Boy, I didn't have any luck finding this at all. Good luck, scummy. Keep checking this thread, and maybe somebody will find an answer for you.

Here are the lyrics I got from that YouTube recording. Three lines I'm unsure of (including the first line of the chorus, which appears twice), marked with [?]. Yes, the first line is them singing the title.

Mediocre Me
Music and Lyrics by Jim McPherson
Recorded by Stained Glass (1967, RCA Records)

Mediocre Me

There's no help for Mediocre Me
Even mum and dad deserted me
Left inside a basket
I was placed beside a door
Left with me a note that said,
"A present from a store" [the stork?]

There's no help for Mediocre Me
Must be bad blood in my family tree
My great grandfather smuggled
Whiskey into jail
Poor Uncle Fred was hung
For stealing his own mail

-- CHORUS --
Something just happened by [just passed me by?]
Is it love or just a dream
Ooh, but to my surprise
I passed a mirror
It's just me

There's no help for Mediocre Me
So my friend a shrink I went to see
First he found neurosis
And described [prescribed?] a crystal ball [?]
Then he found psychosis
Then he found no mind at all

-- CHORUS --
Something just happened by [?]
Is it love or just a dream
Ooh, but to my surprise
I passed a mirror
It's just me

There's no help for Mediocre Me
There's no help for Mediocre Me
There's no help for Mediocre Me

I must say that I'm ... less than impressed by this lyric.

Yes, the second guesses in these lines are correct:

"A present from the stork"

Something just passed me by

And prescribed a crystal ball

Something just happened by

Note re "just happened by": I vaguely remember hearing this UK expression, usually in UK TV shows, but I haven't heard it in a long time and I've never heard it here in Oz.

Helen, I listened several times to the YouTube video again, at different speeds. I think you called every one of my 'not sure' words correctly. Good job!!!

Thanks. So watching lots of Brit TV shows was not a waste of time, eh? LOL

THis reminds me of "mediocre Fred,"
a song routine written by someone else -- Pat Paulsen? --
for the Smothers Brothers.
It has a twist ending though,
and generates big laughs, so it's a different sort of song.

Well, here're the lyrics and a link to that Smothers Brothers song, then too:

Mediocre Fred
Music and Lyrics by Pat Paulsen
Recorded by The Smothers Brothers (1964: Tour De Farce: American History And Other Unrelated Subjects)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLyY-si0IP0

There once was a man who was none too good,
And then I'd say he was none too bad.
At times he was mighty good for a spell,
And sometimes he'd go out and he'd raise a little hell.
Mediocre Fred... Mediocre Fred

Fred went to work from 8 to 5,
And he punched a clock to show he was alive.
Went to church every Sunday morn',
Sometimes he wondered why he was born.
Mediocre Fred... Mediocre Dull Fred

Fred went to the movies every Saturday night,
Liked to watch TV and the western fights,
And he paid his taxes most every year,
And on a hot summer day, why, he drank a little beer.
Exciting Mediocre Fred... Mediocre Fred

Well the days went by, all dull and grey,
And he didn't think much and had little to say.
And when the full moon rose he'd climb over the moat,
Find some people sleeping and he'd BITE THEIR THROATS!
Mediocre Fred... Mediocre Dull Fred
