Rosalie

As requested, the lyrics. I also posted them on the video comments, but I think it takes hours for any changes to register, so here y'are.

Rosalie

Sweet Rosalie of mine
See how the love within her shines
through the miles between us, dark and deep
like the stars I see her as she sleeps

The watchfires dwindling in the camp
The Captain writing by his lamp
The sentry listens for any sound
across a darkened battleground

Back there the whitetails roam the pines
The hillside is blue with columbines
The river tumbles cold and free
Those mountain summers hold me

The bugle calls us as we lay
We'll cross that field at break of day
and dying holds no fear for me
except to lose you, Rosalie

Almost 10 years ago now, I had a very odd dream. In this dream, John Lennon sang a song to me about a rainbow. There was nothing strange or saint-like or anything about John in this dream. It was as though a friend of mine were sharing a song with me. I remembered the melody and the first verse after I woke up, and I sat down with a pen and paper and wrote the rest of the song.
And so, with a dedication to John, and to all of you flower children, here's The Rainbow. Peace.

Oh, and Ken Burns would have done well to have included your Rosalie in his Civil War series. It exceeds most of what he included and definitely would have relieved the tedium of repetition! Beautiful song.

A couple of years ago, I was riding my bicycle along the Platte River and thinking about the many friends and good times at the FSGW Getaway. Along with these thoughts, a tune came into my mind that kept revolving until it eventually spun out the chorus of this song, and by the time the ride was over, most of the rest of it was complete as well. Did a little research to give a bit of historical depth, and here it is and hope y'all enjoy it...

Well, that was a hard song to do, but it had to come out. My significant other says she thinks I get hung up on sad songs, and I guess Justin, and A Song for You, and Rosalie kind of bear that out. What can I say? This world is downright tragic sometimes, which I suppose makes the bright side brighter. It doesn't change the fact of what is happening in places like Afghanistan though.

I thought of a mother who was interviewed on NPR about her young son that was killed there. She said she was told he was a hero, and that he had lived a good life, by the Army spokesman. She said he was only a boy, and never had a chance to really live any kind of life at all, much less a "good one". We get used to seeing the names and closing our eyes to the truth of it. I watched it happen yesterday, like I watched it happen 40 years ago, like it has happened since we began fighting each other. I know there are reasons for fighting, and I know these soldiers died for those reasons. But I see these kids at the airports looking like pink-cheeked children in fatigues and I can't help but think ...what a waste.

It really struck a true note, Ernie.

"A soldier based at Ft. Bragg..." or "A Marine based at Camp Lejeune... died yesterday in Afghanistan...." comes over my radio several times a month, and sometimes several times a week, during the local news portion of NPR. Some of them homegrown North Carolina boys, many more from places all across these United States. I listen to the sparse details, which always includes the age of the soldier. Corporal__________, age 21. Private ___________, age 19. Sargeant __________age 23.

It stops the heart to think about.

I sat in on a jam at the Colorado Midwinter Bluegrass Festival last February, and there was a grizzled, skinny elderly gentleman in a Wyoming Cowboys baseball cap playing a pretty hot fiddle. Someone asked him if he knew a certain song, and he replied "I'm not sure how it goes, but I know how it went." That cracked everybody up, and the phrase stuck with me. Anyhow, I turned it into a song dedicated to all the old timers who blazed the old bluegrass trail, and I hope y'all like it.

From the Preston Drive-in south of Louisville Kentucky, you could see a big rock outcropping on a ridge nearby. This was called Devil's Backbone, and it would catch the last rays of sun going down before the movie started. The name caught my interest at the age of 12, a connotation that bad things might happen up there, or had happened.
Anyway, this song is about a love affair gone wrong.

It has to be turned up fairly loud on mine, but sounds pretty good through my speakers, Janie. I know the file plays well through my car stereo and home stereo. Let me know and I can send the file and you can knock it off to CD, or I could just send a CD.

I really like the electric guitar on Long Time. With all of the acoustic instruments, I wasn't sure how a Fender Strat would sound but it blends well into the mix, and Jack Unruh, who also plays in my rock/blues band Terraplane, manages to get a very Danny Kirwan era Fleetwood Mac-ish tone on it, to my ear.

