I hope some of the kindness you show comes 'round back to your ladywife as good health outcomes. FWIW - Try to take advantage of whatever support networks are available in your area. Here we have "The Gathering Place." Other cities have "Gilda's Club" - places that offer resources to those who've had cancer touch their lives (themselves AND family members). It's much less scary when you've got others around you who are farther down the same road & you can see that increasingly, it's a road that is a return to health. Joanne in Cleveland |

For that matter, no Mudcatter's life and health is BS. I know that doesn't help, but then again, what does? Just pull up your socks and step forward. Personally I don't wear socks ............. don't wear underwear either but let's not get into that here. I'm not sure where we want to get into that but I'm pretty sure it isn't here. We could talk about the sock issue I suppose............no, that's not too good an idea either. Let's just have you get some really long socks, pull 'em up, and get your ass in a positive mood and ready to go into the fray! If your ass is going into the fray maybe you need some new underwear as well. Why not get some black knee socks or better yet get some sock garters!!! Then get some plaid boxers.....really big ones! Now pull them up so the front comes up over your belly and the back barely covers your butt. Then with your socks and garters in place put on some hard sole black dress shoes and the rattiest robe you can find at Frieda's fifth hand shop. If laughter is the best medicine, Linda can probably cut the chemo in half after checking out your new loungewear. Ya' know one of my fears here is that you'll really get into the look.......................yeah......................maybe you should just pull up the socks you have................... Spaw |

Something Beautiful - Sinead I read somewhere of those lasses who've shaved their hair off completely, or almost all off, before treatment even starts, to avoid their hair falling out in clumps. They felt much better doing it that way, more in control....and they discovered bandanas, gypsy scarves twirled around their heads, great eye make up..sparkling eyeshadows, sexy kohl, big beautiful earrings that dangle and dingle.. Others were simply happy to be bald for as long as it took..and learned to love the fluffiness of their new hair coming through... It'll soon pass, Dan..I know that's so easy for others to say, but it will...and we're all right here with you both...(((XXX))) |

Peeing pure coffee by now I'd guess... ;0) It's dark over here now, Dan...8.15pm..the lights of Torquay are twinkling away in the distance. I'm just making supper for us...and Tiggs, my dog is curled up fast asleep with his favourite cat, Tilly. She utterly adores him, kisses his face all over every single night..and he sits there like the soppy apeth that he is..big sloppy grin on his face, letting her. You know, when Linda's feeling better, after all this is behind you, you guys should have a holiday over here, come and visit all us crazy British Mudcat folks, then we can all get to give you both some real hugs, not just virtual ones.. You're doin' fine....just fine...keep breathing...we're here... I have to go check on the brocoli now as there's a weird smell coming from the kitchen...uh oh.....back shortly... |

Did I ever tell you that years back, when I worked for the heart chaps, they told me that every one of their secretaries had to watch an open heart operation, so they'd know what went on etc....Well, I took a deep breath and plunged in, when the time came...scared shitless I was...All the staff were so kind though, so relaxed and in control of everything...piped music was playing in the background too... Afterwards, when that particular patient came to see me I told him I'd been there, and he beamed at me, said "I was there too!"...bless him.. When he'd gone though the cardiologist let slip they'd been pulling me leg when they said about watching the operation, but they thought they'd see how far along with it I went..... Doh! :0) |

