BS: Illegal to fart in public

Illegal to fart in public

I see residents in Malawi's financial capital Blantyre have reacted angrily at government attempts to criminalize farting in public, and rightly so.

The Local Courts Bill, to be introduced next week, reads: "Any person who vitiates the atmosphere in any place so as to make it noxious to the public to the health of persons in general dwelling or carrying on business in the neighbourhood or passing along a public way, shall be guilty of a misdemeanour."

The bill will also deal with citizens who pretend to be fortune tellers.

As one local man said: "We can't allow this bill to go through. We all fart. Where do they think we could go and fart?"

A lady added, "We all fart in public and it will be difficult to tell who has done it. Some do it silently. It some cases it is like teargas which goes like shhhh! Our legislators need to concentrate on discussing development projects. It would make sense if they talked about defecating and urinating anyhow but not farting. This will not work. We will keep on farting." she said.

I do hope Joe doesn't ban "Hot Air" on this site, I would miss Richard Bridge's posts.

Who says the proposed law has anything to do with farting?

The wording refers to something which " vitiates the atmosphere in any place so as to make it noxious to the public to the health [sic] of persons..."

There is no evidence that farting, while embarrassing, was ever bad for anybody's health. But the new law would prohibit harmful things like dumping chemicals, abandoning garbage, burning trash, etc.

It sounds to me like something we 'civilized' people expect without giving it a thought.

Obviously the answer here lies in a compromise, and I would suggest the compulsory ignition of all extraneous bodily gases immediately upon exit in order to mitigate the noxious and/or merely malodorous effects thereof at the earliest opportunity. Failing that, the compulsory insertion of whistles may help to eliminate doubt in cases where the identity of the perpetrator is in dispute.

Very good Smokey, do you recall

"There was a young farter from Sparta,
A really magnificent farter,
On the strength of one bean
He'd fart "God Save the Queen",
And Beethovens Seventh Sonata.

He could whistle, could warble and hum,
By constricting the hole in his bum,
And make animal sounds,
Or fire artillery rounds,
With the force of a field cannon gun."

From Wikipedia

Farting at will

Main article: Flatulist

Historical comment on the ability to fart at will is observed as early as St. Augustine's The City of God (5th century AD). Augustine mentions men who "have such command of their bowels, that they can break wind continuously at will, so as to produce the effect of singing." The fact that mankind in general has lost this ability he attributes to the first sin of Adam and Eve and its consequences with respect to body control.[27] Intentional passing of gas and its use as entertainment for others appears to have been somewhat well-known in pre-modern Europe, according to mentions of it in medieval and later literature, including Rabelais.

Le Pétomane ("The Fartiste") was a famous French performer in the 19th century who, as well as many professional farters before him, did flatulence impressions and held shows. The performer Mr. Methane carries on Le Pétomane's tradition today. Also, a 2002 film Thunderpants revolves around a boy named Patrick Smash who has an ongoing flatulence problem since he was a newborn baby. He eventually overcame his problems and fulfilled his dreams including being an astronaut.

Don't think so. There was this guy at at college called Pete, and Pete used to light his farts - usually with great success and to wild applause. However, on this one occasion, he did it full on - no underpants!

Well you can guess the rest. The inevitable ensued - Pete got blowback. All the hair on his bollocks was badly singed and we had to take him to hospital with internal burning. Pete said he could feel it in there, but the hospital was unsympathetic - it was late at night, you see, and to be honest - we all thought it was funny and were laughing like trains.

So go careful out there - as cat Stevens says, its a wild world.

Joni Mitchell

BOTH SIDES NOW

Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way.
But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone.
So many things I would have done but clouds got in my way.

I've looked at clouds from both sides now,
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall.
I really don't know clouds at all.

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real; I've looked at love that way.
But now it's just another show. you leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know, don't give yourself away.

I've looked at love from both sides now,
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall.
I really don't know love at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud to say "I love you" right out loud,
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say
I've changed.
Something's lost but something's gained in living every day.

I've looked at life from both sides now,
From win and lose, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall.
I really don't know life at all.

Are these mouse farts or human? I'm troubled by a vision of scientists solomnly lifting their white coats and trying to fart in a constant and predictable manner into rows of mouse cages. I suppose it would be something for them to talk about at parties.

I just wanna know how they measure and identify mouse farts. I'm guessing that the scientist aren't emanating at the mice, but you never know. It's easier to smell human farts than mouse farts. I used to have mice, and I don't remember them farting that much.