Not because it is a "bad" song in ANY way but because the recording quality left me trying to figure out the lyrics and thereby left me without the ability to enjoy it or even "care for it". I guess, overall, I just didn't "hear" the song so I COULDN'T really care for it. I hope you sort that out on accounta I would really like to "hear" it.

Hope that doesn't sound to... whatever. Just my opinion. You know I LOVE yer stuff. But, that one got 45 seconds, tops. If I can't make out the lyrics, I am gone. I really hope you give it another go.

Well, dealing with amplified instruments is a new thing with me, and especially getting the vocal balanced so it doesn't dominate or get lost in the mix, gnu. I appreciate the feedback and will give it a fresh listen, and possibly remix it.

I first saw Brendan Devereaux' tribute to his Grandparents, Liberty Hall, because of a link he posted here on Mudcat. His own version is really powerful, but I pictured a version with photos of the Easter Rebellion and Brendan was gracious enough to grant his permission.

Here's my version of Liberty Hall.

I started doing these videos back in March of 2011 and it's been a lot of fun. I certainly appreciate all of the support and kind comments from the Mudcat family on these efforts. One of the side benefits is the number of musician friends I have been able to coerce into participating, and have become friends with as a result.

The views of the 29 videos on my channel are now approaching 12,000 according to the Youtube stats. About 70 percent of the views are from people 55-63 years old, and 90 percent from men. So come on ladies! :>)

The most interesting phenomena is the way this video has taken off. Since I uploaded it on Nov 26, it has generated over 1,000 views. 96 percent are in the US. Over 50 percent of the views are coming from "mobile devices". I am puzzled by the popularity of this video. The harp work is pretty good I think, the guitar is ok, and the vocal was maybe my 5th or 6th attempt and I'm still not liking it. Maybe the fact that there is a reality show on tv in the US with a similar name accounts for it? Maybe there's something about illegal activity in general that has spurred it. Whatever the reason, its currently getting over 100 views a day, which is more than all of the others by a good margin. And 11 percent of those are women, which also beats my average :>)

This song had its beginnings here on Mudcat, on the Poetry corner thread actually.

As a kid I loved Halloween, as most kids do, I think. As I grew older, I began to see the very elemental nature of this holiday, its strange appeal that transcends the notions of costume-wearing and trick-or-treating. The Celts knew it as Beltane, one of the four corners of the turning year. They believed that the life we know exists in parallel to other worlds, that there were doors between this world and others, the living and dead, the ordinary and the magical, that opened at these times of year. This song is about the Beltane Time, about Halloween, and the strange excited intuition that all of us have about that time of year.

This song was originally written for the Mudcat Peace in Ireland Song challenge, and I finally put a tune to it, and just in time for St Patrick's! Between the time this was written and now, Northern Ireland has done the unbelieveable and made peace between its divided people, so this song that was written in hope, has become one of celebration. I hope the people of Ireland continue to show the World that Peace is possible.

I often re-mix a song with added or changed audio track. when I do, I don't delete the old track, I convert it to Private access. This is probably what you are seeing. In the description, I will usually note "see the newly remixed version at youtube/address.com," or whatever the address of the remixed video is. Clicking on that address, or copying and pasting it, will get you to the new public access version. Or visit my channel at Macfeeley where all of the viewable videos are displayed.
Sorry for the confusion. I may be confusing others as well, and may consider deleting the older versions. Thanks.

I traveled to Greece in the Spring of 2011, and saw Delphi, the most sacred of spots in ancient times. Here lies the sacred spring of Castalia, and the Temples of Apollo and Athena. It was customary for those seeking fame, fortune, or any knowledge of what the future held, to call upon the Oracle, a priestess who sat within the temple above a chasm in the rocks, inhaling the vapors that came from within the Earth which induced the gift of prophecy.
The prophecies were rarely straight forward. An ancient king was told that if he were to invade an adjoining country he would witness the fall of a great kingdom, which turned out to be his own.
The Greeks were believers in predestination, and felt that each man's life was a tapestry being woven by the three spirits they called The Fates. At any time, they might cut the strands of thread from which this life was woven.
These legends and the eerie beauty of Delphi gave inspiration for this admittedly strange song...

