Mystic Sea Music Festival 2011 line-up

27 Mar 11 - 04:28 PM (#3122886)
Subject: Mystic Sea Music Festival 2011 line-up
From: ChanteyLass

The line-up is not on the seaport's website http://www.mysticseaport.org/ yet (still some posts from 2010), but Geoff Kaufman, Jon Campbell, and Everett Brown shared the stage at the Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland, RI, last night, and Geoff brought flyers.

The 2011 festival is June 9-12.

Thursday-Saturday evening concerts start at 7.
Daytime events and concerts on Saturday and Sunday are from noon-5
The symposium sessions are Friday 10-3 at the Coast Guard Academy in New London and Saturday 9-noon at Mystic Seaport.

This year's scheduled performers are:
ARRR
Celeste Bernardo
The Chanteens
Judy Cook
Jack Dalton
Jeff Davis
Martin and Shan Graebe (from England)
Richard Grainger (from England)
Kapriol'! (from the Netherlands)
Tom Kastle
Margaret McCandless
Dan Milner & Robbie O'Connell
The Northern Neck Chantey Singers
Brian Peters (from England)
Raizes
John Roberts
Roll & Go
Rick Spencer
Danny Spooner (from Australia)
David Stone (from Canada)
Ken Sweeney
Bob Webb
Caryl Weiss
Bob Walser

Unless already noted, the performers reside in the US, though some have origins elsewhere.

ARRR, I believe is the pirate gang from in and around Brown University. Nice to see them featured.

Charley, they are listed as being from Providence, and I'm pretty sure that you are right about them being Brown U's pirate gang. They were a lot of fun last year and I agree that it is nice to see them on the bill.

Chantey Lass-

We're certainly looking forward to being there again. The last time we were featured as a group was back in 2006. We're hoping that our new CD Look Out! will merit some attention: Click here for website!

It's a combination of traditional shanties, poems by C. Fox Smith and old sailor poets adapted for singing, and some contemporary nautical songwriters.

I'll also bring my two songbooks for sale: Sea Songs of Cicely Fox Smith and Uncommon Sailor Songs.

And we do have a pirate song or two!

Charley Noble

I keep checking the seaport's website to see if there is any news. So far, nothing. There may be a change in my schedule, though. Today I got a notice to report for possible jury duty on May 31! Sure hope they won't need me on June 10, but if they do I hope I'll know far enough in advance to change my reservation without being charged for May 9. I would still attend that evening's concert, but a very tired ChanteyLass would arrive at the courthouse on June 10!

Ah, but will there be food and drinks available for purchase by spectators at ALL the evening concerts? This was a problem last year. On Thursday evening I had not eaten anything expecting to buy something on the grounds. I figured that was one way to support the seaport and the festival. Instead, I went hungry. Grrr.

Chantey Lass...Ask for a postponement for jury duty. I do it all the time. In CT we can postpone for up to six months. I have always gotten my suggested alternate date. Good luck

Hardly anything I can think of, Charley!

I spent Saturday at the seaport. Usually when I'm there on my own I go to all the demos that include music. In between I go to exhibits. I want to see Skin & Bones, which is about sailors' tattoos. However, today I was with my son and three grandchildren (7, 4, turning 2 today) while my daughter-in-law worked on a project. We had a great time and they were well-behaved (not perfect), but I did a lot more walking than I've done since my surgery. David I. was the official chantey singer, but Denise was also on the demo squad and lending her lovely voice to the songs. They were talking about reviewing songs to get ready to perform at the festival. Did you know David L. has resigned? I understand he still subs and is helping Geoff with the festival.

I spent Memorial Day (also a Lobster Day) at Mystic Seaport and bought my festival tickets there. However, the person I bought them from couldn't find an all-festival tag for me. He said he'd have one ready for me when I show up for Thursday night's concert. Since I'm a seaport member, I'll have admission for the daytime concerts, anyway, so I'll be okay without it, but I still want it! I also renewed my membership at the Individual Plus level that day. That means I get to bring a guest, admitted free, with me each time, and it can be a different guest each time. The first time I brought a guest was to the festival! People in line behind me at admissions were discussing the best discount to use to get in. The married couple could get in with a price for couples. The other man with them could get an AARP or AAA discount or something. I turned around, asked them to step aside with me, explained my membership, and invited him to make use of it, telling him he would be free to go his own way within the grounds and not feel he had to stick with me. It turned out he was the father of one of the performers. Last year I brought a married couple with me one festival day, so the wife got in free.

