32 PM (#111150) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: bill\sables Max and Bert, I listened to the show and enjoyed it very much I think the content is as it should be with songs and chat. There is only one point I would like to make, during the songs both live and recorded I was able to pick up every word but when Max spoke I thought it was a little too fast for us foreigners to pick up all the words with his US accent. Bert seemed OK and the little bits of cockney were evident This is not a complaint it is only a suggestion But thanks again Max and Bert the show was great and you made history and we were all there Cheers Bill |
03 Sep 99 - 03:00 PM (#111153) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: Cara I listened and loved it too, esp. as Kat said the feeling that it wasn't all staged and perfectly mapped out. The improvisational quality felt very natural. The Webcam was excellent too. Didn't alison say that she had a Webcam too? It would be cool to interview the Oz folks on the show and hear/see them sing, as they are some of the Catters who are furthest away and least likely to be seen. I loved the music selection, live and from CD. But I like the talking very much too. I'd hate to see it go to a typical radio format, with the DJs serving mostly only as announcers. Callers will add a lot to the show as well, and I'm sure you'll have more than you can handle once the kinks are worked out. All in all, an excellent addition to our little cyberworld. |
03 Sep 99 - 03:58 PM (#111171) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: bob schwarer I agree with Kat(for a change) on the lighting. Maybe the background light was fooling the camera. Nice job. Bob S. |
03 Sep 99 - 04:16 PM (#111176) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: katlaughing Tsk, Bob! I thought we were ALL like-thinkers!**BG** Max, I just had another idea, don't know how feasible and legal, but it would be really neat if, when one comes to the Mudcat, they could "tune-in" to whatever CD you might be playing at that moment. Of course it would be a CD available at the Mudcat. Don't know how you'd do this when you actually have a life and get the hell out of there for a few hours, but it would be great. kat |
03 Sep 99 - 04:42 PM (#111179) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: Tony Burns Most of it has been said. I second the motion(s) to improve the lighting. I think Bert and Max should do at least one live performance each on every show. |
03 Sep 99 - 04:43 PM (#111180) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: Max Wow, kat, we had that conversation here in the office Thursday morning. We have the technology to encode the entire Folk Legacy Collection and have it play randomly 24/7. Also, we can make is like the green clicky things and have your real audio player let you click when you hear something you like and go to the album page, which in turn will lead you to the ordering page. However: Some theories say that if you get to hear all the stuff all the time on the cat, you won't bother buying it. The legalities of it are two-fold. For one, we do have a BMI license, and can get an ASCAP license for, I think, $250 per year. These are like what radio stations have to play their music. Since we are non-profit we can apparently get around reoccuring "mechanical" fees. The deal with the first fold, which is copyrighted material and people with real record deals, is gonna take some thought and probably professional legal advice. The second fold is mudcatters playing their own tunes, or folks that do their own tunes with folks like Sandy that will cooperate with us, or at least independent musicians or small labels that benefit from the exposure that we offer. The second is certainly the easiest to contemplate. So this is what I am thinking about. What I have already finished pondering, though, is that I am committed to making the addition and exploitation of MULTIMEDIA on the Mudcat in the year and years to come. Technology and bandwidth (and Mudcatters) are finally catching up to the things that we Web Publishers have been wanting to do all along. Hang on to your hats, and call your ISP and local phone company and start asking about DSL (digital subscriber lines)... |
03 Sep 99 - 05:10 PM (#111186) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: Bert We've already discussed the lighting problem and you should be able to see us next time. Of course whether that is going to be an advantage, remains to be seen. Re: 'how about some good rap?' Is there such a thing? Re: 'different versions of songs.' We'd love to do that - SEND 'EM TO US folks. 'Cos between us, we would usally only have 2 versions of any particular song. I think next week I'll email my notes to Max, then it won't matter if I forget them. I don't know if I'll be able to slow Max down at all, that's about as relaxed as he gets. Unless anyone's got any weed ;-) Max will have to deal with the 'getting pictures from Australia' issue, too technical for me at the moment. Rer: 'Bert and Max should do at least one live performance each on every show.' Well you just try to stop us!! We've got 8000 or more songs in DT and when we've sung all of them we'll just write some more. Thanks for all your kind thoughts. Glad you like it a bit rough and ready 'cos that seems to be what you'll get. I can't see me ever becoming a polished broadcaster. Bert. |

05 Sep 99 - 11:26 AM (#111632) Subject: RE: Mudcat Radio - Feedback wanted From: Llanfair I only got to see-hear the show on archive this afternoon, due to various technical difficulties. I loved it, and feel closer to other Mudcatters than ever before. Can anything be done about not being able to get into the cafe when the show is on? I stayed up late to listen, and couldn't get in. Max and Bert, a brilliant job. Hwyl, Bron. |