01 Apr 11 - 12:01 PM (#3126298) Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: catspaw49 So.....What the Doc is waiting on is an "Immuno" stain from histology to the pathologists. Specifically its a type of Immunoperoxidase which colors the cells to illuminate cell types. When they were in surgery they did a "Sentinel Node Biopsy" on which they performed a "frozen section." This fast freezes a tissue sample which is cut on a cryostatically enclosed microtome and then fast processed to get a timely read during surgery to let the surgeons know whether the margins or in this case the lymph nodes are clear. If they were as you said then to be absolutely sure they do the Immuno. In Karen's lab the slides would be path ready today but other labs are slower and in either case you have to wait on the pathologist to read the slides. Now I know you don't really give two shits about any of that but after 25 years married to a Histologist you learn a lot of basically useless crap. Occasionally though it can be a show stopper.........One time Karen and I were having a party and most everyone there was a teacher at the school where I taught or their spouse. Naturally most of the talk was of things happening at school and someone had brought up something odd that had happened. Karen, forgetting the audience she had, injected the following into the conversation: "We had a 4 pound uterus today." The silence was deafening followed by gales of laughter and a one-upsmanship game of uterus jokes. I always found that high school teachers are about as bawdy a group as you can find when they're away from the freakin' kids. Well that's a lot of time wasting post but what the hell............. When we first went in they inserted wires into Linda's breast to show the doc what needs removed. When they took her out to the surgery waiting room she handed me her bra and said do something with this i forgot to put it in the locker. Ok, so I stuffed it in my coat pocket. Welllll after 4 hours in surgery I started to lose it. This lovely elderly black lady who was waiting for her husband patted me on the shoulder and said it will all be fine. I was crying and needed to blow my nose. I reached into my pocket to get my tissue ... YUP without thinking pulled out Linda's bra and didn't notice. The lady said .. "Oh honey, I don't think your wife would like her bra being used as a nose rag" and gave me some tissue. I started laughing and so did she. |

I found out later what margins were. I didn't need any follow up treatment apart from 3-monthly appointments as my type of cancer could come back in the first 2 years. 04 Apr 11 - 05:45 PM (#3128540) Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: Little Robyn Nope, keep her active. Active is good! If she starts just hanging around, staying in bed, sitting in front of the telly, she'll start losing it. That's what I did after the second op and it was much harder to come back. The wound will stop her from over-doing things at first but she'll need to start stretching exercises if she gets cording - down the arm or down the ribs. (Voice of experience here!) So, as long as she's coping, let her go ahead. Lots of good wishes to you both. Robyn |

13 Apr 11 - 02:11 PM (#3134500) Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Dan, this is for Linda. Olivia Newton-John talking about being a Breast Cancer Thriver, and how she decided to envisage her chemotherapy as being a golden light flooding through her body, bringing healing. By the way, it was way back in 1992 when she had Stage II breast cancer. Olivia Newton John - Inspirational Video Taken from the 'biography' page of her main website: >>>>Her charmed life has not been without its share of upset. In the 90's, Olivia successfully overcame her own battle with breast cancer, which inspired her self-penned and produced album, "GAIA," her most personal album reflecting upon her experiences with cancer. She used these experiences to gain greater self-awareness and became a positive inspiration to millions of people battling cancer. As a breast cancer survivor, Olivia has become increasingly well known and respected for talking openly about her battle with breast cancer and for promoting public awareness of the importance of early detection. Her personal victory against cancer led her to announce her partnership with the Austin Health and the creation of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre and Wellness Centre (ONJCWC) on the Austin Campus in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia. The ONJCWC will provide a comprehensive range of services and facilities for cancer treatment, education, training and research including a wellness center for the mind, body and spirit (www.oliviaappeal.com). In April 2008, Olivia led a team of fellow cancer survivors, celebrities and Olympians on a trek along the Great Wall of China (www.GreatWalkToBeijing.com) and raised more than $2 million to find a new way to treat cancer and build the ONJCWC. A companion CD to benefit the ONJCWC as part of this global fundraising effort, "Olivia Newton-John & Friends: A Celebration In Song," has been released internationally and features duets with Keith Urban, Delta Goodrem, Sir Cliff Richard, Richard Marx, Amy Sky, and Barry Gibb to name a few. In November 2009, Olivia was on hand for the ground-breaking for the ONJCWC. Olivia continues to give back to the community generously and has been acknowledged many times by charitable and environmental organizations for her ongoing efforts, among them: the American Red Cross, the Environmental Media Association, the Women's Guild of Cedar's Sinai Medical Center, the Rainforest Alliance and Concept Cure. Continuing her efforts to find a cure for breast cancer, Olivia launched the Liv Aid ®, a breast self-examination aid that assists women to exercise breast self-exams correctly (www.Liv.com). Olivia credits her own breast self-exam as the first step to her eventual diagnosis of breast cancer. Now, 18 years later (and cancer free) she has become a passionate advocate in creating awareness for early detection and, encouraging women to take a more active role in their breast health.>>>>> You know, I can see your Linda doing something similar to that walk along the Great Wall of China when she gets her energy back again.. |