"I used to have mice, and I don't remember them farting that much."

Well, la-di-da. I used to have crabs and I don't remember them farting at all.

"La-di-da

Meaning

Used to highlight and ridicule snobbish forms of behaviour or speech.

Origin

'La-di-da' was fading out of use in the language until it staged something of a comeback following its use by the eponymous heroine of the 1977 film Annie Hall. Diane Keaton's character actually said 'La-di-da, la-di-da, la la'. This wasn't a reference to swanky or snobbish behaviour - it was used as a meaningless phrase, spoken out of context when nervous, to emphasize Hall's ditzy personality.

The expression was in general use by the 1880s. This usage was probably advanced by the inclusion of 'la-di-da' in some songs of the day. George Duckworth Atkin and others collected many of these in the journal House Scraps, which was published around 1883, and included these two songs:

We are a Merry Family, We are! we are! we are!

Jack, he deals in Canadas,
In Trunks, one, two, or three;
Willie, he gives turns away,
But not to you or me.
The young 'un goes to music-halls,
And does the la-di-da;
We are a shiney family,
We are! we are! we are!

Untitled:

La-di-da, La-di-do,
He's a well-known old Adonis,
La-di-da, La-di-do,
You may tell it by his nose,
La-di-da, La-di-do,
For the colour all his own is,
It's a pleasing combination
Of the beetroot and the rose.

'La-di-da' sounds as though it may be of French origin. It has been taken up as Cockney Rhyming Slang for 'cigar' but that, of course, wasn't the origin of the term, merely a usage of it. In fact, 'la-di-da' derives from the earlier reduplicated phrase 'lardy-dardy'. That phrase was cited in Lacy's Acting Edition of Plays, Dramas, Farces and Extravagances, 1849:

One of those haw-haw fellows, who used to hang around you - lardy dardy, pois'ning the atmosphere with their pomadey. [Note: pomade has two meanings - either a type of cider or a sticky, scented gel used to dress hair. We can safely assume the above citation refers to the latter.]

That example shows 'lardy dardy' used as an exclamation. Other contemporary sources used it in the current descriptive manner, for example, this piece from Mary Elizabeth Braddon's novel Three times dead; or, The secret of the heath, 1859:

You're not much good, my friend, says I, with your lardy dardy ways, and your cold blooded words.

Reduplicated expressions like lardy-dardy usually have one word that supplies the meaning and a secondary rhyming word, which is added for emphasis. In this case the significant word is 'lardy'. These days, 'lardy' just means 'full of lard', like lardy cakes, the sweet, fatty 'heart attack on a plate' buns that are still sold in the UK without any form of health warning. 'Lardy-dardy and 'la-di-da' have nothing to do with lard. It is more likely that 'lardy' was a corruption of 'lady' or 'lordy', which match the meaning of the phrases."

A couple of years ago we had the pleasure of hearing Peggy Seeger live with the definitive statement on this. It's on Youtube: Peggy Seeger. It's a Free World. I tried to make a link, but got a weird thing with the search including mudcat stuff in the addy.

Peggy Seeger sang a song about crab farts?

I think if a crab farted, it would smell like what they'd been eating: you. So you wouldn't notice you-farts.

OK. I have a serious question, and frankly I don't expect to get a serious answer from THIS crowd.

If farts ARE outlawed, will we have difficulty getting them through security at airports?

I think I've just realised how bees manage to fly..

But anyway.. fart smuggling, yes, tricky one. In the sealed frame of a bicycle or wheelbarrow, perhaps?

And anyway, you can tell when a mouse farts because all the other mice move to the other end of the cage and the one left is whistling and looking around like (s)he doesn't know what just happened...

It's actually been proved that between 68.3% and 81.7% of mousely squeaks are really caused by flatulence.

You think crabs think mouse farts are deafening?

And as so far as airport security, wolf down some beans, and when your warmed up, spread your arms and prepare for take off...then let 'em rip.

Viva refritos!!!!..and awa-a-a-a-y!

You think crabs think mouse farts are deafening?

If you want a sensible opinion on that, and not just more of this puerile silliness to which we have been thus so far treated, you'll have to specify whether you mean mouse crabs or human crabs.

""This guy deserves his own comedy series on TV.""

Coals to Newcastle! We've already got a series about him, starring Robet Lindsay. It's called "My Family", and he is a dead ringer for the rude dentist. Of course they won't let him fart on air.