Looking forward to my second sea music festival. :) This year I have a few friends coming who have never been before; when they asked which day to come, I told them they're better off starting Friday night and just staying for the duration! We'll see when they show up... They were here for the chanty blast, and loved it, so I'm hoping that'll be impetus for them to stay as long as possible. :)

Slight dilemma though.... Go to the Thursday night concert, possibly pull an all-nighter, and then drive back to work for the morning (only working a half day), or call in sick? :P

I don't think anyone in this year's Mystic line-up is a fisher-poet, but there are usually some at the New Bedford (Massachusetts) Working Waterfront Festival in September. The line-up for that is not complete. Jon Campbell will perform there, but in addition to being a fisher-poet he is a singer-songwriter, so I don't know how he'll divide his time. At some point he may see this thread and fill us in, but I don't think he checks Mudcat frequently. Here's a link for the Working Waterfront Festival. http://www.workingwaterfrontfestival.org/

Usually about a third of the Festival audience is in residence by Thursday evening. There's always room for more but I understand that working people are more constrained than some of us underemployed shantymen. The late evening session at the German dancehall, however, is one of the best for new participants. Fewer people makes it more intimate and less intense. Of course "intense" is also great unless you choose the wrong key for what you want to lead and crash and burn...

We'll be there for sure Thursday evening; we better be there since we're scheduled on the evening stage as Roll & Go.

Starting to get excited. Anyone heard anything re: what the daily sessions are gonna be about? Considering that there are a lot of Civil War history buffs in the line-up, I'm wondering if they're doing anything to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. Then again, this is pure conjecture on my part.

ChanteyLass--

Last year I did all the demos (purposefully), and I think I ended up doing all but one in the previous year. It's one of the only places in the world you can do that, and for me, that's where it's at.

I'd love to see more enthusiasm for (attendance at) the demos, and in turn to see them developed more. Longer heave/hauls, more realistic work. A bit more "training" for some of the performers beforehand. There shouldn't be any more of a burden on the crew, but participants' enthusiasm might carry it.

***
I was planning on attending as of a few weeks ago, but sad to say time and finances have made me unable. I was in my native Connecticut the last two years, but now "trapped" in California. I hope someone is there carrying the flag for chanties as a current and relevant art! :) Sing what you want! Sing what you feel! Chanties are not folklore, they are US!

On a side note, if anyone knows of any chanty-related events in California (e.g. in Frisco) this summer, please let me know.

I'm not sure when sound check will be for this evening's concert but 6pm might be a useful time to stop by. Tech sheets should have been e-mailed to Dennis Cook a week or so ago.

It was a fine opening night of music though severe thunderstorms may have kept some people away. Those who attended had a great time, and this is the first Thursday night concert that I've been to when the police didn't come to tell us it was too late to use mics.

I can't go to the Griswald until my son's family no longer needs me to babysit on Mondays. I hope someone else requests that song. I assume you mean Bonnie Milner because I've heard The Johnson Girls sing it.

John, I told Bonnie about your request. She said to thank you. She didn't say whether or not she plans to go to The Griswald Inn.

That last post was from me. I have had so little sleep I forgot to identify myself on my cell phone. I've stayed until at least 1 AM at the pub sings and waking up to get to the first festival program each morning. Saturday night's sing was packed with wonderful participants and songs. I left at 1:35 AM and went to the church sing this morning at 10 AM. I could never do this if I hadn't stayed in Mystic. In addition to the wonderful songs last night, there was a performance by Morris dancers and a wonderful bones performance by Tim Reilly and Kenny Wolin as each tried to outdo the other. I think Kathy W. videotaped that.

Judging by the sparsity of posts here, I should venture to believe that a grand time is being had by all. However, if any of you still need more maritime music after the weekend consider a run up to New Hampshire next Saturday.

I'm home but my computer seems unable to get onto the Internet!

Curmudgeon, that session sounds wonderful. I hope it is well attended and wish I could go. I'd love to go to one of the sessions, but it is unlikely given the distance. Instead I'll be at the Blackstone River Theatre's Summer Solstice Festival in Cumberland, RI. I enjoy reading the threads about your sessions even though I can't go. It seems like a lot of wonderful people share terrific songs.

Gibb, the Northern Neck Chantey singers were scheduled to do net-hauling songs at Australia Beach on Sunday at 11. I don't know if they did it because rain had just stopped. I was leaving the church sing at the other side of the seaport and decided to go to another concert nearby. I also don't know if the NNCS were supposed to do this presentation in boats or onshore. The seaport demo squad does a demo of this in boats with songs on a regular schedule now.

When I wrote about Saturday's pub sing, I forgot to
Mention that during one of the songs a young couple got up and did some swing dancing. They were good.

I will post more when I'm rested. In the meantime I hope everyone made it home safely or soon will. Please let us know your own experiences at the festival.