13 Apr 11 - 09:28 PM (#3134771) Subject: Lyr Add: MANUEL GARCIA (David Roth) From: frogprince I first heard this sung by Anne Hills: MANUEL GARCIA © 1986 David Roth based on a true story, with thanks to William Janz of the Milwaukee Sentinel for sending me his series of articles Manuel Garcia, a proud youthful father, Was known on his block as a hard working man With a wife and a family, a job and a future. He'd everything going according to plan. One day Manuel Garcia, complaining of stomach pains, Went to the clinic to find out the cause. His body was found to have cancerous tissue, Ignoring the order of natural laws. So Manuel Garcia of Milwaukee County Checked into the medical complex in town, Suddenly seeing his thirty-nine years Like the sand in an hourglass plummeting down. "What are my choices?" cried Manuel Garcia. "You've basically two," was the doctor's decree. "Your cancer untreated will quickly be fatal, But treatment is painful with no guarantees." And so it began, Manuel's personal odyssey: Long sleepless nights in a chemical daze, With echoes of footsteps down long lonely corridors, Tolling his minutes and hours away. With the knowledge that something inside was consuming him, Manuel Garcia was filled with despair. He'd already lost forty pounds to the cancer, And now to the drugs he was losing his hair. After nine weeks in treatment the doctor came calling, Said: "Manuel, we've done about all we can do. Your cancer could go either way at this juncture. It's out of our hands and it's now up to you." He looked in the mirror, a sad frightened stranger, So pale, so wrinkled, so lonely, so scared, Diseased, isolated, and feeling unlovable, One-hundred-twenty-six pounds and no hair. And he dreamed of his Carmen at sixty without him, His four little children not having their dad, Of Thursday-night card games at Julio's, And everything else he'd not done that he wished that he had. Awakened from sleep on the day of his discharge By shuffling feet going all around his bed, Manuel opened his eyes and thought he was still dreaming-- His wife, and four friends with no hair on their heads! He blinked and he looked again, not quite believing. The four shiny heads all lined up side by side, And still to that point not a word had been spoken, But soon they were laughing so hard that they cried. And the hospital hallways were ringing with voices. "Patron, we did this for you," said his friends, And they wheeled him out to the car they had borrowed. "Amigo, estamos contigo ves." So Manuel Garcia returned to his neighborhood, Dropped off in front of his two-bedroom flat. The block seemed unusually deserted for Sunday. He drew a deep breath and adjusted his hat. But before he could enter the front door flew open. Manuel was surrounded with faces he knew: Fifty-odd loved ones and friends of the family With clean-shaven heads and the words "We love you." And so Manuel Garcia, a person with cancer, A father, a husband, a neighbor, a friend, With a lump in his throat said: "I'm not one for speeches, But here I have something that needs to be said. "I felt so alone with my baldness and cancer. Now you stand beside me; thank heaven above For giving me strength that I need, may God bless you, And long may we live with the meaning of love. "For giving me strength that I need, may God bless you, And long may we live with the meaning of love." |

