FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out )

17 Feb 11 - 07:57 PM (#3097600)
Subject: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out )
From: Commander Crabbe

Dear all

Have just had the unfortunate news last Tuesday that Paul and Ann (The Landlord and Landlady) are shortly to be leaving the pub and that it looks likely that the pub will close it's doors.

They are not sure of the exact date they are leaving but estimate mid March.

Until the pub closes we still intend to run the Tuesday night and First Saturday of the month singaround so all are still welcome.

It has been eight years since the session was started up by Stuart supported by myself and the wife and it has gone through it's up and downs. That said, it has been well supported by many visitors despite being a hidden treasure. Especially during the last three folk weeks which had well supported evenings all week and have been a blast. (albeit very tiring)

Can I take this opportunity to thank all the many visitors and regular away supporters who have helped to make the sessions what they are. Big thanks also to the local regulars who helped to keep it going during the dark winter nights.

Finally thanks must go to Paul and Ann for allowing us to invade their hostelry every Tuesday (and the occasional Saturday). And also for the half time sandwiches provided.

See you all around the bazaars.

Chris

It looks like the final First Saturday in the FILO will be Saturday 5th March, this is the night after the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat do, unfortunately I have other committments for that night but hopefully enough people will go to the FILO to make it a cracking night, I would also like to add many thanks from Wombat and myself to Ann and Paul, they have been fantastic hosts during their time there, lets hope they get another pub in Whitby.

So what's going to happen to the pub? Is it going to be pernamently closed or is it up for lease/let? Was there just not enough trade there? Shame for it to just die.

From what we hear it is more than likely going to close The brewery are unwilling to invest in the pub. Also the current economic climate is not helping as less people are going out to drink in the pub. This is not a phenomenon restricted to the FILO alone in Whitby as other casualties include "The New Angel" and "The Bottom House" and it is fairly obvious that there is less trade in the other pubs that are still open.

This is so sad for the Whitby music scene, and for Ann and Paul.We know that a lot of the pubs are struggling, but to lose four of Whitby's fine drinking establishments is appalling. Jingle and I have had so many great evenings in the Filo, and hoped for many more when we finally got to Whitby for good.   This is going to be a bit later than we thought, unfortunately, as some of you may know, our place was flooded out before Christmas by a STUPID NEIGHBOURS burst pipes.(Lost everything including a Flatiron mandolin).
So where do The FILO sessions go to now? There never was anywhere as welcoming. Ann (and Chuck before her) were so generous with the food at half time, and the music was the best weekly/monthly sessions in Whitby. Golden Lion? Ship? It'll be a nice excuse for a few pub crawls!!

I can only secong these sentiments, Ann and Paul have been so supportive of the folk nights we have had at the FILO, they have also been supportive of the Runswick Rescue Boat and our efforts to raise funds for it.
Hopefully many of the people who come for the fund raiser on Friday will stay over to give them a resounding send off.
Both Christine and myself will miss the sessions in the FILO, we both think they have been the best in the town.

Leslie and I would like to say "Thanks" to all concerned for the fantastic night on Saturday. We particularily enjoyed "Noggin Noggin Grog" which was the signiture song for our little band in Suffolk. Best of luck in the search for a new landlord or new venue. We'll certainly be across for the first session!

Cheers,

Just to keep you updated, The FILO under Ann and Paul has closed it's doors today. This means that the session this and next Tuesday which we had planned to do will now no longer be.

Thanks to everyone who packed out the session on Saturday night and made it a great finale.

We have been appraised of plans to keep the pub open but as yet have no idea whether the session will be continuing there.

I will let everyone know as soon as we do.

The new Landlady/manager must be mad, surely if she looks at the weekly takings, sees the rise during Folky nights, she can't afford ignore the difference.   FILO is so quiet mid week/ out of season. Even at weekends, the locals would rather go to the pubs down in the town for a bit of life, and to catch up on Whitby's gossip.
Still, that's the new landlady's perogative...she doesn't have to like us noisy, lively, friendly, beer drinking Folkies...

Just spoken to Stuart, he was going to leave it a week or two to let the dust settle, however events changed things and he went in to see the new incumbent. She told him she did not want the Tuesday session as it was not financially rewarding (not her exact words but the gist) However she did want the monthly Saturday session to continue, you can guess Stuarts response, needless to say he politely declined. So now we shall have to see what other potential venues are available,I would think that after a brief "honeymoon" period Tuesday nights will be very quiet in the FILO and she may have some time on her hands to reconsider her initial reaction. Unfortunately this is our loss as well as hers, the weekly sessions at the FILO could very very entertaining with a wide variety of styles and material.

Strange tack the licenced trade is taking nowadays.

I remember when landlords actively supported and encouraged any group of people they could get. Darts, pool, fives and threes, cribbage, music - you name it. We used to play in the lounge while they were playing darts etc in the back bar. Nobody ever shouted "game on" at us!

On a brighter note, I know a pub where they took out the pool table and dart board to get "a different type of customer" to come in. Nobody did. The games (and the locals) were back within three months.

Best of luck with the search,
Richard

It was ever thus ! I (and sometimes a mate) were fired from the same pub three times ! Each time it was sold , and one time time it took three weeks for the new gaffer to ask us back ! And that was thirty years ago !
Good luck getting the session back !

Aledgidly:-
Same old same Old! Brewery can't afford a manager cheaper with a tenant? They will charge the New Tenant according to how much Beer the Pub sells. So why sell lot's of beer and work hard until you are the New Tennant and on a low rent for Two Years! Next ploy is for the Brewery to pay for live music to make the Manager sell more Beer!

Still Welcoming the Goths! Well that week is still a while away and the Blood Suckers at the Brewery will want to stick together.

Hiya Tyke,
I think you might have got your wires crossed - Managers are believed by the Breweries to be cheaper ( Not Tenants) though I have no knowledge of the FILO present arrangements.

My understanding in the average English pub is that a Manager gets a wage / salary - so he/she is (relatively) unaffected by sales therefore there is no incentive to work harder or institute ideas to get more punters through the door.
A Tenant purchases a lease, and also pays a rent generally to the brewery who owns the pub. The Tenant is obliged to buy beer etc from the brewery at prices set by the Brewery.

Put VERY simply , you're more likely to get a stoppy-back or a late drink from a Tenant because the Tenant has to fill the Till to pay the rent , so , if the Tenant can get punters through the door by having a folk evening or whatever other type – then why not ?
A Tenant try other revenue raising activites i.e. probviding meals / food / putting on entertainment etc.

A Manager just finds THAT situation more work, so they are not inclined to put themselves to the trouble.

I must stress again I don't have any knowledge of the present set up at FILO , but it is a shame for all like minded Folkies and other visitors to Whitby – especially with a great fish and chip shop across the road .

22 Mar 11 - 11:02 AM (#3119016)
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out )
From: Sir Roger de Beverley

The additional problem is that most of these pubs that end up in this situation are not owned by breweries but by pubcos that have no link to beer production nor in promoting it. These pubcos are simply property owning conglomerates that mainly make their money buying and selling properties and collecting rents. (Oh, and a 40% markup on the beers that are sold)

That means that the community side of pubs (including music) is very low in the priority list.

Roger

What a bloody shame.

Me think landlady want heavy drinkers, who then spill out of the pub, thump f**k out of each other smash windows and damage property.

Stupid landlady.

When I went to FILo, I met many very nice people, who had a fair amount to drink, but then went home peacefully.

Silly arsehole will probably come creeping back when she realises the error of her ways.