Got back from Mystic late last night (must work today). I'll try to post more comments later, but I had a great time. Gibb, in response to your question, the Northern Neck Chantey Singers did the net hauling demo on Sunday morning, which included a demo of splicing and net repair. It was on shore.

Also of interest to you if you remember Bob Walser's presentation on oyster dredging songs last year, he's figured out more! Using a rowboat in the Mystic River, he conducted an experiment of actually using one of the songs while dredging. Totally cool.
This year I was able to participate in more of the demos-- pulling on a halyard to a chantey was incredibly informative. I'd tried it before in Chicago on the tall ship Windy, but it isn't the right sort of rig for that to work right. Trying the capstan again was also good, and I do wish I could have done more of that sort of thing. Some year I'm going to get there a day early and have time to really do them all.

The concerts were great; the pub sings were great-- though Thursday night, perhaps due to all the rain, was comparatively low key (at least based on my limited experience).

I believe the female half of the swing-dancing couple ChantyLass mentions was Nicole Singer.

I did get some video of a number of things, but haven't had the chance yet to see how well any of it came out. Fingers crossed!

I couldn't make it--busy all weekend on the other side of Connecticut, but I did discover that the evening concerts on Friday and Saturday were broadcast on radio, and will be available archivally for a couple of weeks only. Go to http://archives.wpkn.org/ and scroll to either Friday, June 10 or Saturday, June 11. Listen to the shows scheduled for 7:00 p.m. to 10 or 11:00 p.m.--ignore the names of the shows, which just indicate the DJs who were pre-empted by the special broadcast. It's not the whole festival, but at least it's a taste for those of us who couldn't make it.

This is being written on coming down day as we always refer to it. the festival was such a delight. We made some new friends and identified others as sometimes we know people but not their names. The music was excellent with the saturday night pub one of our favorites ever. The music, the dancing, the hugs and kisses were top notch We especially enjoyed the Souzas, Peters Juliana and JoAnns Keep on Fishing were great. The North Neck Chanteymen were a joy to behold but the real dark horse was Jack Dalton. He brought fun and energy in a new form.Ill never forget the Yupik pick up line "We are not related" Laughed until we cried. One more great festival in the books. Looking forward to the next which will be our twenty fifth. Enjoy the year ahead may it be kind to you all and we hope to see yo in January. The Twins

Mel, no, that wasn't me. I ate lunch alone in the Galley and dinner close to home in RI. However, next time I see you I will introduce myself now that I know your name or even if I forget it. (I'm pretty shy and a lot older.) Do you plan to go to Chantey Blast? I do but almost didn't last year because of bad weather. And I'll be back at Mystic before then. I don't know how often you go there, but maybe we will cross paths. I was pretty sure your partner was named Nicole but didn't know her last name.

KathyW and Charley Noble, I look forward to seeing anything you put online.

Pam and Sue, how about Geoff Kauffman singing about the last Great Whale at the Whales and Whaling workshop? I saw you there. That and people putting arms around each other and swaying to Geoff Kauffman leading the closing song Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her brought tears to my eyes. During that last song I was standing next to one of Mystic's craft demonstrators. Coincidentally, he had sat next to me at January's Chantey Blast. His voice is almost as deep as Don Sineti's, and since some vocal cord damage I often sing in a deep voice, too. I can't carry a tune, but standing next to him probably helped! Also, you might want to check out Chris and Meredith Thompson, singer/songwriter identical twins who grew up in Providence and started performing as teenagers at open mics at Stone Soup, so I've watched them grow up and have always been able to tell the apart by their facial bone structure. In fact, I did not think they were identical until they said so! They also said that their parents would never tell them who was born first, but eventually they got their birth certificates. On that, my guess was wrong. Most of their songs are not about the sea, but I think they are wonderful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qPkvoY7MJA Both are parents of young children, making performance dates hard, but here's their website. http://www.cmthompson.com/There are more videos of them on YouTube as well as videos of them with Pete and Maura Kennedy in a quartet called The Strangelings.

Thanks to Geoff Kaufman and all the other staff and volunteers who produced this magnificent sea music festival, and to the folks who attended.

Special thanks to the kitchen crew at the YTB who prepared our breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

This year Julie and her sales staff at the Boathouse did an outstanding job with the CDs. Everything was well displayed, inventoried, and ready for check-out when performers were leaving the Festival on Sunday.

Some of my favorite memories was just wandering around with Roll & Go on Friday when we had nothing official to do. First we serenaded the old Maine steamboat Sabino and then took a short harbor cruise aboard her. Then we crawled all over the Charles W. Morgan (which is being completely rebuilt) and led a few shanties on her deck. We also did an impromptu set at the performance stage by the Spouter Inn, and then scoped out the Greenmanville Church to see how best to deal with its very live acoustics when we were doing the C. Fox Smith workshop.