15 Apr 11 - 01:43 AM (#3135566) Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: catspaw49 Geeziz Man......I am without words for the action of your daughters.............................so I'll give you a different wig story. The Columbus community is extremely active when it comes to breast cancer in thanks to two young women. Stephanie Spielman was the wife of Detroit Lions and Ohio State famed linebacker, Chris Spielman. The other was a popular local news anchor. Heather Pick. Both chose to raise awareness as a part of their lives and they certainly did. Heather Pick was especially cool and when her cancer returned as she knew it would she once again followed her own great advice and refused to let it control her. She advised everyone to: "Search out and get the best treatment available then get on with your life." When chemo started again. she worked right along and wore the beautiful wigs she had. But then one day, on the air, she was reporting a Koman Foundation news story for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and took off her wig with a huge smile. Then she went a step further! She had been off for some additional treatment and on this day back she slapped on a bright pink synthetic wig. That got so many calls and so much support that it became a bit of a trademark for her. Both Heather and Stephanie passed away within just a year of each other and this town was devastated although everyone new theirs was fatal. At the annual "Race for the Cure" channel 10 sponsored "Heather and Stephanie's Team"...........and here was what they looked like: Over 6000 Buckeyes in pink wigs walking for the cure BTW......Bruce's cd will take you right back to the 60's......He's wonderful! 16 Apr 11 - 10:12 PM (#3136670) Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: Stilly River Sage The odd thing about cancer is that this nasty disease brings out so many good things as a response. In 2000 I was barely a year out of a divorce and we were still in the petty back and forth stupid stage you can end up going through. Then in September, 2000, I learned I had endometrial cancer. I dreaded telling the kids, aged 12 and 8, and I dreaded telling my ex. My daughter looked shocked, my son puzzled. I explained quickly that mine was the kind that surgery could cure. My ex was also shocked, and offered to let me stay at his house while I recuperated. So kind! The nonsense was gone - life and death trump silly stuff after a divorce. 22 Apr 11 - 12:23 PM (#3140392) Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: olddude So while I was stuck in the lastest Spring blast for two days in an airport hotel, I watched this show on TV called "I shouldn't be alive". Now it is supposed to be absolutely true and scary show but I couldn't stop laughing. Here is the story. Ok two guys Jimmy and Dave decide to do some high glacial skiing in a place in Alaska called Avalanche Alley. Now right away I figured things were not going to go well for them. Suddenly Jimmy falls off the mountain and bashes his head and breaks his hip. His buddy Dave lowers him down to a "safe spot". Dave then says, I will skii 10 miles and get help. He digs a hole and buries his buddie Jimmy in the snow and skiis ten miles to a small cabin. Two guys were up at the cabin for a secluded weekend getaway when Dave stops by and asks for a radio, Nope -t Dave tells them of his buddie buried in the snow and then has a can of Spagetti-o's and sleeps in a warm bed the night while the two guys go looking for his buried buddie. When they come back without him, Dave then goes back and finds him and digs him out "how are you, how was your night" ... yea as Dave enjoyed his Spagetti-o's and warm blanket. So Dave sets up a tent and drags Jimmy into the tent, a little while later an Avalanche buries both of them. They dig out, Jimmy says, Dave can we get the F outta here now please. No Jimmy I will move the tent to a safer place. In the meantime, a plane flying over with a guy and his 8 month pregnant wife were traveling as the commentator says "to have a romanctic moment on the glacier LOL". They see these two guys in distress and try to land the plane. The plane crashes right next to the brokeback mountain guys with the cabin and the husband drags his now giving birth wife up there and asks the guys if they have a radio. "Nope but you can lay down and have some Spagetti-o's" Meanwhile back at the avalanche Dave moves the tent to a safer spot .. he thinks. Suddenly they hear a familiar sound. Two big avalanches come down sweep them away and drops Jimmy who is already screwed up 70 feet into an ice crevasse". Dave craws down and drags his ass back out of the crevasse. Jimmy says, Dave can we please get the F off this mountain. Dave finally says maybe it is a good idea to get outta here, he stuffs his buddie Jim and himself into a sleeping bag and toboggans down the glacier. Laying on the ice another plane finally lands and saves them ... They gave Dave a hero award, should have been a Darwin award. Meanwhile back at the cabin, they lady has a healthy baby girl .... |

I have a friend who has been through a lot and she uses that line about God not giving us more than we can handle, but it leaves me wondering. "Then why do people have nervous breakdowns?" Anyway, I hope He has not given you more than you can handle, but it sounds to me like He is really testing you. You must be on an emotional roller coaster. When I have felt like I was really being tested, I would look around me and think of people who were in worse situations. You have many reasons to despair, and I'd rather acknowledge that than brush it off. Keep remembering how many of us are pulling for you to stay strong, but I hope you have people around you (not just around you on the 'Net) in addition to your daughters who are supporting you. One way or another, you will get through this and come out the other side. |

