Subject: 'Silver Coin'??
From: Joec58

Dear anyone! This is a hard one.At a UK Youth Hostel(Tanners Hatch),I heard this song one evening whilst participating in a 'folk music round the fire-side all nighter'. Some of the words are below.I have been told by the guy singing it,it has been deleted from sale.He isn't about for me to get the full words and chords.Has anyone any clue to it's origins? Who did this lovely song? I was told the title is 'Silver Coin'.May be wrong,I do not know for sure. Well,it is up to you now,I suppose! Joe

Now that I'm older Now that I'm old enough to know, What it is to be lonesome. What it is to be without a home. I've a friend in mind, who loves me rain or shine. Don't ask me why... Her younger eyes are so much older eyes than mine.

Joe, you're right, it is called 'Silver Coin', sung by Archie Fisher on 'Sunsets I've Galloped Into' which should be available as a CD. (Not quite sure, though!)

SILVER COIN
(Terry Hiscock)

Now that I'm older, though I'm not old enough to know
What it is to be lonely, what it is to be without a home
I've a friend nearby who loves me rain or shine
Don't ask me why
But her younger eyes are so much older eyes than mine

I thought I was well-read, wouldn't have to ask her for a lead
Till I read what her eyes said, then I knew there was nothing more to read
Nothing more to do and nothing more to say
But give all my words away
To someone who needs them who can't find a girl like you

And I ran all the way here to be the first to see the morning star
There were others before me for the sounds of beauty travel far
I hear it loud and clear and it rings like the silver coin
Thrown down on stone
Though I'm lost in the crowd I know you're around me somehow

Allmusic.com says Terry Hiscock wrote the SILVER COIN that Archie Fisher recorded.

Bridget St John also recorded it on her album "Thank You for...." (1972).

There are other songs with the same title.

Here's the original recording by Hunter Muskett ( with Terry Hiscock).

Hunter Muskett Silver Coin

I had the Hunter Muskett album, but if my memory serves me well, Silver Coin was the outstanding song.

Derek Brimstone also used to sing this smashing song, as did the late great Ric Sharp from whom I learnt it.

So glad so many people out there are still singing this song. I wrote it for my girlfriend and still sing it to her 40 years on.

I think Derek Brimstone used to sing this but where it comes from I don't know.

I heard Barbara Dickson sing this a number of times but found it more appealling when it was elusive. Once I had Archie Fisher singing it on 'Sunsets I've Travelled Into' I decided not to learn it after all (but did learn The Presence from that album).