Yes, a sad day when she went down, and tragic for the crew and loved ones of those lost at sea. The question of why she was there, and who was at fault for putting her in harm's way, is under investigation. Whatever the results, the Bounty should be remembered. She was a glorious sight in full sail. I chose not to include the last pictures of her as she sank.

In October, I took a trip with my daughter down to New Orleans, and then up through the Mississippi Delta. I used some photos that she took, among others, for the slide show that accompanies this song. The numbers refer to the two highways that meet at the famous crossroads near Clarksdale Mississippi

Another good one!

You should do another Bounty and include the sinking... ya might have ta tweak the song a touch to match but I think, "What the hey? Why not?"

Well, the song has a kind of optimistic tone, despite the ship's fate, and the words "Bouty Sail away" seem to jar with the image of the ship capsizing. But that IS what happened, so let me give it some thought.

I have been very lucky in being able to work with two Mudcatters on song ideas, and bring them to some sort of fruition.

Gary Owens works actively with a group in Canada seeking to prevent the widespread deforestation that is devastating the northern woods of his country. He asked if I would help with a song he was working on, and this is the result...

Is Our Forest Really Ours

Janie Endres is also a Mudcatter who has been a friend of mine for a long time, and we have sung away many a night at the Getaway. She wrote a song based on a traditional character, placing her in New Orleans at the time of Hurricane Katrina.

Little Sally Walker Down in New Orleans

I want to thank both Gary and Janie for letting me help with these projects. Great songs, the both of you!

I saw the Canuck dollar heading further into the toilet with the price of oil dropping so I bit the bullet and bought USD$15 today. $4.03! You would think that our PM's reckless (illegal?) policy of bombs and bullets in Iraq and soon in Syria would prop up the CDN$ a bit for sucking up to the Brits but noooo. Apparently, killing people costs a lot of money.

One of these days I want to do an album of co-written songs, including Is Our Forest Really Ours written with you, Song of the Saxons written with Amos, Little Sally Walker with Janie Endres, and Fools and Horses with David Carter, all friends from Mudcat. A great variety there, which I think only really happens when working with other writers. I have a lot of songs, especially the newer ones, on Soundcloud now. and my Youtube Channel has in excess of 100,000 views. About 12 years ago, we had these things called Song Challenges, many of them posed by Aine down in Texas. Well, one day she was digging in her garden and found the broken pieces from a blue china jug in the ground. Of course, she wondered who it had belonged to, and who put it there, and so she issued a song challenge. I wrote these lyrics as my entry. I even remember Bert singing the words to the tune of Sweet Betsy from Pike on Mudcat Radio one night. So, quite appropriately, it took a while to unearth these lyrics and write a melody for them, but here, newly unearthed and assembled, is the Blue China Jug. Hope you enjoy the story...

I can't see the first two videos you posted. Also, the first "Hatfield Story" link is still watch-able.

Otherwise, it's good stuff

The warring factions battle it out in ancient towns like Baghdad, Damascus, Palmyra and Aleppo. These are cities that are among the oldest inhabited sites on earth, and they are being reduced to rubble in our time. What must life be like for people in these places who have families and dreams? Who are they, and why do they want to leave? These were some questions on my mind. The incidents of terrorism in Europe and the US are horrific, but in comparison we live in a paradise interrupted by the rare nightmare. What is it like to live in a nightmare from which you can't wake up?

Thanks Gnu and David.
The new one, Wyoming Wind, got posted on Soundcloud, which is where I usually post new material so I can listen and make any changes I feel the song needs. Then I will often create a photo slide show and put it on Youtube when I feel that the song is finished. Sometimes the photos are a challenge to put together, and the songs can be limited in their meaning by them, if you follow me.
Some, like Ghost Town, are quite easy when you find the right batch of pictures.

I found the lyric for this very strange song while going through a notebook of papers from the early 70s. I was in a rock band at the time, and must have written this song with that in mind. Anyway, it slumbered in the dark for 40 years, like the Undead, until a few days ago when I decided to get it recorded. So, turn out the lights, make sure the windows are closed, and listen to