I don't get it when it is well known that pain is a hindrance to healing. It isn't like she's 3 months out of all this and still requesting meds. I too know you'd take it for her if you could............Here's an idea......See if she feels well enough to slap the living shit out of you by walking up to her and saying, "No pain...no gain Dear." 27 Apr 11 - 05:04 PM (#3143637) Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: LilyFestre Dan, Get on the horn IMMEDIATELY with her medical team. There is NO excuse for not giving her pain meds. Getting my port was HORRIBLE. It DOES hurt like hell. I had lots of pain in my neck and found that something cold helped a lot. If you don't have a special bag for that kind of thing, put a bag of frozen peas in a ziploc bag and wrap a dish towel around it and tell her to leave it there as long as she can stand it. Loads of Love, Michelle PS. Package goes in the mail tomorrow...tell Linda she's welcome to call anytime. |
27 Apr 11 - 05:20 PM (#3143650) Subject: RE: BS: Oldude wife (prayers and thoughts) From: LilyFestre Also, I don't know what kind of stuff she takes for chronic pain so be careful in sharing your meds with her. I don't mean to be rude but if you have to make some noise to get her some pain meds, DO IT. My oncologist told me there is NO REASON that if I had pain, I had to tell them. Sometimes people think they have to suck it up....now is NOT the time for that!!! They also told me that getting a port was no big deal, no pain involved. BULL PUCKY!!!! Getting that port, especially when they put that 8 inch tube up the vein in my neck HURT even with all the Versa (supposed stupor inducing drug...didn't work for me) they gave me. I am hoping that her doctors knocked her out for this procedure as it's an ugly one. They taped my arms to the table, smushed my breast so hard that I had a black and blue the size of a football for 2 weeks (gotta get the skin TIGHT so they can put the port in) AND they taped my head to one side so I couldn't move....tape across the face SUCKS. I don't know why they don't just knock you out for it..it would be eaier for everyone involved. I'm with Bobert...GRRRRRRRRRRRR. Get on the phone. Get your wife what she needs. There is no excuse for no pain meds and don't let them give you the prescription Tylenol..that stuff is useless. I don't remember what pain med I had but it was one of the following: Percocet, Oxycodine or a oxymorphone (something like that...morphine)...it is painful and she deserves to have some relief. Don't forget the cold pack. I bet her neck is killing her. If you remember the video I sent, you know what they did. :( One positive....it DOES make getting chemo SO MUCH EASIER. Tell her to ask for a Lidacaine cream and patch. Put it on an hour and a half before her lab work and then she will hardly feel when they access her port. They also have a spray she can ask for right before they access her port but I don't think it worked as well, it smells awful and makes your mouth taste like....well..you don't want to know. Tell Linda to call anytime. I will listen or share or whatever she wants. Also, Zofran is a fantastic med for chemo induced nausea. Ask for it!!! Love you guys! Michelle |

It doesn't matter, if the research helps someone in the future it is time well spent. I guess the other treatments will only be 1 hour after treatment. She hasn't gotten sick so that is a good thing. They wack a lot of meds in ya before they hit you with the big stuff so as to prevent vomiting and such. I hope it all works.. so far today, it was ok |

Some days will seem pretty hopeless. But one thing the last five years have taught me. If you just keep getting up, and keep putting one foot in front of the other, you will make it through. You will sing to the sun and moon again. As I have trod this long path, I used the footprints left by friends who had been here before to find my way. We are waiting on you at the other end. And thanks for your kind thoughts during my travails, friend. I echo what someone else said earlier. You are one of the truly good guys here. I am praying for you and your lovely wife. So not to get the misses mad I will refrain but it is unfair I tell ya. She is a machine, nothing stops her. She just left to visit her mom and told me she is bike riding when she gets home. I came home from a business trip and she did the laundry and cleaned the house. I said what are you doing ... she smiles and says ... hey I got bored I am fine ... God it is impossible to get her to say still .. strong as a bull ... total jock ... She is wearing Jacqui's hats and scarfs .. so far hasn't used the wig my girls did for her ... she said only for work ... ok ... well we got six more of these. After the chemo they give her a shot to build up her white cell count. That shot is taken in the stomach .. she told them she can give it to herself so now she doesn't go up for it, they deliver it and she sticks herself in the gut ... won't let me do it .. strong woman ... So far we are doing very well |