I have to say that the Dutch group Kapriol was one of my favorites, among performers who I am less familiar with. They have energy and talent on all levels, and one is irresistibly drawn in to sing with them with hardly a clue what one is singing! Tom Kastle obviously had great fun leading one of their traditional songs with them, "Hand Over Hand."

The Northern Neck Chantey Singers also did a great job of demonstrating how their traditional net-hauling songs were really done.

There's a whole lot more I could say but maybe some other survivors should post their remarks. I have a whole lot of photo editing to do, thanks to JudyB who only managed to come down Saturday and Sunday but still shot 700 photos; I only managed to shoot about a dozen photos, mostly while we were cruising aboard the steamboat Sabino.

Charley Noble

It was lovely to meet you so we are now festival family members. To all our other festival family members, farewell and safe voyage until next time.

I agree that Kapriol'! was wonderful. A friend met me on Saturday and I told her to make sure to hear them, which she did. Another friend who is a deejay on WRIU (same station Laura Travis, closing concert host, is on) was supposed to meet me on Sunday, but she brings her dog and if the rain continued she would have been limited to the Boat Shed, so she backed out. She asked me to buy a Kapriol'! CD for her, but they had already sold out.

I thought the song Ken Sweeney sang about Guzzling Gus and his brothers was wonderful. I liked the way he performed it at the pub blast even better than the way he did it at the closing concert.

Sciencegeek, I was glad I could supply the batteries you needed. I'd appreciate it if you'd replace them for me next year!

Great photos, Charley! I don't know how you got them up so fast! I'm still catching up on sleep! This year I didn't take any photos except two with my phone at the closing concert.

In spite of my having posted a message from Mystic saying there would be no food vendors at the evening concerts, they were there on Friday but not Thursday or Saturday because of rain. They were also there during the Sunday closing concert. Because their presence was inconsistent, it was a good thing I had made other arrangements. I did buy some beverages to supplement the water I'd brought. Charley, I'm glad the performers had a reliable source for meals.

Please tell your bandmates that I was glad they sang How Can I Keep from Singing at the church sing. I was hoping someone would do it, and they did it well.

I saw Jon Campbell at the closing concert on Sunday. That was the only time I saw him there.

I hope to get back to the seaport for their Independence Day celebration. It is the day after New Bedford's Summerfest. I plan to go to both days of that but will commute from home and won't make it to Mystic if I am too tired.

Thanks for posting the rest of the story of The Wreck of the Glenneslin. It's a sad story for a splendid looking ship but at least the crew survived and the officers were reprimanded.

That was Nor and Eli Dale who led "How Can I Keep from Singing" at the Greenmanville Church at the Sunday morning hymn sing.

Indeed, Marc. There have been times in the past when it felt like the food service folks were almost hostile to the crew, performers and volunteers. The return to a more relaxed, family like setting - even with the pressure of running around from site to site- promoted a good sense of positive morale.
Folks knew that their well being was an important concern and the kitchen crew did their best to ensure everyone was taken care of. Though it seems that a number of performers had no idea what the $10 food voucher was for. sigh... :)

Weather permitting, it would be nice to set up a picnic blanket on the village green and have a Mudcat Box Lunch for a meet & greet. I know there are still plenty of catters out there I have yet to put a face to.

Sciencegeek, a good time for a Saturday Mudcat picnic might be after the end of the afternoon concert but before the start of the evening concert. I think we are allowed to stay on the grounds although I usually leave to grab something to eat. There isn't enough time between the Saturday symposium and the start of the afternoon concerts. However, performers for the next concert might have to do sound checks. As you said, we have a lot of time to think about this.

Oh! Wish I could. I guess many others wish they could, too. Robbie O'Connell was at Saturday's Blackstone River Theatre Summer Solstice Festival in Cumberland, RI, on Saturday with his cousin Aoife Clancy. Also, Laura Travis, host of Mystic's closing concert, hosted the Traditions stage. Nice to see them again so soon.

I'm doing my final edits of the closing concert and I'm blanking on the name of the woman MC who is also a local radio announcer.

Thank you, Kathy, for posting the videos you did of Tim and Kenny. Although I raced from the Cape Cod Maritime Festival, where I played a Barnacle performance, I saw Deidre, and vaulted the gate at the Seaport at 6 p.m., raced to the shed hoping to catch Marc, Tim, and Kenny, I missed them and only caught the final Leave Her Johnny.

Thanks to you, Kathy, I did get to see two performances by the boyz. Thanks.
